Role and significance of plasma citrulline in the early phase after small bowel transplantation in pigs

A reliable serological marker of acute cellular rejection (ACR) after small bowel transplantation (SBTx) is still missing. Plasma citrulline level (PCL) reflects the functional integrity of intestinal mucosa which is partially lost during ACR. The aim of our study was to investigate the role of PCL as marker of ACR after SBTx. Eighteen German landrace pigs were used and divided into three groups.

Large Variation in Adherence to Diagnostic Guidelines in Hypertension Management in Swedish Primary Healthcare

High blood pressure (BP) is a frequent cause for visits to primary healthcare centers (PHCCs) in Sweden. Guidelines on methods for BP measurements for diagnosis of hypertension have recently been updated. We aimed to study adherence to diagnostic guidelines in hypertension management and evaluate whether adherence to guidelines was related to organizational or sociodemographic characteristics. Int

In this bachelor thesis, I examine how professional translators handle the Danish discourse particles da, nok, and sgu in translations of Danish fiction texts into Swedish. Of particular interest is how the omission of these discourse particles affects the stylistic character of the text and what implications this has for the reader's experience of the target text. My corpus consists of four D

Linguistic development is an inherent and dynamic characteristic of all living languages, whereby new words and expressions emerge in response to societal changes, while existing lexical elements either disappear or shift in meaning. A significant driving force in this process is lexical borrowing, which serves to fill lexical gaps when the target language lacks terms for new concepts. This th

Behind The Mask: Gender, Neurodiversity and the Hidden Struggles of Adult Women with ADHD

This thesis investigates the lived experiences of women with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), diagnosed in adulthood in Denmark, focusing on how culturally ingrained norms and diagnostic frameworks contribute to masking behaviours, delayed recognition and systemic exclusion. The reason behind this thesis is a persistent underdiagnosis of ADHD in women and the subsequent resultant n

‘It was wonderful, but it is very hard to create a city’: Spatial Practice in Political Organising: Palestinagård as a Site of Counter-Hegemonic Struggle at Lund University

A year after the establishment of the protest camp Palestinagård at Lund’s University in May 2024 and its demolishment by the authorities, the student solidarity movement is continuously engaged in endeavours to get into conversations with the institutions at Lunds University to make their demands heard, as the genocide on the Palestinian population in Gaza is still ongoing. Further, Palestinagård

Compstatin : a C3-targeted complement inhibitor reaching its prime for bedside intervention

There is a growing awareness that complement plays an integral role in human physiology and disease, transcending its traditional perception as an accessory system for pathogen clearance and opsonic cell killing. As the list of pathologies linked to dysregulated complement activation grows longer, it has become clear that targeted modulation of this innate immune system opens new windows of therap

Survivin is upregulated during liver regeneration in rats and humans and is associated with hepatocyte proliferation

BACKGROUND: Survivin regulates cell division and inhibits apoptosis. Liver regeneration is a complex process involving both proliferation and apoptosis. The role of survivin is not well elucidated and no data exist in humans.METHODS: Seventy per cent liver resection was used to investigate liver regeneration in rats. Survivin was identified by means of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reacti

VEGF is important for early liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to determine the role of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) on the microvasculature and on angiogenetic gene expression after partial hepatectomy (PH) in the rat model.METHODS: To determine the effect of exogenous and endogenous VEGF after PH, rats were subjected to 70% PH and treated either with VEGF, anti-VEGF or NaCl. Postoperatively (3-168 h), vessel

Terlipressin and gelafundin : safe therapy of hepatorenal syndrome

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) occurs in about 20 % of patients with liver cirrhosis and ascites and is characterized by intensive renal vasoconstriction, low glomerular filtration rate but preserved tubular function and normal renal histology. The potential of terlipressin and albumin to reverse HRS after a time period of 14 days has already been shown. However, intravenous albumi

Safety profile after prolonged C3 inhibition

The central component of the complement cascade, C3, is involved in various biological functions, including opsonization of foreign bodies, clearance of waste material, activation of immune cells, and triggering of pathways controlling development. Given its broad role in immune responses, particularly in phagocytosis and the clearance of microbes, a deficiency in complement C3 in humans is often

Complement Interception Across Humoral Incompatibility in Solid Organ Transplantation : A Clinical Perspective

The humoral barrier in transplant biology is the result of preformed donor-specific antibodies (DSAs), directed either against human leukocyte antigens (HLA) or non-HLA antigens such as blood group (ABO) molecules. The term "sensitization" applies to patients carrying these antibodies. Transplantation is widely accepted as a life-saving opportunity for patients with terminal end-organ disease. How

How do non-differentiating bacteria adapt to starvation?

Non-differentiating bacteria adapt to starvation induced growth arrest by a complex turn-on/turn-off pattern of protein synthesis. This response shows distinct similarities with those of spore formation in differentiating organisms. A substantial amount of information on the non-growth biology of non-differentiating bacteria can be derived from studies on Vibrio strains. One important result is th

Perceived realism in virtual reality experiments for human behaviour research

Virtual reality can be a useful research tool to investigate how people behave in different fire situations. For the results from such experiments to have good validity, i.e., to represent behaviours that can occur in a real environment, the VR environment must be perceived as a good substitute for the real environment. The project focuses on how to achieve such high-quality VR environments. Two d

Omission of postoperative radiotherapy after breast-conserving surgery in low-risk breast cancer

Background This prospective cohort study aimed to assess whether postoperative radiotherapy could safely be omitted in women aged 65 years and older with low-risk, estrogen receptor-positive T1N0 breast cancer treated with breast-conserving surgery and adjuvant endocrine therapy. Methods Eligible patients were women aged 65 years and older with unifocal, nonlobular, grade 1 or 2, estrogen receptor

Cell division genes ftsQAZ in escherichia coli require distant cis- acting signals upstream of ddlB for full expression

A transcriptional reporter fusion has been introduced into the chromosomal ftsZ locus in such a way that all transcription that normally reaches ftsZ can be monitored. The new Φ(ftsZ-lacZ) fusion yields four times more β-galactosidase activity than a ddlB-ftsQAZ-lacZ fusion on a lambda prophage vector. A strongly polar ddlB::Ω insertion prevents contributions from signals upstream of the ftsQAZ pr
