On the Erasure-Correcting Capabilities of Low-Complexity Decoded LDPC Codes with Constituent Hamming Codes

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes can be constructed using constituent block codes other than single parity-check (SPC) codes. This paper considers random LDPC codes with constituent Hamming codes and investigates their asymptotic performance over the binary erasure channel. It is shown that there exist Hamming code-based LDPC codes which, when decoded with a low-complexity iterative algorithm

Observed pronunciation features in Swedish L2 produced by L1-speakers of Albanian

The number of immigrants with Albanian L1 has increased in Sweden during the last two decades. This particular group is also present in the SFI-classroom. This contribution aims to present typical pronunciation features in L2-Swedish produced by Albanian L1-speakers, based on recordings of two Albanian speakers living in Sweden.

The concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) has been underpining recycling/waste/product policy of a number of countries over the past two decades. However, it is considered that the understanding of the concept varies. This presents the findings from a survey conducted in Japan in 2013 to find out the actual perceptions of various stakeholders in Japan. It is part of a global survey con

Human prostatic acid phosphatase: cDNA cloning, gene mapping and protein sequence homology with lysosomal acid phosphatase

The cDNAs encoding human prostatic acid phosphatase were cloned and characterized. The mRNAs contain 3' noncoding regions of heterogeneous sizes 646, 1887 or 1913 nucleotides. A dimer and a monomer of the conserved Alu-repeats are present in the longer 3' noncoding sequences. The complete sequence of 354 amino acids for the mature enzyme was determined by sequencing both cDNA and protein. Human pr

Proton Scattering for Analysis of Atmospheric Particulate Matter

Proton scattering has been applied to the problem of elemental quantitative analysis of air particulate matter. Elements up through chlorine may be resolved using 16 MeV protons incident upon targets up to about 1 mg/cm2 in thickness. Using the FSU Super FM Tandem Accelerator and a large area solid state proton detector, an analysis can be performed in several minutes. Combination of this techniqu

Ultimate and serviceability limit state optimization of cold-formed steel hat-shaped beams

Cold-formed steel hat-shaped beams are commonly used in light-weight steel construction systems, such as residential housing structures. The ultimate strength of these sections is affected by their complex stability behavior (e.g. local, distortional and global buckling), therefore an advanced design methodology is needed to calculate the load bearing resistance in the ultimate limit state. On the
