In Search of 'Community' in Zimbabwe's Fast Track Resettlement Area of Mazowe District

The thesis discusses community development in fast track resettlement areas of Zimbabwe. The land reform programme designated as the Third Revolution (Chimurenga) or fast track land reform was launched in 2000. This programme saw 12 million hectares of farming land being taken over by the state for resettlement. This research conducted in Mazowe district of Zimbabwe, provides an insight on the typ

Co-targeting of the PI3K pathway improves the response of BRCA1 deficient breast cancer cells to PARP1 inhibition.

Although pre-clinical and clinical studies on PARP1 inhibitors, alone and in combination with DNA-damaging agents, show promising results, further ways to improve and broaden the scope of application of this therapeutic approach are warranted. To this end, we have investigated the possibility of improving the response of BRCA1 mutant breast cancer cells to PARP1 inhibition by co-targeting the PI3K

Right ventricular metastasis of leiomyosarcoma.

Metastatic presentation of leiomyosarcoma in the heart is very rare. We present transthoracic echocardiography and combined PET/CT images of a case with a large right ventricular metastasis of leiomyosarcoma. The patient was placed on cytostatic drugs for palliative purposes, but passed away one month later because of an untreatable ventricular tackycardia.

Team climate inventory with a merged organization

The present study examines the team climate for innovation in work teams within a newly merged organization. Four teams working at a regional head office of a Social Insurance organization answered the Team Climate Inventory. The results were compared to those of a study by Agrell and Gustafson of more stable teams. The compareson showed that parti¬cipative safety and support for innovation were r

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the secondary transplant tissue donor influences the cross-reactivity of alloreactive memory cells.

Memory cells are currently thought to be a major barrier to tolerance induction in transplantation. However, whether alloreactive memory cells resulting from a primary transplant have cross-reactivity in a second transplant is unclear. Here, we used skin transplantation from BALB/c mice donors to pre-sensitize C(57) BL/6 (B6) mice. One month later, several strains of mice (including BALB/c, DBA/2,

A Home-Proxy Based Wireless Internet Framework in Supporting Mobility and Roaming of Real-Time Services

Due to the lack of support in mobility and quality of service, today's IF-based networks have some inherent limitations: for delivering multimedia services in a mobile environment. In the past few years, these issues have been addressed in the research community and the resulting techniques: are being standardised. However, these development have been done in isolation and become incompatible with

Nasal CpG oligodeoxynucleotide administration induces a local inflammatory response in nonallergic individuals.

Background: We have previously demonstrated the presence of toll-like receptor 9 in the nasal mucosa of both healthy and allergic individuals. CpG motifs, found in bacterial and viral DNA, elicit strong immunostimulatory effects via this receptor. CpG is known to skew the immune system towards a T helper 1 (Th1) profile, thereby suppressing Th2-driven allergic responses. This study was designed to

Positive streamer discharges along insulating surfaces

By measuring the currents associated with the streamer discharge along silicone rubber surfaces, parameters of streamer propagation such as the minimum field of streamer crossing, the field of stable streamer propagation, the mean velocity and the streamer charge distribution have been analyzed and compared to the streamer discharge in air alone. Clear differences were observed in the measured cur

Optical spectroscopy and fluorescence imaging for cancer diagnostics

Avhandlingen omfattar vidare studier av optiska kontrastmedel tillverkade av nanokristaller (nano = en miljarddels meter), vilkas This work presents optical methods for diagnosing cancer. A complementary method for diagnosing eye cancer was investigated using a technique developed within this work named transscleral optical spectroscopy (TOS). Furthermore, nano-sized crystals doped with lanthanides were exploited as probes for fluorescence imaging with direct applications to preclinical cancer research. Almost all intraocul
