Ximelagatran Compared with Warfarain for prevention of thromboembolism in patients with nonvalvular atiral fibrillaton: Rationale. Objectives and design of a pair of clinical trials and baseline patient characteristics (SPORTIF III and V).

Background Ximelagatran is a novel, oral direct thrombin inhibitor under investigation as an alternative to warfarin for prevention of thromboembolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF). Two long-term studies in patients with AF and at least one additional risk factor for stroke are underway to compare the safety and efficacy of fixed-dose ximelagatran (36 mg bid) without coagu

Cohomology of 3-dimensional color Lie algebras

We develop the cohomology theory of color Lie algebras due to Scheunert-Zhang in a framework of non-homogeneous quadratic Koszul algebras. In this approach, the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex of a color Lie algebra becomes a standard Koszul complex for its universal enveloping algebra, providing a constructive method for computation of cohomology. As an application, we compute cohomologies with trivi

Sticky Landscapes and Smooth Experiences: The Biopwer of Tourism Mobilities in the Öresund Region

As landscapes become ordered according to certain sets of economic, political, ecological or social practices and discourses, other possible orderings become limited in their potential. The article illustrates this with an example taken from the field of tourism and place marketing. The empirical focus is golf experiences in Scania, Sweden, bookable by individual consumers over the Internet. The o

Primary recovery of a genetically engineered Trichoderma reesei endoglucanase I (Cel 7B) fusion protein in cloud point extraction systems.

Here we present data to demonstrate how partitioning of a hydrophilic enzyme can be directed to the hydrophobic detergent-enriched phase of an aqueous two-phase system by addition of short stretches of amino acid residues to the protein molecule. The target enzyme was the industrially important endoglucanase I, EGI (endo-1,4-beta-D-glucan-4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.4, Cel7B) of Trichoderma reese

Pre-penetration events in fungal parasitism of nematode eggs

The present investigation deals with the main factors involved in early infection of nematode eggs by fungal parasites. We studied the effect of hydrophobicity on appressorium formation by germlings of Pochonia rubescens (syn. Verticillium suchlasporium), P. chlamydosporia (syn. V. chlamydosporium) and Lecanicillium lecanii (syn. V. lecanii). Appressoria were frequently formed on hydrophobic surfa

The conodont fauna in the middle ordovician Eoplacognathus pseudoplanus Zone of Baltoscandia

Conodont faunas from the Eoplacognathus pseudoplanus Zone in five main areas of Middle Ordovician rocks in Sweden are described and discussed and compared with faunas of comparable age from neighbouring areas. The investigation is based on 118 samples which together yielded 175 114 conodont elements. The Swedish conodont faunas are intermediate between shallower-water faunas from the eastern part

All-diode-laser ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy for sulfur dioxide detection

Ultraviolet radiation around 302 nm was produced by sum-frequency generation in beta-barium borate employing a blue and a near-infrared diode laser. The diode-laser-based spectrometer has a mode-hop-free tuning range of 50 GHz and was used for high-resolution spectroscopic detection of sulfur dioxide. Differential measurements of several gas concentrations, at low pressure as well as at ambient at

A new concept for large deformable mirrors for extremely large telescopes

For extremely large telescopes, there is strong need for thin deformable mirrors in the 3-4 m class. So far, feasibility of such mirrors has not been demonstrated. Extrapolation from existing techniques suggests that the mirrors could be highly expensive. We give a progress report on a study of an approach for construction of large deformable mirrors with a moderate cost. We have developed low-cos

Background factors as determinants of satisfaction with care among first-episode psychosis patients

Objective To evaluate the impact of demographic and psychosocial background factors and psychiatric and functional status before and at admission on the patients' satisfaction with care (PSC) among first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients. Method One year after entering the Parachute Project, 134 FEP patients completed a patient satisfaction questionnaire. The association with demographic and psycho

Long-term metabolic effects of urinary diversion on skeletal bone: histomorphometric and mineralogic analysis

OBJECTIVES. To evaluate the long-term influence of different types of intestinal urinary diversion on skeletal bone and its mineral content. METHODS. Densitometry was used to estimate bone mineral content, and bone biopsies were analyzed with histomorphometric technique. The study comprised 20 patients with conduit urinary diversion and 19 with cecal continent reservoir, all followed up for more t

Bond Length and Bond Order in One of the Shortest Cr-Cr Bonds

Multiconfigurational quantum chemical calculations on the R-diimines dichromium compound confirm that the Cr-Cr bond, 1.80 angstrom, is among the shortest Cr-I-Cr-I bonds. However, the bond between the two Cr atoms is only a quadruple bond rather than a quintuple bond. The reason why the bond is so short has to be attributed to the strain in the NCCN ligand moieties.

A randomized trial of basing treatment on human papillomavirus and/or cytology results in low-grade cervical lesion triage

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to compare management algorithms that base treatment with loop electrosurgical excision procedure on human papillomavirus and/or repeat Papanicolaou test smear results. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized trial that referred 674 women with either atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance or low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions cytology results, detected

All-optical cw quadruple resonance excitation: A coherently driven five-level molecular system

We report here a continuous-wave, high-resolution, and all-optical quadruple resonance laser excitation experiment. To demonstrate this excitation technique, we have used an inhomogeneously broadened molecular sample (Na-2). We emphasize the enhanced ability afforded by the technique to reach new ranges of internuclear separation as well as access to a large range of molecular electronic states. U

Learning From Organizational Incidents: Resilience Engineering for High-Risk Process Environments

For years, safety improvements have been made by evaluating incident reports and analyzing errors and violations. Current developments in safety science, however, challenge the idea that safety can meaning-fully be be seen as the absence of errors or other negatives. Instead, the question becomes whether a company is aware of positive ways in which people, at all level of the organisation, contrib

Analysis of HLA DR, HLA DQ, C4A, FcgammaRIIa, FcgammaRIIIa, MBL, and IL-1Ra allelic variants in Caucasian systemic lupus erythematosus patients suggests an effect of the combined FcgammaRIIa R/R and IL-1Ra 2/2 genotypes on disease susceptibility.

Dysfunction in various parts of immune defence, such as immune response, immune complex clearance, and inflammation, has an impact on pathogenesis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We hypothesised that combinations of common variants of genes involved in these immune functions are associated with susceptibility to SLE. The following variants were analysed: HLA DR3, HLA DQ2, C4AQ0, Fcgamma rec
