The Politics of Profits: Profit Squeeze and Political-Economic Change in Sweden, 1975–85

In the mid- to late 1970s, the Swedish economy faced a profit squeeze which threatened to hamper investments and the creation of jobs. This engendered a massive debate in the media and among economists and policymakers. This article investigates what I call ‘the politics of profits, the debates around the role of corporate profits in a democratic capitalist society and economy and the policy measu

How reliable are process-based 222radon emission maps? Results from an atmospheric 222radon inversion in Europe

The radioactive noble gas radon (222Rn) is a suitable tracer for atmospheric transport and mixing processes that can be used to evaluate and calibrate atmospheric transport models or to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions using the so-called radon tracer method (RTM). However, these applications require reliable estimates of the 222Rn fluxes from the soil. This study evaluates two process-base

Nordic perspective on System Integrity Protection Schemes in relation to capacity allocation

The urgent need to address climate change and pollution prompts societies worldwide to adopt carbon neutral energy and electrification. To facilitate this, a range of technologies and policies will be needed. Alternatives to traditional power grid reinforcement, such as grid-enhancing technologies and system automation, are particularly attractive due to their potentially low cost and fast deploym

Induced polarization for landfill leakage imaging with interferences from metallic structures: modelling and field experiment

Metallic infrastructure, such as steel sheet situated within landfills, poses significant challenges to accurate tracking of leachate using induced polarization (IP) methods. The application of IP method is efficient to delineate leakage; however, the presence of metallic structures can cause an interference on the survey and generate high-chargeability anomalies as observed in field survey. To co

Multi-disciplinary lidar applications

Lidar is a powerful technique normally associated with atmospheric monitoring. However, lidar techniques, also of the laser-induced fluorescence and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy varieties, provide many new possibilities in unconventional fields including cultural heritage and ecological applications.

Ctapipe - Prototype Open Event Reconstruction Pipeline for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) is the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory currently under construction. It will improve over the current generation of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) by a factor of five to ten in sensitivity and it will be able to observe the whole sky from a combination of two sites: a northern site in La Palma, Spain, and a south

The mortality-fertility relationship from the economic demography perspective

While Ellis, Reid, and Kramer’s life history framework is convincing in explaining individual variation in life history strategies, it has certain limitations, which we discuss – drawing notably on the economic theory of fertility choice. In particular, we suggest that ambient cues to extrinsic mortality alone are not sufficient to trigger sustained net fertility decline.

Spotlight on innovation : key insights from the extracellular vesicle cluster meeting at the European Innovation Council

The field of extracellular vesicles (EVs) is rapidly advancing, offering promising applications in diagnostics, therapeutics, and drug delivery. However, the translation of EV-based technologies to the clinic faces significant challenges related to heterogeneity, scalable biomanufacturing, and regulatory compliance. To address these issues, the European Innovation Council (EIC), in collaboration w

Organ Specificity and Commonality of Epigenetic Aging in Low- and High-Running Capacity Rats

Epigenetic drift, which is gradual age-related changes in DNA methylation patterns, plays a significant role in aging and age-related diseases. However, the relationship between exercise, epigenetics, and aging, and the molecular mechanisms underlying their interactions are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), epigenetic aging, and prom

Accelerometer-Measured Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior in Individuals With and Without Chronic Diseases : Cross-Sectional Results of 27,890 Adults From the Swedish CArdioPulmonary BioImage Study Cohort

Background: This study compared levels of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) in adults with and without chronic diseases or multimorbidity, acknowledging sociodemographic factors. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted with data from 27,890 participants (52% women), aged 50–64, from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study cohort. Over 1500 chronic diseases were includ

LIDAR Techniques for studying insect migration and distributions

LIDAR techniques have been extensively used for studies of aerosol particles. Fluorescence LIDAR was employed for studying natural bio aerosols, such as pollen, but also possible warfare agents. Insects, being "large aerosol" particles clearly give rise to LIDAR returns. Recently, honey bees were studied by polarization reflectance LIDAR and their superior olfactory abilities were used in attempts

A SegNet-Based Approach for Road Label Placement Integrating Geometric and Textual Information

As a crucial tool for enhancing the readability and comprehensibility of geoinformation, automated label placement in mapping applications remains a significant challenge, particularly when generalizing the label placement process for high-density maps, despite the availability of tools such as QGIS-PAL and ArcGIS-Maplex label engine. This study focuses on utilizing deep learning (DL) for road lab

Sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array to the gamma-ray emission from neutrino sources detected by IceCube

Gamma-ray observations of the astrophysical neutrino sources are fundamentally important for understanding the underlying neutrino production mechanism. We investigate the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) ability to detect the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray counterparts to the neutrino-emitting Active Galaxies. The CTA performance under different configurations and array layouts is computed based

A spacetime model for the perturbative swing

We present the development of a new colour reconnection model in Pythia where the full spacetime separation between partons constrains the reconnection probability throughout the final-state radiative shower. Building upon previous ideas of a perturbative dipole-based model, our objective is to introduce realistic spatially-based colour reconnections within the Angantyr model for heavy-ion collisi
