Mercury in the HgMn stars chi Lupi and HR 7775
Observations of mercury lines in the HgMn stars chi Lupi and HR 7775 made with the Hubble Space Telescope Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph are presented and analyzed. In chi Lupi we find that all observed lines are consistent with the same isotopic mixture (essentially pure (204)Hg). Strong ionization anomalies are present, with UV Hg I lines being too weak and Hg III lines too strong for the

By how much does increased nuchal translucency increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcome in chromosomally normal fetuses? A study of 16 260 fetuses derived from an unselected pregnant population.
Objective: In this study we aimed to estimate the magnitude of a possible increase in risk of adverse outcome in fetuses with normal karyotype and increased nuchal translucency (NT), and to determine bow well NT measurements can distinguish between fetuses with normal and adverse outcome. Methods: We studied 16260 consecutive fetuses with normal karyotype derived from an unselected pregnant popula
Room Fires and Combustible Linings
An extensive research program on combustible wall lining materials has been carried out in Sweden. Several lining materials were tested in full scale room tests and 1/3 scale model room tests for two different scenarios, A and B. Scenario A refers to the case where walls and ceiling are covered by the lining material, scenario B where lining materials are mounted on walls only. A model is presente
Elevated Plasma Levels of Nt-proBNP in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes Without Overt Cardiovascular Disease.
Validity and reliability of functional performance tests in meniscectomized patients with or without knee osteoarthritis.
Long-term effects of Ca(2+) on structure and contractility of vascular smooth muscle
Culture of dispersed smooth muscle cells is known to cause rapid modulation from the contractile to the synthetic cellular phenotype. However, organ culture of smooth muscle tissue, with maintained extracellular matrix and cell-cell contacts, may facilitate maintenance of the contractile phenotype. To test the influence of culture conditions, structural, functional, and biochemical properties of r
Extending an Industrial Robot Controller-Implementation and Applications of a Fast Open Sensor Interface
Many promising robotics research results were obtained during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Some examples include Cartesian force control and advanced motion planning. Now, 20 years and many research projects later, many technologies still have not reached industrial usage. An important question to consider is how this situation can be improved for future deployment of necessary technologies. To
Transnational Party Alliances : Analysing the Hard-Won Alliance Between Conservatives and Christian Democrats in the European Parliament
This study examines processes of transnational alliance-building among political parties in the European Union (EU). It is associated with theories of transnational relations, neofunctionalist integration theory and domestic politics approaches to international co-operation and integration. The overall aim of the study is to contribute to the understanding and growth of knowledge of transnational
Molecular cloning and tissue distribution of cDNA encoding a novel chemoattractant-like receptor
With the application of a homology screening strategy, including PCR amplification and southern blot hybridization, a novel cDNA was cloned from rat liver and anterior pituitary libraries. It was found to encode a 371-amino acid protein which has the characteristics of a heptahelix receptor and shows structural identity to members of the chemoattractant receptor family. A primary receptor message
Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of enzyme-hydrolysed carboxymethylcellulose for investigation of enzyme selectivity and substituent pattern
A series of celloendoglucanases: Bacillus agaradhaerens Cel 5a, Humicola insolens Cel 5a, H. insolens Cel 7b, H. insolens Cel 45a, Trichoderma reesei Cel 7b, and T reesei Cel 45a were used to hydrolyse carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and the hydrolysis products were investigated with a novel liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. Separation was achieved using a graphitised carbon chr
Genetics of gestational diabetes mellitus.
About 2-5% of all pregnant women develop gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during their pregnancies and the prevalence has increased considerably during the last decade. GDM is a heterogeneous disorder that is defined as carbohydrate intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. It is manifested when pancreatic beta cells are no longer able to compensate for the increased insulin
Stark interaction for excited states in alkali atoms, investigated by laser spectroscopy
The scalar polarizability constanta0 for excitedS- andD-states in rubidium and cesium was measured utilizing a two-step excitation scheme. An rf lamp and a single-mode dye laser were used to excite the atoms in a collimated atomic beam. Values ofa0 were determined for the 9–102S1/2 and 7–82D3/2 states of rubidium and for the 10–132S1/2, 9–102D3/2 and 9–112D5/2 states of cesium. Further, the isotop

Transendothelial transport of low-density lipoprotein and albumin across the rat peritoneum in vivo: Effects of the transcytosis inhibitors NEM and filipin
This study was performed to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the transport of albumin and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) across capillary walls in vivo. To separate transcytosis from passive, 'porous' transport, we tested the effects of the transcytosis inhibitors N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and filipin given intraperitoneally on the peritoneal capillary clearance of LDL and albumin in anesthe
5 ' flanking variants of resistin are associated with obesity
Diabetes and obesity have long been known to be related. The recently characterized adipocyte hormone resistin (also called FIZZ3/ADSF) has been implicated as a molecular link between impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and obesity in mice. A search for sequence variants at the human resistin locus identified nine single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) but no coding variants. An investigation into th
