Looking for Robin 2.0

A look at the work and life of British film critic Robin Wood. Includes personal reminiscences of the author's meetings with Wood as well as working on his criticism.

Implementation of a telemetry system for neurophysiological signals.

With an ever increasing need for assessment of neurophysiological activity in connection with injury and basic research, the demand for an efficient and reliable data acquisition system rises. Brain-machine interfaces is one class of such systems that targets the central nervous system. A necessary step in the development of a brain-machine interface is to design and implement a reliable and effic

Atomic spectroscopy with violet laser diodes

Laser spectroscopy with laser diodes can now also be performed in the violet/blue spectral region. a 5 mW commercially available CW laser diode operating at 404 nm was used to perform spectroscopy on potassium atoms with signal detection in absorption as well as fluorescence when operating on a potassium vapor cell and with optogalvanic detection on a potassium hollow cathode lamp. The 4s(2)S(1/2)

Exact Analysis of Continuous Review (R, Q) Policies in Two-Echelon Inventory Systems with Compound Poisson Demand

We consider a two-level inventory system with one central warehouse and N retailers. All installations apply different continuous review installation stock (R, Q) policies. The retailers face independent compound Poisson demand processes. Transportation times are constant. We present a method for exact evaluation of control policies that provides the complete probability distributions of the retai

Analytical Sociology: Bringing Culture and Identity Back In

This paper is a critique of analytical sociology as presented in Peter Hedström’s book Dissecting the Social. Our critique has two main targets. First, we believe that too little attention is being paid to the macro-to-micro link, and we argue for the importance of macro-level entities such as culture, social categories, and groups – all of which have so far been largely omitted from analytical so

Near-infrared time-resolved study of the S-1 state dynamics of the carotenoid spheroidene

Using a novel experimental approach based on near-infrared femtosecond absorption spectroscopy, we have determined the energy of the S-1 state of the carotenoid spheroidene. The energy of this state is 13 400 +/- 90 cm(-1) at both 293 and 186 K, showing that there is no temperature-induced shift of the S-1 level. A discrepancy of about 800 cm(-1) between the S-1 energy determined here and that obt

Recording Density Limit of Photon-echo Optical Storage With High-speed Writing and Reading

The first analysis to our knowledge of the optical data storage density of photon-echo storage is presented. Mainly considering signal-to-noise ratio performance, we calculate the obtainable storage density for data storage and processing using photon echoes to be approximately 100 times the theoretical limit for conventional optical data storage. This limit is similar to that theoretically calcul

Phosphorus fertilisation causes durable enhancement of phosphorus concentrations in forest soil

The duration of P fertiliser in acid forest soil was investigated in a Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) forest in southcentral Sweden. The fertilisation of the soil started in 1967, but no P has been applied since 1988. The N fertilisation is still continuing. Totally, 300 kg P per hectare, as superphosphate, and/or 1090 kg N per hectare, as ammonium nitrate, was applied. Concentrations of both
