Isospin Symmetry and Proton Decay: Identification of the 10+ Isomer in 54Ni

The gamma decays from an isomeric 10+ state at 6457 keV in the nucleus 54Ni have been identified using the GSI fragment separator in conjunction with the RISING Ge-detector array. The state is interpreted as the isobaric analog of the 6527-keV 10+ isomer in 54Fe. The results are discussed in terms of isospin-dependent shell-model calculations. Clear evidence is presented for a discrete l = 5 proto

Performance of the ATLAS Trigger System in 2010

Proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV and heavy ion collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 2.76 TeV were produced by the LHC and recorded using the ATLAS experiment's trigger system in 2010. The LHC is designed with a maximum bunch crossing rate of 40 MHz and the ATLAS trigger system is designed to record approximately 200 of these per second. The trigger system selects events by rapidly identifying si

A theoretical approach to molecular single-electron transistors

We present theoretical methods and computational strategies of the effects of nanoparticles on linear optical properties of molecules. We present quantum mechanical-molecular mechanics response methods for calculating electromagnetic properties of molecules interacting with nanoparticles and we report strategies for calculating electronic and redox states of molecules sandwiched between gold nanop

On the asymptotics of the scenery flow

We study the asymptotics of the scenery flow. We give corrected versions with proofs of a certain lemma by Hochman, and study some related phenomena.

Ultrasonography and color Doppler in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: diagnosis and follow-up of ultrasound-guided steroid injection in the ankle region. A descriptive interventional study.

BACKGROUND: The ankle region is frequently involved in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) but difficult to examine clinically due to its anatomical complexity. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of ultrasonography (US) of the ankle and midfoot (ankle region) in JIA. Doppler-US detected synovial hypertrophy, effusion and hyperemia and US was used for guidance of steroid injection and to

An update on the GLOB blood group system and collection.

The P blood group antigen of the GLOB system is a glycolipid structure, also known as globoside, on the red blood cells (RBCs) of almost all individuals worldwide. The P antigen is intimately related to the Pk and NOR antigens discussed in the review about the P1PK blood group system. Naturally occurring anti-P is present in the serum of individuals with the rare globoside-deficient phenotypes p,

The genetic and environmental structure jof the character sub-skales of the temperament and character inventory in adolescence

BACKGROUND: The character higher order scales (self-directedness, cooperativeness, and self-transcendence) in the temperament and character inventory are important general measures of health and well-being [Mens Sana Monograph 11:16-24 (2013)]. Recent research has found suggestive evidence of common environmental influence on the development of these character traits during adolescence. The pres

Cognitive Function After Intrauterine Growth Restriction and Very Preterm Birth

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) with absent or reversed end-diastolic blood flow in the umbilical artery and very preterm birth on cognitive outcome at 5 to 8 years of age. METHODS: We studied 34 children with IUGR born at a median of 26.9 gestational weeks (GWs) (range: 24-29 GWs) (PT-IUGR), 34 matched preterm appropriate-for-gestational age (PT-AGA) c

Fractures of the distal radius in women aged 50 to 75 years: natural course of patient-reported outcome, wrist motion and grip strength between 1 year and 2-4 years after fracture.

Fractures of the distal radius in postmenopausal women may cause prolonged pain and disability, but little is known about their natural course beyond the first year. In this study, women of 50-75 years of age, initially treated with cast or external fixation, were examined 1 year after distal radial fracture and then re-evaluated after a mean of 3 (range, 2-4) years. The evaluation included pain,

Measurement of the W W cross section in root s=7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector and limits on anomalous gauge couplings

This Letter reports a measurement of the W W production cross section in root s = 7 TeV pp collisions using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.02 fb(-1) collected with the ATLAS detector. Using leptonic decays of oppositely charged W bosons, the total measured cross section is sigma (pp -> W W) = 54.4 +/- 4.0 (stat.) +/- 3.9 (syst.) +/- 2.0 (lumi.) pb, consistent with the Standard

Momentum-space structure of quasielastic spin fluctuations in Ce3Pd20Si6

Among heavy-fermion metals, Ce3Pd20Si6 is one of the heaviest-electron systems known to date. Here we used high-resolution neutron spectroscopy to observe low-energy magnetic scattering from a single crystal of this compound in the paramagnetic state. We investigated its temperature dependence and distribution in momentum space, which was not accessible in earlier measurements on polycrystalline s

Tumor Suppressor function of the deubiquitinating enzyme BAP1 and its substrate gamma-tubulin In regulation of cell cycle and genome stability

In normal cells, the cell cycle is controlled by a complex series of signalling pathways by which a cell grows, replicates its DNA and divides. The critical task of the cell cycle is to ensure that DNA is faithfully replicated and that identical chromosomal copies are distributed equally to two daughter cells during mitosis with the help of the mitotic spindle. Thus, mitotic spindle formation is v

Vowel-to-vowel coarticulation in Japanese: The effect of consonant duration (L)

This paper examines vowel-to-vowel lingual coarticulation in sequences of vowel-bilabial consonant-vowel, where the duration of the oral closure for the consonant is either long or short. Native speakers of Japanese served as subjects. The linguistic material consisted of Japanese word pairs that only differed in the duration of the labial consonant, which was either long or short. Recordings were

Structure and reactivity of a model catalyst alloy under realistic conditions

Using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we show that a thin RhO2 oxide film forms on a Pt25Rh75(100) surface at elevated oxygen pressures and temperatures prior to the bulk oxidation. By the use of in situ surface x-ray diffraction under realistic CO oxidation reaction conditions, we show that the onset of the growth of thin RhO2 oxide film coincides with an increase in CO2 product
