Collective Trust Behavior

This paper investigates trust behavior in situations where decision-makers are large groups and the decision mechanism is collective. Theories from behavioral economics and psychology suggest that trust in such situations may differ from interindividual trust. The experimental results here reveal a large difference in trust but not in trustworthiness between the individual and collective setting.

A linguistic-engineering approach to large-scale requirements management

Developing large, complex software products aimed at broad markets involves identifying and maintaining the link between product requirements and the continuous, massive inflow of customers' wishes. The manual linkage performed today is cumbersome, time-consuming, and error-prone. Automating this support through linguistic engineering could save considerable time and improve software quality. This

Thermodynamics of binding of alpha-cyclodextrin to straight-chain alkyl derivatives in aqueous solution

Apparent standard Gibbs energy, enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity data of the interactions of alpha-cyclodextrin (alphaCD) to some n-carboxylates H(CH2)(n)COO- (n = 4 - 6), are determined by isothermal titration microcalorimetry at different temperatures in phosphate buffer, pH 9.0, assuming a 1 : 1 model in dilute solution. Modelling of contributions of the thermodynamic properties of the solu

Daily Physical Activity, Body Fat and Aerobic Fitness in Children

Introduction: Physical inactivity, low aerobic fitness and obesity are all associated with an increased risk of a wide range of diseases in adults. Promotion of physical activity, improvement of aerobic fitness and regulation of body weight in children may be of importance, as low physical activity, low aerobic fitness and obesity early in life have been known to track into adulthood. However, rel

Effects of breaking current conservation on the phase properties of two-terminal quantum systems

We study the reflection and transmission phase properties of two-terminal quantum structures coupled to a third lead. The systems are effectively three-terminal and current conservation is broken with regard to the original two-terminal systems. Two structures, a waveguide with an attached stub quantum dot and a waveguide with an inline, double-barrier confined quantum dot, are considered. The tra

Carotid dissection with permanent and transient occlusion or severe stenosis: Long-term outcome

OBJECTIVE: To compare the rate of ischemic events and intracranial hemorrhage in the long-term follow-up of patients with persistent and transient severe stenosis or occlusion of the internal carotid artery (ICA) due to spontaneous dissection (ICAD). METHODS: One hundred and sixty-one consecutive patients with unilateral ICAD causing severe stenosis or occlusion were examined clinically and by ult

Artificial carrier for oxygen supply in biological systems

Several poly (dimethylsiloxanes) (PDMS) copolymers of dimethylsiloxane (DMS) with ethylene or propylene oxide were tested as artificial carriers for the delivery of oxygen to biological systems. Copolymers with a DMS content of 33% or lower enhanced glucose oxidation by 200% in contrast to the 25% increase produced by the same concentration of perfluorodecalin. When 0.05% of the copolymer with 18%

Intra-Generational Trust - a Semi-Experimental Study of Trust Among Different Generations

From a public database in Sweden we obtained a subject pool consisting of one group of 20 years old and another group exactly 50 years older. The groups participated in a mail-based trust game, in which the young cohort exhibited more trust than the older one. Subjects significantly preferred to place trust in co-players of their own cohort and of the female sex. When amounts sent and proportions

Sequence Analysis of the Capsid Gene during a Genotype II.4 Dominated Norovirus Season in One University Hospital: Identification of Possible Transmission Routes.

Norovirus (NoV) is a leading cause of gastroenteritis and genotype II.4 (GII.4) is responsible for the majority of nosocomial NoV infections. Our objective was to examine whether sequencing of the capsid gene might be a useful tool for the hospital outbreak investigation to define possible transmission routes. All NoV positive samples submitted from one university hospital during the 2007/8 season

Single-laser shot fluorescence lifetime imaging on the nanosecond timescale using a Dual Image and Modeling Evaluation algorithm

A novel technique, designated dual imaging and modeling evaluation (DIME), for evaluating single-laser shot fluorescence lifetimes is presented. The technique is experimentally verified in a generic gas mixing experiment to provide a clear demonstration of the rapidness and sensitivity of the detector scheme. Single-laser shot fluorescence lifetimes of roughly 800 ps with a standard deviation of s
