The role of molecular polarity in cluster local structure studied by photoelectron spectroscopy

We have studied the spatial structure and electronic levels of clusters of the molecule CH3Br to investigate the effects of molecular polarity on these properties. Analysis of the core level photoclectron spectra of initially neutral CH3Br clusters shows that the C 1 s(-1) state has a 30% larger binding energy shift between free molecules and clusters than the Br 3d(-1) state. This difference is a

JJGEN: A flexible program for generating lists of j j-coupled configuration state functions

The success of large scale relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations for atomic systems rely on judiciously chosen configuration expansions. Dependent on the atomic system as well as on the studied properties, various correlation effects need to be considered. Based on the active set approach, this program allows the user to generate general lists of j j-coupled configuration

A hedging point strategy - balancing effluent quality, economy and robustness in the control of wastewater treatment plants

An operational space map is an efficient tool to compare a large number of operational strategies to find an optimal choice of setpoints based on a multicriterion. Typically, such a multicriterion includes a weighted sum of cost of operation and effluent quality. Due to the relative high cost of aeration such a definition of optimality result in a relatively high fraction of the effluent total nit

Transient waves from internal sources in non-stationary media - Numerical implementation

In this paper, the focus is on numerical results from calculations of scattered direct waves, originating from internal sources in non-stationary, dispersive, stratified media. The mathematical starting point is a general, inhomogeneous, linear, first order, 2 × 2 system of equations. Particular solutions are obtained, as integrals of waves from point sources distributed inside the scattering medi

Joint inflammation in rabbits induced by preformed immune complexes

The rabbit knee joint was used to evaluate the inflammatory properties of immune complexes with different contents of antigen. Immune complexes made in vitro with antiserum from hyperimmunized rabbits and bovine serum albumin as antigen were injected into the joints. The reactivity of the individual animal was established by injection of normal rabbit serum into the contralateral joint. The number

Fast Spectral Velocity Estimation Using Adaptive Techniques: In-vivo Results

Adaptive spectral estimation techniques are known to provide good spectral resolution and contrast even when the observation window (OW) is very short. In this paper two adaptive techniques are tested and compared to the averaged periodogram (Welch) for blood velocity estimation. The blood power spectral capon (BPC) method is based on a standard minimum variance technique adapted to account for bo

Abstract in French Cet article a deux objectif. At a first level we present an overview of four aspects of the French DP and its acquisition by adult Swedish speaking learners, namely the existence of a bare noun stage, the syntactic status of the definite article, the placement of the adjective and gender agreement. At a second level, we wish to illustrate a method in Research on Language Acquisition which is i

Effects of high protein intakes

Among other nutrients of breast milk, the amino acid pattern is considered normative throughout infancy. Exclusive breastfeeding by a healthy mother should be the standard from birth to 6 months. During the breastfeeding period the protein intake is low in the human being compared too many other animals. The protein content in breast milk is about 1 g/1 00 ml and the daily protein intake approxima

Plasticity of TRPC expression in arterial smooth muscle: correlation with store-operated Ca2+ entry.

Loss of the smooth muscle contractile phenotype is critical in atherosclerosis and in restenosis after angioplasty, but its early signals are incompletely understood. In this study, we have explored the role of transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) proteins, which have been suggested to mediate store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE). Contractility of rat cerebral arteries in organ culture is pre

SEQUENCE AND DISPERSION OF VENTRICULAR REPOLARIZATION ON THE ENDOCARDIUM AND EPICARDIUM Studies using the monophasic action potential mapping technique in humans and pigs

Materials and Methods: Monophasic action potential (MAP) were recorded, using the CARTO mapping system and NaviStar catheters, during sinus rhythm from the endocardium at 43 ± 15 LV or RV sites in 8 patients, at 61 ± 18 LV and/or RV sites in 10 pigs and during atrial pacing from the endo- and epicardium at 211 ± 54 LV and RV sites in additional 10 pigs. Local activation time (AT), MAP duration (MA

Titration of fatty acids in sugar-derived (APG) surfactants: A C-13 NMR study of the effect of headgroup size, chain length, and concentration on fatty acid pKa at a nonionic micellar interface

The pK(a) of a C-13-enriched fatty acid probe, tetradecanoic acid, was investigated in a variety of sugar-derived (APG) surfactants by using C-13 NMR to monitor the chemical environment of the probe during titration with base. There was an increase of approximately 2 pK(a) units for the probe within the micellar systems compared to the value of acetic acid in water. Analysis shows that the interfa

Increased fetal blood pressure response to maternal norepinephrine after pharmacological inhibition f norepinephrine uptake in pregnant sheep.

Objective: Norepinephrine (NE) is elevated in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia (PE). Specific uptake of NE by the NE transporter (NET) plays a central role as regulator of NE levels. Expression of NET is reduced in placentas from PE pregnancies. To study adverse fetal effects of reduced NET expression on the placental buffering capacity, the NET was pharmacologically blocked by a specific u

Discrimination of benign from malignant prostatic disease by selective measurements of single chain, intact free prostate specific antigen

Purpose: Free prostate specific antigen (PSA) in serum consists of heterogeneous molecular subforms. Recently we developed an immunoassay for selective measurement of a subfraction of free PSA called intact PSA, which has been shown to be closely associated with prostate cancer. We assessed the ability of serum intact PSA to discriminate between benign and malignant prostatic disease. Materials an

The Oral University. Attitudes to music teaching and learning in the Gambia.

The present study seeks to examine attitudes to teaching and learning among jalis in the Gambia. Although this is the main focus, the horizon of which the study is carried out, analysed and discussed, is the development of music teacher education in Sweden during the last three decades, and of which I have been a participant. The intention of the study is to expand current views on music teaching

Low risk of seizure recurrence after early withdrawal of antiepileptic treatment in the neonatal period

The risk of seizure recurrence within the first year of life was evaluated in infants with neonatal seizures diagnosed with a combination of clinical signs, amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, and standard EEG. Fifty eight of 283 (4.5%) neonates in tertiary level neonatal intensive care had seizures. The mortality in the infants with neonatal seizures was 36.2%. In 31 survi

Midwives' attitudes to and knowledge about a newly introduced foetal screening method.

A number of screening procedures are offered by midwives during pregnancy and the number is increasing rapidly. The measurement of nuchal translucency is a fairly new ultrasound method for antenatal screening, primarily for Down syndrome. The results give a better risk calculation than maternal age alone and can mean a decrease in the number of invasive procedures needed to identify this syndrome
