From manual to automatic pavement distress detection and classification

Detection and classification of distresses is a fundamental activity in the road pavement management. Even in the early stages of deterioration, road pavement needs to be monitored to identify problems, evaluating the actual conditions and predicting what the future conditions will be. Monitoring activities through manual/visual inspections are time consuming, costly and cause of safety concerns.

Low nocturnal blood pressure is associated with reduced cerebral blood flow in the cohort "Men born in 1914"

BACKGROUND: Men born in 1914 is a population-based cohort study of the epidemiology of cardiovascular and cerebral disease. Little is known about how diurnal variation in blood pressure (BP) levels influence cerebral perfusion in very elderly populations. OBJECTIVES: To study the association between systolic (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) levels, during the day and at night, expressed through 24 h a

The effect of prostate motion during hypofractionated radiotherapy can be reduced by using flattening filter free beams

Background and purpose: Hypofractionated radiotherapy of prostate cancer reduces the overall treatment time but increases the per-fraction beam-on time due to the higher fraction doses. This increased fraction treatment time results in a larger uncertainty of the prostate position. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of prostate motion during flattening filter free (FFF) Volume

The effect of climate change on Glacier No.1 at the source region of the Urumqi River, Tianshan, China

Among the layers of a plant community, the canopy has the most important hydrological function in water circulation. Understanding the canopy’s inner structure and its relationship to water transport is fundamental for the functional mechanisms of the vegetation canopy. Using an artificial rainfall simulator to supply three levels of rainfall intensity, the interception of rainfall by the canopy w

Synthesis of Reduced Graphene Oxide over CeO2 nanowires for hydrogen production from photocatalytic water decomposition

Energy deficiency is currently an emergency issue in society. Hydrogen has been considered an environment-friendly energy carrier with high energy capacity. Hence, in this study a simple and effective method was used to synthesize Cerium-oxide Nanowires doped with Reduced Graphene Oxide (CNW-RGO) via the hydrothermal reaction as hydrogen evolving catalysts. Results showed that the composite photoc

Arkivarien vid universitetsarkivet HenriLund has had its fair share of eternal students, and their names appear like shadows from an arrack punch-flavoured past: “The Last Athenian” Otto Steiman, Sam Ask, Adolf Herrlin – the list goes on. Similarly, Lund University has had many academic eccentrics, both of the kind who made a career for themselves and the kind who never even completed a degree. Here, University archivist Henrik Ullstad

Efficacy of Esomeprazole in NSAIDs Induced Gastric Ulcer: A Meta-Analysis

Background: Gastric ulcers are painful sores with discontinuity in the entire thickness of stomach lining. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are among the major classes of drugs used in treatment of gastric ulcers by inhibiting H+/K+ATPase pump thus reducing acid secretion. The prototype of PPIs is omeprazole, one of its new derivatives, esomeprazole is known to have superior activity against NSAIDs i

Emergency department visits among patients with left ventricular assist devices

Continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are increasingly implanted to support patients with end-stage heart failure. These patients are at high risk for complications, many of which necessitate emergency care. While rehospitalization rates have been described, there is little data regarding emergency department (ED) visits. We hypothesize that ED visits are frequent and often requi

A new perspective in the road asset management with the use of advanced monitoring system & BIM

The present paper reports different applications which have a common data source: Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN) of the Transport Infrastructure Laboratory of the University of Catania. Data surveyed with ARAN were used to develop performance indicators of the road asset. A BIM model makes possible to improve the flexibility in information access and to merge data with the aim to allow a complete

Safety assessment of passing relief lanes using microsimulation-based conflicts analysis

The paper target is to analyze the influence of passing lane section and merging area lengths, which represent a critical part in the geometric design of passing lanes. The lack of observed data and the still limited implementation of short passing 2 + 1 lane in Poland do not allow to perform a reliable performance-based design of their length to balance context and economical restrains with opera

SPATIAL VARIATION OF PRECIPITATION IN THE HUANG-HUAI-HAI RIVER BASIN UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE

The Huang-Huai-Hai River Basin covers the major political and socioeconomic centers of China. Thus, flood protection and economic development by sustainable water supply are important. Due to this, it is imperative to study distribution and variation of precipitation characteristics under climate change. As hydrological observations are limited, scholars have done more research on daily, monthly,

Women's experiences of internet-delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (iCBT) for Fear of Birth

Background: Fear of Birth is common in pregnant women and associated with negative physical and mental health. There is a clear comorbidity with anxiety and depression. Internet-delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy has been suggested as a treatment option for Fear of Birth and a randomized controlled trial comparing internet-delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy with midwifery led counselling as

Networked research infrastructures and their governance : The case of biobanking

Research infrastructures such as biobanks are increasingly important for science and society. This paper focuses on the transition of biobanks from being a research tool of individual research groups to complex, internationally networked research infrastructures supporting large-scale biomedical investigations, and the challenges that this change poses for governance in relation to management, fun

What do European research collaboration networks in life sciences look like?

For scientists and policy-makers it is important to understand the value of networks and collaborations for scientific quality and commercialisation of research results. The interplay between funding mechanisms and research collaborations is of particular importance in this context. We explore this interplay with an empirical analysis of international research collaborations involving EU countries
