Small scale experiments and theoretical aspects of flame extinguishment with water mist

The present study focuses on extinction of flames with water mist where surface cooling effects are neglected i.e. water mist as a total flooding system where the direct spray cannot reach and cool all burning items in the protected volume. The study includes a survey of the production and properties of water mist such as different types of nozzles and means to describe droplet size distribution.

Occupants ' responses and use of different type of lighting controls: Design and validation of an instrument for measuring human perception of lighting control devices

This paper is a part of a research project studying human interaction with lighting control devices in public indoor environments. Factors such as the perception of the environment or objects may guide human behavior, therefore the perception of lighting related objects may have an impact on the behavior toward energy saving. This paper reports the development of a questionnaire for measuring huma

A variable-rate Viterbi decoder in 130-nm CMOS: design, measurements, and cost of flexibility

This paper discusses design and measurements of a flexible Viterbi decoder fabricated in 130-nm digital CMOS. Flexibility was incorporated by providing various code rates and modulation schemes to adjust to varying channel conditions. Based on previous trade-off studies, flexible building blocks were carefully designed to cause as little area penalty as possible. The chip runs down to a minimal co

Situated research and design for everyday life

This paper presents examples of different aspects of design in a disability context with the aim of revealing some of its fundamentals. It particularly emphasizes situated aspects of research: the need for being there, with the users in their daily lives – where the action is.

Low-Complexity MMSE Combining for Linear Impulse Radio UWB Receivers

Due to the fine delay resolution of typical ultra wideband (UWB) systems, Rake receivers need to combine samples from a large number of multipath components (MPCs) in order to collect sufficient signal energy for reliable decisions. In addition, these samples need to be combined optimally in order to minimize bit error probability. The optimal linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) combining sche
