Different effect on axonal outgrowth of application of nonabsorbable or absorbable tubes around a nerve repair

We studied regeneration distance of rat sciatic nerve, with the sensory pinch reflex test and immunocytochemical staining for neurofilaments, four to 21 days after transsection, repair, and enclosure of the repair site in either a non-absorbable silicone tube or an absorbable polyglycolic acid (PGA) tube. The size of both tube-types was carefully selected so that they did not compress the repaired

Studies in Romance Bilingual Acquisition : Age of Onset and Development of French and Spanish

This volume of PERLES brings together two studies on bilingual acquisition of Romance languages. Both studies focus in different ways on the age of onset as a factor for development and subsequent mastery of a second language. In the past, the age of onset or the age factor has been studied from a variety of perspectives and often in connection with the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH) (for a rece

Linear codes in generalized construction of resilient functions with very high nonlinearity

In this paper, we provide a new generalized construction method for highly nonlinear t-resilient functions, F: F-2(n) --> F-2(m). The construction is based on the use of linear error-correcting codes together with highly nonlinear multiple output functions. Given a linear [u, m, t + 1] code we show that it is possible to construct n-variable, m-output, t-resilient functions with very high nonlinea

Adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease feel ambivalent towards their parents' concern for them

This is a grounded theory study to identify concepts for describing how adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) respond to their parents' concern for them. Ten adolescent boys and seven girls were interviewed. In the analysis four main categories emerged: ambivalence, ability/inability, compliance/resistance and trust/distrust. We found ambivalence to be the most distinctive theme to app

Insulin sensitivity in adults with growth hormone deficiency and effect of growth hormone treatment.

Adult growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a multifactorial disorder in which pituitary dysfunction associated with pituitary adenomas or their treatment plays a major role. The introduction of recombinant growth hormone (GH) for the treatment of GHD has opened up new treatment avenues but has also raised concerns about possible untoward long-term metabolic effects of GH, such as the potential effec

De material som redThis dissertation is about the goals that existed for Swedish essay writing in grammar schools from the start of the nineteenth century to the 1960s. The point of departure is the contrast between the negative image often painted of this essay writing and the positive picture painted of writing tuition before this period (classical rhetoric) and after it (process-oriented writing with the emphasis

Folding of a small helical protein using hydrogen bonds and hydrophobicity forces.

A reduced protein model with five to six atoms per amino acid and five amino acid types is developed and tested on a three-helix-bundle protein, a 46-amino acid fragment from staphylococcal protein A. The model does not rely on the widely used Go approximation, which ignores non-native interactions. We find that the collapse transition is considerably more abrupt for the protein A sequence than fo

"Det var kunskap jag behövde" : studiecirklar och politisk kultur

Studiecirklar har haft en stor betydelse för arbetarrörelsen, liksom för många andra folkrörelser, under 1900-talet. De var viktiga verktyg för att kunna vara samhällsengagerad och vara med och ta ansvar för det man ansåg vara av ett gemensamt intresse. Att vara med och ta ett ansvar för det gemensamt angelägna och besätta politiska poster runt om i kommunerna krävde kunskap om den kommunala verks

New loci regulating rat myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an inflammatory disease in rats that closely mimics many clinical and histopathological aspects of multiple sclerosis. Non-MHC quantitative trait loci regulating myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-induced EAE have previously been identified in the EAE-permissive strain, DA, on rat chromosomes 4,10,15, a

Rapid and efficient clearance of airway tissue granulocytes through transepithelial migration.

Background: Clearance of tissue granulocytes is central to the resolution of airway inflammation. To date the focus has been on apoptotic mechanisms of cell removal and little attention has been given to alternative processes. The present study explores transepithelial migration as a mechanism of cell clearance. Method: Guinea pig tracheobronchial airways where eosinophils are constitutively pres

Tracheal remodeling: comparison of different composite cultures consisting of human respiratory epithelial cells and human chondrocytes

The reconstruction of extensive tracheal defects is still an unsolved challenge for thoracic surgery. Tissue engineering is a promising possibility to solve this problem through the generation of an autologous tracheal replacement from patients' own tissue. Therefore, this study investigated the potential of three different coculture systems, combining human respiratory epithelial cells and human

Participating in a Story: Exploring Audience Cognition

Stories that the audience can influence (such as computer games and other interactive multimedia), in contrast to 'traditional' stories (such as books and cinema), present a challenge to fields which take narrative (story) as their study object. What is the difference between these two kinds of stories? Earlier theories have focused on differences in media, structure, or the audience's physical ac
