Maternal anxiety about a child's diabetes risk in the TEDDY study: the potential role of life stress, postpartum depression, and risk perception

ObjectiveTo understand the association between life stress, postpartum depression (PD), maternal perception of her child's risk for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and a mother's anxiety about her child's T1D risk in mothers of genetically at risk children in The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) study. MethodsA short form of the state component (SAI) of the State-Trait Anxiety Inv

Levosimendan: Molecular mechanisms and clinical implications Consensus of experts on the mechanisms of action of levosimendan

The molecular background of the Ca2+-sensitizing effect of levosimendan relates to its specific interaction with the Ca2+-sensor troponin C molecule in the cardiac myofilaments. Over the years, significant preclinical and clinical evidence has accumulated and revealed a variety of beneficial pleiotropic effects of levosimendan and of its long-lived metabolite, OR-1896. First of all, activation of

Self-medication in insects: current evidence and future perspectives

1. Self-medication is an ability to consume or otherwise contact biologically active organic compounds specifically for the purpose of helping to clear a (parasitic) infection or reduce its symptoms. Consumption of these compounds may either take place before the infection is contracted (prophylactic consumption) or after the infection is contracted (therapeutic consumption). 2. An important insig

Metal controlled regioselectivity in the cyclometallation of 2-(1-naphthyl)-pyridine.

Cyclometallation of 2-(1-naphthyl)-pyridine is described. While cyclopalladation results in a five-membered metallacycle, cycloauration displays a completely orthogonal regioselectivity, resulting in the six-membered ring analogue. Bromination of the gold metallacycle results in the new C-H functionalisation product 2-(8-bromonaphth-1-yl)pyridine.

A Teachable Agent Based Game Affording Collaboration and Competition – Evaluating Math Comprehension and Motivation

This paper presents an educational game in mathematics based on an apprenticeship model using a teachable agent, as well as an evaluative study of how the game affects (1) conceptual understanding and (2) attitudes towards mathematics. In addition, we discuss how collaborative and competitive affordances of the game may affect understanding and motivation. 19 students played the game in pairs once

Pedogenic and biogenic alkaline-extracted silicon distributions along a temperate land-use gradient

The primary source of dissolved silicon (Si: DSi) is the weathering of silicate minerals. In recent years, it has been shown that Si cycling through vegetation creates a more soluble Si pool in the soil, as amorphous Si (ASi) deposits in plants (phytoliths) are returned to the soil through litter. Amorphous Si accumulation in soils depends on a number of factors, including land use. In addition to

Virion glycosylation governs integrity and infectivity of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus.

The possible importance of the O-linked glycosylation in virion stability and infectivity of infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) was analysed. Enzymatic treatment with O-glycosidase of radiolabelled virions under different ionic conditions, to allow for possible alternative exposure of glycosidic enzyme cleavage sites, did not alter the specific infectivity of virions re-isolated after rat

Brown tawny owls moult more flight feathers than grey ones

The mechanisms by which melanin-based colour polymorphism can evolve and be maintained in wild populations are poorly known. Theory predicts that colour morphs have differential sensitivity to environmental conditions. Recently it has been proposed that colour polymorphism covaries genetically with intrinsic and behavioural properties. Plumage moult is a costly and crucial somatic maintenance func

Atmospheric Pressure Acetylene Detection by UV Photo-Fragmentation and Induced C-2 Emission

Detection of C2H2 via UV photo-fragmentation, followed by monitoring the C(2)d(3)Pi(g)-a(3)Pi(u) fluorescence, is explored at atmospheric pressure and at temperatures of 295 K, 600 K, and 800 K, for excitation wavelengths 210 to 240 am using a broadband laser source (similar to 3 cm(-1) fwhm). At the lower temperature, C-2 emissions correlate closely with C2H2 (A) over tilde

Quality of Life and the Effect of Memantine in Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson's Disease Dementia.

Aim: To investigate quality of life (QOL) and the effect of memantine treatment in patients with Lewy body dementias. Methods: A secondary analysis of a randomized controlled study in 70 patients with Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) or dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) over 24 weeks using caregiver-rated QOL-Alzheimer's disease (AD) in domains according to the WHO's classification of health. Resu

Faster progression to AIDS and AIDS-related death among seroincident individuals infected with recombinant HIV-1 A3/CRF02_AG compared to sub subtype A3.

HIV-1 is divided into different subtypes and circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) but the impact of HIV-1 subtype/CRF on disease progression is not fully understood. We determined the HIV-1 subtype/CRF of 152 seroincident individuals from Guinea-Bissau, based on the C2-V3 region of env. Rate of disease progression was measured as time from estimated seroconversion to AIDS and AIDS-related death. H

Search for new phenomena in the dijet mass distribution using pp collision data at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Dijet events produced in LHC proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 8 TeV are studied with the ATLAS detector using the full 2012 data set, with an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1). Dijet masses up to about 4.5 TeV are probed. No resonancelike features are observed in the dijet mass spectrum. Limits on the cross section times acceptance are set at the 95% credibility leve

Emulsions-directed assembly of gold nanoparticles to molecularly-linked and size-controlled spherical aggregates

Aggregation of gold nanoparticles into soluble spherical assemblies using bi-functional ligands i.e., dithiols has recently been demonstrated but with limited control over the size of such assemblies. Herein, we report a new approach to further control the size of water dispersible spherical assemblies by confining gold nanoparticles in tiny oil droplets in water (oil-in-water emulsions) followed

MYC Synergizes with Activated BRAFV600E in Mouse Lung Tumor Development by Suppressing Senescence.

The activated RAS/RAF cascade plays a crucial role in lung cancer, but is also known to induce cellular senescence - a major barrier imposed to tumor cells early in tumorigenesis. MYC is a key factor in suppression of RAS/BRAFV600E-induced senescence in vitro. However, it is still unclear whether Myc has the same role during tumor development in vivo. Using a conditional, compound knock-in model o

Biomarker expression and St Gallen molecular subtype classification in primary tumours, synchronous lymph node metastases and asynchronous relapses in primary breast cancer patients with 10 years' follow-up.

Molecular profiles of asynchronous breast cancer metastases are of clinical relevance to individual patients' treatment, whereas the role of profiles in synchronous lymph node metastases is not defined. The present study aimed to assess individual biomarkers and molecular subtypes according to the St Gallen classification in primary breast tumours, synchronous lymph node metastases and asynchronou

Identification and Characterization of New Mechanisms in Vascular Estrogen Signalling.

Estrogen exerts vasculoprotective effects in different experimental settings through inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, stimulation of nitric oxide production and attenuation of inflammation. Although these estrogen-evoked beneficial effects have been attributed to estrogen receptor α (ERα), also ERβ and the novel ER GPR30/GPER1 probably play significant roles in vascular est
