Normative positions within an algebraic approach to normative systems

The formal analysis of normative systems as initiated by Alchourrón and Bulygin can be complemented by the analysis of normative positions as pursued by Kanger, Lindahl, Sergot and Jones. The paper is a step towards integrating the two approaches within an algebraic theory of so-called Boolean quasi-orderings (Bqo's). In the general Bqo theory presented, a number of theoretical tools are introduce

Supercompatibilism and Free Will

There is a fact of the matter about the nature of the human will and whether it can be considered ‘free’. To investigate this fact is attempting to answer what can be termed the metaphysical question of free will (M-question). The M-question is not identical to the problem of free will. ‘The problem of free will’ is often presented as one of two distinct problems (or sometimes a combination of the

Performance analysis of coded OFDM on fading channels with non-ideal interleaving and channel knowledge

We investigate the coded bit-error rate (BER) in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system in a Rayleigh-fading channel. The system uses a pilot-based channel estimator and the effects of non-ideal channel knowledge and non-ideal interleaving are analysed. The coded BER is estimated with an analytical method proposed by Cavers and Ho, which involves truncation of the union bound.

Carelessness or Curatorial Chutzpah? : Controversies Surrounding Street Art in the Museum

My paper discussed two controversies surrounding the exhibition Art in the Streets, which was shown at the MOCA in Los Angeles April 17th - August 8th 2011. One focal point was the reaction of conservative American commentators to the exhibition in general; another the reactions of agents within the street art world to the removal of one specific artwork. Contrary to the session chairs’ suggesti
