Simmering Tensions and Emerging Conflicts Among Key Group Actors Amid Capitalist Transformation in Northern Ghana

A capitalist agrarian transformation is unfolding in northern Ghana, marked by shifts in crop types, rapid increases in farm sizes and deepening rural social differentiation. This paper investigates these dynamics through a mixed-methods approach across six farming communities in two districts, focusing on how social differentiation, accumulation, dispossession and exploitation reshape the region.

Contact Allergy to Methacrylate Containing Nail Products : Lack of Impact of EU Legislation. An Audit on Behalf of the European Environmental Contact Dermatitis Research Group (EECDRG)

Background: There is a current fashion for the use of methacrylate-containing nail cosmetics that can induce allergic contact dermatitis. European Union (EU) legislation was introduced in 2021 that had the aim of preventing its development. Objectives: To assess prevalence and exposures causing contact allergy to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) prior to and following implementation of the legis

Moonlighting complement inhibitors and their link to human diseases

Breast cancer and type 2 diabetes are major health concerns worldwide. This thesis has focused on novel non-canonical roles of two complement inhibitors, which led to the discovery of new mechanisms and factors at play in these diseases. The sushi domain-containing protein 4 (SUSD4) was previously portrayed as a breast cancer suppressor, but no mechanism was identified. In paper I, using a syngene

Clinical Applications of Bone Marrow CD34 Immunohistochemistry (BM CD34 IHC) Assay : International Council for Standardization in Hematology (ICSH) Guidelines

Introduction: Investigation of bone marrow (BM) trephine biopsies and/or clot sections by CD34 immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing has been used by pathologists for several decades, and its clinical value has been well established with QBEND10 being the most frequently used primary antibody (Ab) clone. However, most other parameters related to the IHC protocol as well as the readout vary widely bet

Uncomfortable interviews : A research journey of discomfort and how to make the most of it

How does discomfort affect research interviewing? Recent contributions suggest that researchers do not always experience discomfort as problematic but also as productive. We explore our experiences of, and strategies for, uncomfortable interviews. Based on experiences of interviewing right-wing populist Twitter activists in the United States and Sweden, we make four claims. First, discomfort may a

Psychological risk and protective factors of immunity : a cross-cultural network analysis

Evidence shows psychological factors (e.g. stress) are linked to immunity, yet there is a lack of research investigating the complex interactions between psychological factors and immune function. Network analysis is useful to investigate complex interrelations between relevant health-related variables. This study applied network analyses to examine associations between psychological protective fa

Setting the AI Agenda : Evidence from Sweden in the ChatGPT Era

This paper examines the development of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) meta-debate in Sweden before and after the release of ChatGPT. From the perspective of agenda-setting theory, we propose that it is an elite outside of party politics that is leading the debate – i.e. that the politicians are relatively silent when it comes to this rapid development. We also suggest that the debate has become This paper examines the development of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) meta-debate in Sweden before and after the release of ChatGPT. Differential Cytotoxicity and Inflammatory Responses to Particulate Matter Components in Airway Structural Cells

Particulate matter (PM) is a major component of ambient air pollution. PM exposure is linked to numerous adverse health effects, including chronic lung diseases. Air quality guidelines designed to regulate levels of ambient PM are currently based on the mass concentration of different particle sizes, independent of their origin and chemical composition. The objective of this study was to assess th

Word embeddings on ideology and issues from Swedish parliamentarians’ motions : a comparative approach

Quantitative analysis of large-scale political text data in the form of word embeddings has great potential for systematising differences between political parties. We examine the differences between embeddings obtained from speakers from the two competitors for the PM position in Sweden (Social Democrats and Moderates) over a 30-year period. The goal is to compare how off-the-shelf general pre-trQuantitative analysis of large-scale political text data in the form of word embeddings has great potential for systematising differences between political parties. Osteocalcin in Infancy and Early Childhood and Its Correlation With Later Growth and Body Composition : A Longitudinal Birth Cohort Study

Background: Osteocalcin is a metabolic active hormone, which correlates positively with bone formation and inversely with body mass index and waist circumference in adults. Objectives: To investigate whether osteocalcin in infancy and early childhood were related to childhood growth or body composition. Methods: A Swedish longitudinal birth cohort with blood samples from 551 children from birth un

Reflection to enhance dental students' awareness of and comfort with uncertainty - an experimental study

Background Uncertainty is present in many situations in dental practice, but must not prevent wise clinical decision-making. Dental education should acknowledge uncertainty and teach useful management strategies. This study explored if dental students are aware of, and comfortable with uncertainty. The aims were to (i) measure students’ comfort or discomfort with and awareness of uncertainty while

Adherence to the Swedish paediatric guidelines for urinary tract infections

Aim: To audit adherence to the Swedish paediatric guidelines for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in infants. Secondary objectives were to compare findings on imaging performed according to the guidelines with imaging without guideline support and to identify predictors of non-adherence. Methods: A prospective multicentre study of infants <1 year treated at paediatric hospitals for their first UTI.

High-performance anion exchange membranes based on poly(oxindole benzofuran dibenzo-18-crown-6)s functionalized with hydroxyl and quaternary ammonium groups for alkaline water electrolysis

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) play a vital role in AEM water electrolysis (AEMWE), a promising technology for hydrogen production. However, it remains challenging to develop AEMs that simultaneously achieve high OH− conductivity, robust alkaline stability, and sustained operational performance in AEMWE. In the present study, we report on a class of high-performance, readily synthesized AEMs base

Politics interferes with sport, whether we like it or not, not least in foreign policy. Despite this, the history of Swedish sport's foreign policy is largely unwritten. Is there a common thread in how the sports movement has related to nations that for one reason or another are perceived as controversial or reprehensible? What criteria does the sports movement use to decide who should and should
