Evidence synthesis for constructing directed acyclic graphs (ESC-DAGs): a novel and systematic method for building directed acyclic graphs

Directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) are popular tools for identifying appropriate adjustment strategies for epidemiological analysis. However, a lack of direction on how to build them is problematic. As a solution, we propose using a combination of evidence synthesis strategies and causal inference principles to integrate the DAG-building exercise within the review stages of research projects. We demon

Associations between perfluoroalkyl substances and serum lipids in a Swedish adult population with contaminated drinking water

Exposures to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have shown positive associations with serum lipids in previous studies. While many studies on lipids investigated associations with perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), there are only a few studies regarding other PFAS, such as perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS). The purpose of the current study is to investigate i

A Graphical Description of Partial Exchangeability

Partial exchangeability is sufficient for the identification of some causal effects of interest. Here we review the use of common graphical tools and the sufficient component cause model in the context of partial exchangeability. We illustrate the utility of single world intervention graphs (SWIGs) in depicting partial exchangeability and provide an illustrative example of when partial exchangeabi

Analyzing the situation of older family caregivers with a focus on health-related quality of life and pain: a cross-sectional cohort study

For a significant proportion of the older population, increasing age is associated with health problems and worsening health. Older family caregivers are largely responsible for care of next-of-kin living at home, which impacts their own physical and mental health both positively and negatively. However, evidence is insufficient regarding the health situation of older caregivers. The aim of this s

Effect Decomposition in the Presence of Treatment-induced Confounding A Regression-with-residuals Approach

Analyses of causal mediation are often complicated by treatment-induced confounders of the mediator–outcome relationship. In the presence of such confounders, the natural direct and indirect effects of treatment on the outcome, into which the total effect can be additively decomposed, are not identified. An alternative but similar set of effects, known as randomized intervention analogues to the n

Relationship between degree of heparin anticoagulation and clinical outcome in patients receiving potent P2Y12-inhibitors

Heparin is the preferred choice of anticoagulant in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute myocardial infarction (MI). An established dosage of heparin has not yet been determined, but treatment may be optimized through monitoring of activated clotting time (ACT).. New publication in Europe PMC

Incidence of distal radius fracture in a general population in southern Sweden in 2016 compared with 2001

In this population-based study, we compared the incidence of distal radius fracture in 2016 with that in the same region’s adult general population in 2001 using radiographs to identify fracture cases. We showed that the incidence decreased by 24% in 2016 compared with 2001 indicating an important development. New publication in Osteoporosis International

Robust Metrics and Sensitivity Analyses for Meta-analyses of Heterogeneous Effects

We recently suggested new statistical metrics for routine reporting in random-effects meta-analyses to convey evidence strength for scientifically meaningful effects under effect heterogeneity. First, given a chosen threshold of meaningful effect size, we suggested reporting the estimated proportion of true population effect sizes above this threshold. Second, we suggested reporting the proportion

Outcomes of Simultaneous Resections and Classical Strategy for Synchronous Colorectal Liver Metastases in Sweden: A Nationwide Study with Special Reference to Major Liver Resections

In this prospectively registered cohort study, we analyzed clinical, pathological, and survival outcomes for patients operated in the period 2008–2015 and compared the two strategies. New publication in World Journal of Surgery

Toward Causally Interpretable Meta-analysis Transporting Inferences from Multiple Randomized Trials to a New Target Population

We take steps toward causally interpretable meta-analysis by describing methods for transporting causal inferences from a collection of randomized trials to a new target population, one trial at a time and pooling all trials. We discuss identifiability conditions for average treatment effects in the target population and provide identification results. We show that the assumptions that allow infer

FAIR Maturity Evaluation of Nordic and Baltic data repositories

Science is one of the greatest collective endeavors and the most important channel for gaining knowledge. Scientific research is the collecting of data to investigate and explain a phenomenon or theory with the help of the scientific process. The idea of science is that you can only learn about a phenomenon reliably and accurately by collecting empirical data. What role does science and research p

Toward Credible Patient-centered Meta-analysis

Meta-analysis is widely used to combine the findings of multiple disparate studies of health risks or treatment response. Meta-analysis often uses a random-effects model to express heterogeneity across studies. The model interprets a weighted average of study-specific estimates as an estimate of a mean parameter across a hypothetical population of studies. New publication in Epidemiology

Validation of Questionnaire-based Case Definitions for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Various questionnaire-based definitions of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been applied using the US representative National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), but few have been validated against objective lung function data. We validated two prior definitions that incorporated self-reported physician diagnosis, respiratory symptoms, and/or smoking. We also validat
