Ratio of Cesarean Deliveries to Total Operations and Surgeon Nationality Are Potential Proxies for Surgical Capacity in Central Haiti

The World Health Organization has a standardized tool to assess surgical capacity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), but it is often resource- and time-intensive. There currently exists no simple, evidence-based measure of surgical capacity in these settings. The proportion of cesarean deliveries in regard to the total operations (C/O ratio) has been suggested as a way to assess quickly

Invasions and niche width: does niche width of an introduced crayfish differ from a native crayfish?

1. Human activities have promoted the spread of species worldwide. Several crayfish species have been introduced into new areas, posing a threat to native crayfish and other biota. Invader success may depend on the ability to utilise a wide variety of habitats and resources. Successful invaders are generally expected to have broader niches and to be more plastic than non-invasive species. 2. Using

Density fitting with auxiliary basis sets from Cholesky decompositions

Recent progress in the use of Cholesky decomposition techniques within the density fitting approximation of two-electron integrals is reviewed with emphasis on the theoretical background. Special attention is paid to the fact that errors due to the density fitting approximation can be controlled by constructing auxiliary basis sets by means of Cholesky decomposition of either the entire or certain

Interacting Effects of Cognitive Load and Adult Age on the Regularity of Whole-Body Motion During Treadmill Walking

We investigated effects of concurrent cognitive task difficulty (n-back) on the regularity of whole-body movements during treadmill walking in women and men from 3 age groups (20-30, 60-70, and 70-80 years old). Using principal component analysis of individual gait patterns, we separated main (regular) from residual (irregular) components of whole-body motion. Proportion of residual variance (RV)

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation: Risk Assessment and Clinical Outcome

Abstract Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as a treatment for patients with aortic stenosis (AS) and high surgical risk. To date, reports of short- and mid-term survival have been favourable. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate early safety, risk assessment and late survival following TAVI. Methods: In this work we studied clinical outcome, prediction of 3

Microstructure evolution during dynamic discontinuous recrystallization in particle-containing Cu

Control of the grain size in a material is vital in many engineering applications. Evolving through recrystallization, the grain size is strongly influenced by the presence of impurity particles. These particles exert drag forces on migrating grain boundaries and prevent grain boundary motion by pinning of the boundaries. Taking copper as example material, the present work establishes a novel simu

Sexual health in Rheumatoid Arthritis - a physiotherapeutic approach

Sjukdomen är kronisk och behandlas med antireumatiska läkemedel samt kompletterande teambaserad behaThe overall aim of this thesis was to study how persons experience the influence of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) on their sexual health and their experiences of communication about sexual health, in order to improve physiotherapy within the field of rheumatology. Sexual health is an integrated part of life, and persons with Rheumatoid Arthritis, RA, often experience a decreased sexual health, which c

Satellite line mapping in Eu3+-Ce3+ and Pr3+-Ce3+ codoped Y2SiO5

In this work we perform a high-resolution spectroscopic investigation of Eu3+-Ce3+ and Pr3+-Ce3+ codoped Y2SiO5 crystals. Satellite line spectra were recorded at low temperatures around the Eu3+:F-7(0) -> D-5(0) and the Pr3+:H-3(4) -> D-1(2) transitions. It is observed that the incorporation of Ce3+ as a codopant notably changes the Eu3+ and Pr3+ satellite line patterns. Satellite lines measured i

Novel insights into the role of serotonin in control of β-cell fuction

Typ 2 diabetes, tidigare ofta benämnd ”åldersdiabetes” Inadequate insulin secretion is a central component in the development of Diabetes Mellitus, resulting from reduced pancreatic β-cell mass, as well as diminished β-cell function. Islet produced 5-hydroxy tryptamine (5-HT) is suggested to regulate insulin secretion and β-cell mass in rodents during pregnancy and in metabolically challenged states. However, the role of 5-HT in control of insulin rel

IGF, PI3K and HIF-2 in Normal and Tumor Development

Cancer är en komplex sjukdom och varje tumör är speciell på sitt sCells adapt to oxygen shortage, hypoxia, by inducing a transcriptional shift governed mainly by Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-1 and HIF-2. In various cancer forms, including neuroblastoma, high expression of HIF-2α correlates with disseminated disease and poor outcome. It has become evident that HIF-1 and HIF-2 are differentially regulated over time and by oxygen levels. HIF-2α is expressed in a

Civilizing unmarried urban women in China: Authentic or Not?

Aim: The aim of this research was to explore and evaluate the new expected identities of unmarried urban women in China, by analyzing the changes in the marriage law in the last 60 years, particularly in property division in the case of divorce. Methodology: The paper proceeded under the qualitative method and designed a case study in Chengdu. The data from books, journals, policies, newspapers an

Dynamics of the glomerular filtration barrier - Physiological and pathophysiological aspects

The dynamic properties of the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB) are of fundamental importance for the understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of microalbuminuria and proteinuric diseases. In the studies of this doctoral thesis the properties of the rat glomerular filtration barrier were investigated under resting conditions and following a number of challenges using highly sensitive

Disruption of the Eng18B ENGase Gene in the Fungal Biocontrol Agent Trichoderm atroviride Affetcs Growth Conidation and Antagonistic Ability

The recently identified phylogenetic subgroup B5 of fungal glycoside hydrolase family 18 genes encodes enzymes with mannosyl glycoprotein endo-N-acetyl-b-D-glucosaminidase (ENGase)-type activity. Intracellular ENGase activity is associated with the endoplasmic reticulum associated protein degradation pathway (ERAD) of misfolded glycoproteins, although the biological relevance in filamentous fungi

Effects of Negative Valve Overlap on the Auto-Ignition Process of Lean Ethanol/Air Mixture in HCCI-Engines

This paper presents a computational study of the effects of fuel and thermal stratifications on homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion process in a personal car sized internal combustion engine. Stratified HCCI conditions are generated using a negative valve overlap (NVO) technique. The aims of this study are to improve the understanding of the flow dynamics, the heat and mass tr
