Effects of adjuvant tamoxifen therapy on cardiac disease: results from a randomized trial with long-term follow-up

Tamoxifen is associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, there are few reports on long-term effects. Using data from a large Swedish randomized trial of 5 and 2 years of adjuvant tamoxifen in women with early breast cancer, we here present results on morbidity and mortality from cardiac diseases during treatment and long-term after treatment. A total of 4,150 patients

Viscoelastic haemostatic assays and fibrinogen concentration tests during haemodilution: The effects of fibrinogen and factor XIII

Background: The efficacy of concentrates of fibrinogen and factor XIII in hypothermia and haemodilution has not yet been completely investigated. Clauss methods have not previously been evaluated perioperatively. Methods: Coagulation was assessed with rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) or free oscillation rheometry (FOR) in vitro and different fibrinogen measurement methods in observational stu

Optical Touch Pointer for Fluorescence Guided Glioblastoma Resection Using 5-Aminolevulinic Acid

Background and Objective: Total tumor resection in patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is difficult to achieve due to the tumor's infiltrative way of growing and morphological similarity to the surrounding functioning brain tissue. The diagnosis is usually subjectively performed using a surgical microscope. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a hand-held optical touch p

Microwave CMOS VCOs and Front-Ends - using integrated passives on-chip and on-carrier

Popular Abstract in Swedish De ökande kraven på högre datahastigheter inom trådlös kommunikation ställer allt högre krav på både radiosändare och mottagare, då dessa behöver utnyttja fler frekvensband med större bandbredd vid högre frekvenser. Fokus i denna avhandling ligger på högfrekvensdelen av radiomottagaren, som består av lågbrusförstärkare, blandare, och oscillatorer vid mikrovågsfrekvenserThe increasing demand for high data rates in wireless communication systems is increasing the requirements on the transceiver front-ends, as they are pushed to utilize more and wider bands at higher frequencies. The work in this thesis is focused on receiver front-ends composed of Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs), Mixers, and Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs) operating at microwave frequencies. Tra

Methane exchange in a boreal forest estimated by gradient method

Forests are generally considered to be net sinks of atmospheric methane (CH4) because of oxidation by methanotrophic bacteria in well-aerated forests soils. However, emissions from wet forest soils, and sometimes canopy fluxes, are often neglected when quantifying the CH4 budget of a forest. We used a modified Bowen ratio method and combined eddy covariance and gradient methods to estimate net CH4

Multistream faster than Nyquist signaling

We extend Mazo's concept of faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling to pulse trains that modulate a bank of subcarriers, a method called two dimensional FTN signaling. The signal processing is similar to orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) transmission but the subchannels are not orthogonal. Despite nonorthogonal pulses and subcarriers, the method achieves the isolated-pulse error perfor

No evidence for a role of the catechol-O-methyltransferase pain sensitivity haplotypes in chronic widespread pain

Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) 'pain sensitivity' haplotypes and chronic widespread pain (CWP) in two distinct cohorts. Methods Cases of CWP and controls free of pain were selected from two population-based studies: the Epidemiology of Functional Disorders study (EPIFUND) (UK) and the European Male Ageing Study (E

Effects of Heat Stress on Working Populations when facing Climate Change

It is accepted that the earth’s climate is changing in an accelerating pace, with already documented implications for human health and the environment. This literature review provides an overview of existing research findings about the effects of heat stress on the working population in relation to climate change. In the light of climate change adaptation, the purpose of the literature review was

Glial Progenitor-Like Phenotype in Low-Grade Glioma and Enhanced CD133-Expression and Neuronal Lineage Differentiation Potential in High-Grade Glioma

Background: While neurosphere-as well as xenograft tumor-initiating cells have been identified in gliomas, the resemblance between glioma cells and neural stem/progenitor cells as well as the prognostic value of stem/progenitor cell marker expression in glioma are poorly clarified. Methodology/Principal Findings: Viable glioma cells were characterized for surface marker expression along the glial

Pragmatic estimation of a spatio-temporal air quality model with irregular monitoring data

Statistical analyses of health effects of air pollution have increasingly used GIS-based covariates for prediction of ambient air quality in "land use" regression models. More recently these spatial regression models have accounted for spatial correlation structure in combining monitoring data with land use covariates. We present a flexible spatio-temporal modeling framework and pragmatic, multi-s

Substratum-dependent responses of ciliate assemblages to temperature: a natural experiment in Icelandic streams

Ciliate assemblages play a significant role in the microbial food web. The effects of environmental temperature on assemblage composition may be influenced by abiotic factors such as seasonality and disturbance, but the effects of temperature on ciliate assemblages found on different substrata have not been explored. Sandy bottoms and submerged rocks harbour dissimilar ciliate assemblages, and it

Människa och religion i klangens värld. Nutida vägar mot en teologisk musikestetik

The article presents and discusses a number of recent scholarly attempts to investigate theological and/or religious dimensions of music. On the basis of critical interpretations of these (Anglophone and German) contributions the article proposes an interdisciplinary approach to a theological aesthetics of music. Such a methodology necessitates any "theologizing" to respect the singular qualities

Alpha-1-microglobulin: Innate defence against pathological oxidation

Oxidative stress has been implicated as an important factor in the progression of many diseases. An imbalance in the redox-system may cause oxidation of cells and molecules, which might subsequently lead to tissue damage. The research presented in this thesis has focused on elucidating a possible involvement of the human protein alpha-1-microglobulin in the defence against pathological oxidation.
