Literature-Culture-Media: Contemporary Writing in English
This course offers a survey of contemporary writing in English across a range of genres (poetry, drama, fiction) and from a variety of national and cultural contexts, from the 1980s until the present day. The course examines the major currents of contemporary writing in English and explores, through a combination of close-reading and theoretical perspectives, the status of contemporary literature in English as both a discipline and an institutional practice. The course considers, in addition, the perspectives offered by contemporary writing in English on identity (gender, class, race/ethnicity, nationality); genre; and other key positions in contemporary critical philosophy, including post-structuralism, postmodernism, queer theory, and ecological criticism.
Seminars will comprise mini-lecture and close, group discussion of the texts, and will be supported, as needed, by a selection of appropriate secondary material and other resources.
The course is included in the Master of Arts programme in Literature – Culture – Media with a specialisation in English Literature. It is also offered as a single course.
