On parametric effects of wettability, surface roughness and porosity on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer

Phase-change heat transfer enhancement is of critical importance to meet high cooling demands. Recently, surface engineering (surface modification) is emerged as a promising heat transfer enhancement method, especially with the development of nanotechnology. Surface parameters such as wettability, surface roughness and porosity are modified by surface engineering. This work aims to discuss the parPhase-change heat transfer enhancement is of critical importance to meet high cooling demands. Effects of a healthy Nordic diet on gene expression changes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells in response to an oral glucose tolerance test in subjects with metabolic syndrome : A SYSDIET sub-study

Background: Diet has a great impact on the risk of developing features of metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We evaluated whether a long-term healthy Nordic diet (ND) can modify the expression of inflammation and lipid metabolism-related genes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) during a 2-h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in

Spatial disparities in melanoma incidence and prognosis with consideration to stage at diagnosis, gender and marital status

Screening strategies need to consider differences in late-stage disease detection linked to socio-demographic and geographic factors. We specifically addressed disparity in melanoma stage at diagnosis linked to residential municipality, gender and marital status within the middle- and old-age population of southern and western Sweden. Population-based registers were used to identify the melanoma c

Cortical thickness of Planum Temporale in native language tone processing

INTRODUCTION: Non-native linguistic tone learning ability has been found to be influenced by the anatomy of primary auditory regions in the left hemisphere (Wong et al., 2008). In native speakers, however, where phonemic categories are firmly established, variations in the macrostructure of more secondary auditory processing areas might be expected to affect performance. The present study investig

When are data? : Reflections on the making (possible) of research data.

Digital research data is often advanced as a trouble-free concept and used to describe the material of research at all stages in a research process. However frequently such framing lacks understanding of the roles of disciplinary and organisational cultures, and of what the various practices, including those of funding policy and university administration, involved in shaping what research data ar

Computationally Efficient Estimation of Multi-Dimensional Spectral Lines

In this work, we propose a computationally efficient algorithm for estimating multi-dimensional spectral lines. The method treats the data tensor's dimensions separately, yielding the corresponding frequency estimates for each dimension. Then, in a second step, the estimates are ordered over dimensions, thus forming the resulting multidimensional parameter estimates. For high dimensional data, the

The role of polyglucose in oxygen-dependent respiration by a new strain of Desulfovibrio salexigens

Desulfovibrio salexigens strain Mastl was isolated from the oxic/anoxic interface of a marine sediment. Growth under sulfate-reducing conditions was accompanied by polyglucose accumulation in the cell with every substrate tested. Highest polyglucose storage was found with glucose (0.8–1.0 g polyglucose (g protein)−1), but the growth rate with this substrate was very low (0.015 h−1). Anaerobically

The correlation between regulatory conditions and antibiotic consumption within the WHO European Region

Background: In a global perspective, bacterial infections are still a major cause of morbidity and mortality; therefore, effective antibiotics are needed. However, the emergence of antibiotic resistance due to irrational use has now become a serious public health problem. Hence, the objective of this study was to analyse the association of regulatory aspects with antibiotic consumption. Methods: A

Serfs and the city: market conditions, surplus extraction institutions and urban growth in Poland, 1500-1772

I investigate the relation between institutions, markets, and preindustrial economic growth. In particular, I analyze the impact of coercive agricultural class structures on urban population growth in Poland. My main point is that the impact of the demesne economy based on serfdom on urban growth was neither inherently negative nor positive. Instead, I suggest that the effect of serfdom depended o

Little Divergence revisited: Polish living standards in a European perspective, 1500-1800

I contribute to the debate on the timing of the Little Divergence within pre-industrial Europe. I add Polish real wages to the comparative framework by comparing them with the English and Italian series. I compile existing data for Poznań, Lublin, and the Polish agricultural sector. I add this information to the internationally available evidence for Cracow, Gdańsk, Warsaw, and Lviv. I demonstrate

Market conditions in preindustrial Poland, 1500-1772

In this paper I investigate commodity market integration, market efficiency and market performance in preindustrial Eastern Europe. In particular, I look at the Polish rye market between 1500 and 1772. I analyse annual rye price data from seven cities. The results suggest that market conditions in Poland in the sixteenth century were relatively favourable. The market disintegrated in the seventeen

Integration of Tumor and Host Factors – Implications for Breast Cancer Prognosis

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, although the mortality rates have decreased in the last decades. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease, and treatment resistance is a significant clinical problem in spite of the overall high survival rates. Improved screening programs, novel surgical techniques, and adjuvant treatments have contributed to the improved survival, but

Factors for Adopting ERP as SaaS amongst SMEs: The Customers vs. Vendor Point of View

This paper identifies the factors for adopting Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) delivered as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) among small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The authors conducted a two phases' qualitative-methodology: interviews with 20 experts from SaaS vendor (Microsoft) and a case-study with executives in three organizations which implemented vendor's ERP as SaaS (customers). The vend
