The Vietnamese Police Response to Domestic Violence Against Women: The Family Unit Under Pressure

The traditional family unit has historically been considered a fundamental element of Vietnamese society. Despite legislation which has declared the equality of men and women, in reality, household gender roles remain fixed and often unequal, and family members are not expected to deviate from the norm. Men hold the dominant position within the household, and the belief that the husband can legiti

Urban Cemetery Animals

This presentation investigates animals’ place in the contemporary human cemetery. It will do this by looking at what types of animals that are allowed to take place in the cemetery; both above and below the ground, physically as well as symbolically. The aim is to shine light on the various ways that animals are used and experienced in the cemetery, and to explore how this both reflects our changi

Robust feature representation for classification of bird song syllables

A novel feature set for low-dimensional signal representation, designed for classification or clustering of non-stationary signals with complex variation in time and frequency, is presented. The feature representation of a signal is given by the first left and right singular vectors of its ambiguity spectrum matrix. If the ambiguity matrix is of low rank, most signal information in time direction

Simulation of microstructural evolution during repair welding of an IN718 plate

A precipitate evolution model based on classical nucleation, growth and coarsening theory is adapted and solved using the multi-class approach for the superalloy IN718. The model accounts for dissolution of precipitates and is implemented in a finite element program. The model is used to simulate precipitate evolution in the fused zone and the adjacent heat affected zone for a welding simulation.

Features of twist extrusion : Method, structures & material properties

During the last decade it has been shown that severe plastic deformation (SPD) is a very effective for obtaining ultra-fine grained (UFG) and nanostructured materials. The basic SPD methods are High Pressure Torsion (HPT) and Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE). Recently several new methods have been developed: 3D deformation, Accumulative Roll Bonding, Constrained Groove Pressing, Repetitive C

Estrogen receptor genes in gastropods : phylogenetic divergence and gene expression responses to a synthetic estrogen

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have the potential to affect development and reproduction in gastropods. However, one is today lacking basic understanding of the Molluscan endocrine system and one can therefore not fully explain these EDC-induced affects. Furthermore, only a few genes that potentially may be connected to the endocrine system have been sequenced in gastropods. An example is t

Determination of the rate of absorption for CO2 absorption systems

In order to properly design an absorption tower for CO2 capture knowledge on the absorption rate of CO2 is required. Several methods can be used to determine the absorption rate, such as a wetted wall column (WWC), stirred absorption cell or a string of discs setup. The aim of this work was to determine the absorption flux of CO2 into different amine solutions using anew method. Two absorption sys

Implications of sponge biodiversity patterns for the management of a marine reserve in northern Australia

Marine reserves are becoming progressively more important as anthropogenic impacts continue to increase, but we have little baseline information for most marine environments. In this study, we focus on the Oceanic Shoals Commonwealth Marine Reserve (CMR) in northern Australia, particularly the carbonate banks and terraces of the Sahul Shelf and Van Diemen Rise which have been designated a Key Ecol

Most patients with long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency develop pathological or subnormal retinal function

Aim: There have been few studies on long-term electroretinographic findings in patients with long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (LCHADD). This study correlated long-term electroretinographic findings with age, metabolic control and clinical symptoms. Methods: We examined 12 Swedish patients with LCHADD. Visual acuity testing, fundus examinations, optical coherence tomography and

Systematic review of risk prediction models for diabetes after bariatric surgery

Background: Diabetes remission is an important outcome after bariatric surgery. The purpose of this study was to identify risk prediction models of diabetes remission after bariatric surgery. Methods: A systematic literature review was performed in MEDLINE, MEDLINE-In-Process, Embase and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases in April 2015. All English-language full-text publ

Female mice lacking estrogen receptor-α in hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons display enhanced estrogenic response on cortical bone mass

Estrogens are important regulators of bone mass and their effects are mainly mediated via estrogen receptor(ER)α.CentralERα exertsaninhibitoryroleonbonemass.ERα ishighlyexpressedinthearcuate (ARC) and the ventromedial (VMN) nuclei in the hypothalamus. To test whether ERα in proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons, located in ARC, is involved in the regulation of bone mass, we used mice lacking ERα expr

Biodiversity at multiple trophic levels is needed for ecosystem multifunctionality

Many experiments have shown that loss of biodiversity reduces the capacity of ecosystems to provide the multiple services on which humans depend. However, experiments necessarily simplify the complexity of natural ecosystems and will normally control for other important drivers of ecosystem functioning, such as the environment or land use. In addition, existing studies typically focus on the diver

Human TRPA1 is a heat sensor displaying intrinsic U-shaped thermosensitivity

Thermosensitive Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) channels are believed to respond to either cold or heat. In the case of TRP subtype A1 (TRPA1), there seems to be a species-dependent divergence in temperature sensation as non-mammalian TRPA1 is heat-sensitive whereas mammalian TRPA1 is sensitive to cold. It has been speculated but never experimentally proven that TRPA1 and other temperature-sens
