This is a chapter in a volume whose aim is to study the fantastic in literature from different parts of the French speaking world. My contribution deals with the case of Patrick Chamoiseau as an example of the modern use of the fantastic in Carribean literature.

Deletion of a lectin gene does not affect the phenotype of the nematode-trapping fungus Arthrobotrys oligospora

A number of filamentous fungi are known to produce high levels of saline-soluble and low-molecular-mass lectins. The function of these proteins are not clear but it has been proposed that they are involved in storage of nutrients, development, recognition of other organisms, and defense reactions. A gene encoding such a lectin (AOL) was deleted in the nematode-trapping fungus Arthrobotrys oligospo

Roles of hematopoietin and cytokine tyrosine kinase receptors in early lymphopoiesis

Cytokines have been shown to have important roles in lymphopoiesis. However, many questions remain unresolved. Among other, while the action of interleukin (IL)-7 in alpha beta T cell development in mouse seems to be largely mediated through permissive survival signaling, the possible permissive role of IL-7 in early B cell development is disputed. Furthermore, FMS-like tyrosine kinase-3 ligand (F

Safe Reference Following on the Inverted Pendulum

This work discusses methods to obtain reference following on unstable systems. The task is critical; introduction of refernce signal might cause instability in some cases. It is thus interesting to develop strategies that offer acceptable reference following, but also guarantees stability. In practice similiar problems arises in flight control systems for unstable fighter aircrafts. Experimental v

Packaging demands in the food service industry

The European food service market was estimated, in 1999, to be worth US$293 billion with high profit margins and a growth rate of 2.75%. Future demand for value-added products and high levels of customization will stress the issue of keeping profit margins in the food service industry. Packaging is a critical issue, because it adheres to the product throughout the entire food service supply chain.

Comparison of atrial signal extraction algorithms in 12-lead ECGs with atrial fibrillation

Analysis of atrial rhythm is important in the treatment and management of patients with atrial fibrillation. Several algorithms exist for extracting the atrial signal from the electrocardiogram (ECG) in atrial fibrillation, but there are few reports on how well these techniques are able to recover the atrial signal. We assessed and compared three algorithms for extracting the atria] signal from th

Polymorphism and transcription of Mhc class I genes in a passerine bird, the great reed warbler

The class I genes of the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) are here investigated for the first time in a passerine bird. The great reed warbler is a rare species in Sweden with a few semi-isolated populations. Yet, we found extensive Mhc class I variation in the study population. The variable exon 3, corresponding to the alpha(2) domain, was amplified from genomic DNA with degenerated primers

Den farliga Helgeå

Med utgångspunkt i ett fall, en ryttare som drunknade då han försökte ta sig över Helgeån, diskuteras hur drunkningar utreddes i början av 1700-talet

Self-reported depression and use of antidepressants after stroke: A national survey

Background and Purpose - Depression after stroke is often described as underdiagnosed and undertreated. However, there are few data on self-reported depression and use of antidepressants in stroke patients at large. Materials and Methods - In the Swedish national quality assessment register, Riks-Stroke, 15 747 stroke survivors are recorded. They were asked about depressive mood and antidepressant

Investigation of the segregative phase separation induced by addition of polystyrene to AOT oil-continuous microemulsions

The effect of different molecular weight polystyrenes (PS) on the phase behavior of sodium 1,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT)/water/cyclohexane oil-continuous microemulsions was investigated. The surfactant-covered water droplets were treated as a pseudocomponent in the mixture, and ternary polymer/droplet/oil phase diagrams were established as a function of microemulsion droplet radius (2

Prognostic value of histopathological response to radiotherapy and microvessel density in oral squamous cell carcinomas

The prognostic value of histopathological response to preoperative radiotherapy (50 Gy) in radically resected oral carcinomas was studied in 39 consecutive patients. Microvessel density (MVD) was evaluated for relation to radioresponse and outcome. Resected tumour tissue was examined histopathologically and response to radiotherapy was scored according to induced morphological changes. Pretreatmen

Distribution of extraterrestrial chromite in Middle Ordovician Komstad Limestone in the Killeröd Quarry, southern Sweden

Sediment-dispersed extraterrestrial chromite grains (63-355 mu m) have been recovered in a section across the Arenig-Llanvirn transition in the Killerod quarry in southeastern Scania. Previous studies of the same stratigraphic interval in the Orthoceratite Limestone at Kinnekulle, ca. 350 km to the north in Vastergotland, have shown a two orders of magnitude increase in extraterrestrial chromite b

An Optimisation Approach to Cartographic Generalisation

Denna avhandling beskriver en optimerinCartographic generalisation is the process of simplifying a representation to suit the scale and purpose of a map. As such, generalisation has always been a central part in map production. This thesis is a contribution to the ongoing work on automating cartographic generalisation. Two topics are treated: optimisation methods in graphic generalisation, and propagation of updates between cartographi
