Expanding the Protection of Migrant Children’s Rights in The Americas : Judicial Integration of Regional Human Rights Standards
This research brief proposes a critical analysis of the judicial inter-relation between international and regional human rights systems. It particularly focuses on the effective recognition of asylum-seeking children’s rights within the Inter-American system.
“I Get Fire Inside Me That Tells Me I’m Going to Defy.”: The Discursive Construction of Trans Masculinity in Cape Town, South Africa
This research extends our understanding of trans masculinity in South Africa. Drawing on in-depth interviews with seven trans masculine-identified individuals, we analyze the discourses that trans masculine individuals draw on to make sense of their experiences of gender and their embodiment and performance of masculinity. There are three key findings. First, we found that trans masculine people d
The effect of vitamin K on prothrombin time in critically ill patients: an observational registry study.
Background: Previous studies have indicated that vitamin K deficiency is common in non-bleeding critically ill patients with slightly prolonged prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR). It has never been investigated thoroughly whether the administration of vitamin K to these patients could affect their PT-INR. Therefore, the aim of this registry study was to evaluate changes in PTBackground Previous studies have indicated that vitamin K deficiency is common in non-bleeding critically ill patients with slightly prolonged prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR). Liability within corporate groups : Parent company's accountability for subsidiary human rights abuses
Multinational enterprises have outsourced production and distribution to layers of subsidiaries and contractors to expand into new markets and increase profitability. This compartmentalization of the enterprise is facilitated by company laws and has resulted in risk shifting, excessive risk taking and lack of remediation for those injured. Company laws in virtually all jurisdictions allow for corp
Disruption and institutional development : Corporate standards and practices on responsible mining
This chapter accounts for the special context of mining and discusses what “respecting” human rights means in the mining industry. The aim of the chapter is to clarify the relationship between social investments and respect for human rights in a context characterised by the disruption mining operations cause and weaker local capacities to cope with mining. Three questions are raised herein: Are so
Corporate transparency regulations: a hollow victory?
The article examines reporting laws to determine if and how these laws shape corporate conduct and protect human rights. Since 2010 a wave of laws with extraterritorial effects has appeared as home states of multinationals began to mandate social disclosures. However, opinions as to their importance differ and some wonder whether these transparency laws are ‘a hollow victory’. What is the evidence

Internal Displacement in the Context of Disasters and Climate Change in Asia Pacific : A Human Rights-Based Approach
Research and Innovation Uptake Landscape in Rwanda: Analysis of the STI Framework
The use of scientific knowledge for society development requires enabling frameworks that allow the connection between knowledge production and use. STI policies and institutional arrangement are seen as a point of departure for such enabling frameworks. However, there is a need for understanding how individual countries are addressing the STI policies and institutional related issues as a means f
Comparing the effect of Cu-based fungicides and pure Cu salts on microbial biomass, microbial community structure and bacterial community tolerance to Cu
The effect of Cu on three different microbial endpoints was studied using different Cu sources, in order to check the usefulness of pure Cu salts to estimate the toxicity of commercial Cu fungicides on soil microbes. Cu additions caused similar dose-response curves of substrate induced respiration (SIR) decreases regardless of Cu source, i.e. the use of pure Cu salts to estimate the effect of Cu f
Value creation and appropriation in economic, social, and environmental domains : Recognizing and resolving the institutionalized asymmetries
Value creation and appropriation are much-studied processes in business and management fields. However, both academia and business practice have traditionally focused on how value is created and appropriated in the economic context and by economic actors. This overemphasis on economic logic has created institutionalized asymmetries in managing the relationship between business, society and ecologi
Correction of pathology in mice displaying Gaucher disease type 1 by a clinically-applicable lentiviral vector
This study evaluates a clinically applicable lentiviral vector for treatment of Gaucher disease type 1. Hematopoietic stem cells transduced with the vector and transplanted into a mouse model successfully halted or reversed pathology. These data were used as proof-of-concept for regulatory filing enabling the commencement of an international phase 1/2 clinical trial.
Climate resilient interconnected infrastructure : Co-optimization of energy systems and urban morphology
Co-optimization of urban morphology and distributed energy systems is key to curb energy consumption and optimally exploit renewable energy in cities. Currently available optimization techniques focus on either buildings or energy systems, mostly neglecting the impact of their interactions, which limits the renewable energy integration and robustness of the energy infrastructure; particularly in e
A Swedish register-based study exploring primary postpartum hemorrhage in 405 936 full term vaginal births between 2005 and 2015
Objective: To explore diagnoses of postpartum haemorrhage following vaginal birth, in relation to socio-demographic and obstetrical data from women who gave birth at term, in Sweden, during the years 2005–2015. Study design: A register-based cohort study was carried out, describing and comparing socio-demographic variables, obstetric variables and infant variables in 52 367 cases of diagnosed post
Analysis, modeling and simulations of an innovative sliding vane rotary compressor with a rotating cylinder
A novel sliding vane rotary compressor with a rotating cylinder is proposed in this paper. The sliding vane dynamics analysis reveals that, compared with the traditional compressor, the friction loss at the sliding vane tips and between rotor and cylinder can be reduced to 0.25% and 10.23%. To numerically investigate the internal flow mechanism, a reliable three-dimensional simulation method is de
A carbohydrate-restricted diet for patients with irritable bowel syndrome lowers serum C-peptide, insulin, and leptin without any correlation with symptom reduction
Alterations in gut endocrine cells and hormone levels have been measured in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The hypothesis of the present study was that hormone levels would change after 4 weeks of a starch- and sucrose-reduced diet (SSRD) intervention corresponding to decreased carbohydrate intake and symptoms. Among 105 IBS patients from primary and tertiary healthcare, 80 were ran
Expression, purification and characterisation of large quantities of recombinant human IAPP for mechanistic studies
Malfunction and amyloid formation of the Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP) are factors contributing to Type 2 diabetes. Unravelling the mechanism of IAPP aggregate formation may forward our understanding of this process and its effect on pancreatic β-islet cell. Such mechanistic studies require access to sequence homogeneous and highly pure IAPP. Here we present a new facile protocol for the produc
Hydraulic and heat transfer characteristics in structured packed beds with methane steam reforming reaction for energy storage
Packed beds with methane steam reforming reaction (MSR) can be used as thermochemical storage devices. The packing configuration can have a significant effect on the flow distribution which will further influence the heat/mass transfer, dispersion and reaction characteristics. In the present paper, the hydraulic, dispersion, heat/mass transfer and the MSR reaction properties are investigated in pa
Do instabilities in high-multiplicity systems explain the existence of close-in white dwarf planets?
We investigate the origin of close-in planets and related phenomena orbiting white dwarfs (WDs), which are thought to originate from orbits more distant from the star. We use the planetary architectures of the 75 multiple-planet systems (four, five, and six planets) detected orbiting main-sequence stars to build 750 dynamically analogous templates that we evolve to the WD phase. Our exploration of
