Frost Resistance of Building Materials : Proceedings of the 3rd Nordic Research Seminar in Lund, 1999

This report contains papers presented at a Research Seminar , or rather "workshop", organised by our Department. It is the third in a series. The previous seminars were held in 1993 and 19961• The seminar is "Nordic", by which is meant that the speakers came from the Scandinavian countries -Demnark, Norway, Sweden- and Finland. Certainly there are other Nordic countries in which frost is a real pr

Conservation laws of the Camassa-Holm equation

We use the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the Camassa-Holm equation to show that its conservation laws H-n[m] are homogeneous with respect to the scaling m --> lambdam. Moreover, a direct argument is presented proving that H-1, H-2,..., are of local character. Finally, simple representations of the conservation laws in terms of their variational derivatives are derived and used to obtain a constructi

Expression of antioxidant enzymes in rat retinal ischemia followed by reperfusion.

To evaluate the expression and protein levels of antioxidant enzymes in the rat retina exposed to oxidative stress induced by ischemia-reperfusion injury. Retinal ischemia was induced in female Wistar rats by ligation of the optic nerve and vessels behind the left eye bulb, and was followed by reperfusion for 0, 3, 6, or 24 hours. The right eye served as control. RNA and protein were extracted sim

Efficient internalization into low-passage glioma cell lines using adenoviruses other than type 5: an approach for improvement of gene delivery to brain tumours

There is a need for improvement of the commonly used adenovirus vectors based on serotype 5. This study was performed on three adenovirus serotypes with a CAR-binding motif (Ad4p, Ad5p and Ad17p) and three non-CAR-binding serotypes (Ad11p, Ad16p and Ad21p). The capacity of these alternative adenovirus vector candidates to deliver DNA into low-passage glioma cell lines from seven different donors w

Beach nourishment projects, practices, and objectives - a European overview

The uses of beach fill in the countries of the European Union are highlighted and discussed with respect to the general situation, project type and objectives, design and evaluation procedures, legal framework, and financial aspects. As expected, significant differences were found among the investigated countries. In general, the study shows that it would be very profitable for south European coun

Dietary fiber decreases fasting blood glucose levels and plasma LDL concentration in noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients

Realistic high-fiber and regular low-fiber diets were given for 8 wk each to noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients whose diabetes was being controlled satisfactorily by diet alone. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the metabolic effects of dietary fiber without changing energy intake or proportions of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. The high-fiber diet induced lower fasti

Pollen competitive ability: the effect of proportion in two-donor crosses

Pollen competitive ability depends on the innate capacity of a pollen donor to produce pollen that reaches the ovules fast, but could also be a consequence of the ability to interfere with pollen from other donors. In a greenhouse study on Viola tricolor, we examined the relative importance of both of these effects by performing crosses where we varied the pollen load composition of two donors. We

Defense mechanisms: Theoretical, Research, and Clinical Perspectives

Contains 27 chapters on defense mechanisms with authors from 10 countries, 6 of them from Lund. The coverage is comprehensive including theories of psychological defense, methods to describe defense empirically, studies of defense in various clinical groups, etc. The book can be used, in its entirety or in parts, as a text for students in clinical psychology.

Vertebrate host specificity of wild-caught blackflies revealed by mitochondrial DNA in blood

Blood-feeding blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) transmit pathogens, harass vertebrate hosts and may cause lethal injuries in attacked victims, but with traditional methods it has proved difficult to identify their hosts. By matching mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences in blood collected from engorged blackflies with stored sequences in the GenBank database, relationships between 17 blackfly species

Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry and scanning electrochemical microscopy studies of the pH-dependent dissolution of 2-electron mediators immobilized on zirconium phosphate containing carbon pastes

A detailed study is presented on the leaking of two different 2-electron-transfer redox mediators from zirconium phosphate-modified carbon-paste electrodes. Two redox mediators commonly used in bioelectrochemistry, viz. methylene green and riboflavin, were adsorbed on zirconium phosphate and further integrated into carbon paste. Fast scan cyclic voltammetry and scanning electrochemical microscopy

Runoff generation in a plough-drained cutover fen in Central Finland

The hydrology of a cutover fen was studied from May to October in 1995 and 1996. Rainfall equivalent depths were measured every 15 min and stream runoff was continuously monitored. Water table depths were measured bi-weekly during 1995 and continuously during 1996. Storm runoff was separated into different components; rain falling directly into channels and rapid groundwater response based on a co

Lifetime measurements in neutral and singly ionized vanadium

Radiative lifetimes of ten odd-parity levels of V I belonging to the 3d(3)4s4p and 3d(4)4p configurations and of 11 odd-parity levels of V II belonging to the 3d(3)4p configuration are reported. The lifetimes were measured with use of single-step excitation and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The neutral and singly ionized vanadium atoms were produced in a laser-induced vanadium plasma. (
