Ontogenetic scaling of fish metabolism in the mouse-to-elephant mass magnitude range
Intraspecific or ontogenetic analyses of mass-metabolism relationships do not often conform to the same allometric correlations as those seen in interspecific analyses. A commonly cited reason for this discrepancy is that ontogenetic studies examine smaller mass ranges than interspecific studies, and are therefore not statistically comparable. In this study the metabolic rate of yellowtail kingfis
Oligosaccharides from faeces of a blood-group B, breast-fed infant
Eight oligosaccharides have been isolated from faeces of a blood group B, secretor, breast-fed infant and characterized by sugar and methylation analysis, f.a.b. mass spectrometry and 1H-n.m.r. spectroscopy. One of these oligosaccharides has not previously been reported and is a tri-L-fucosyl derivative of lacto-N-hexaose. The other compounds were identical to oligosaccharides found in human milk.

A thoracic chimney graft is a stent or stent graft that is deployed in a supraaortic branch vessel, protruding somewhat proximally into the free aortic lumen like a chimney parallel to the main aortic stent graft. The chimney graft is used to preserve flow to vital aortic side branches covered by the main aortic stent graft. Standard off-the-shelf stent grafts can be used to instantly treat lesion
Low-dose midazolam antagonizes cerebral metabolic stimulation by ketamine in the pig
In order to test the hypothesis that low-dose midazolam reduces excitatory cerebral symptoms by attenuating ketamine-induced increases in the cerebral metabolic rate for oxygen (CMRO2), we compared the cerebral effects of a combination of an anesthetic dose of ketamine hydrochloride (10.0 mg.kg-1 i.v.) and a subanaesthetic dose of midazolam maleate (0.25 mg.kg-1 i.v., n = 6; or 0.10 mg.kg-1 i.v.,
Poly(acrylamide-allyl glycidyl ether) cryogel as a novel stationary phase in dye-affinity chromatography
Poly(acrylamide-allyl glycidyl ether) [poly(AAm-AGE)] cryogel was prepared by bulk polymerization which proceeds in an aqueous solution of monomers frozen inside a glass column (cryo-polymerization). After thawing, the monolithic cryogel contains a continuous polymeric matrix having interconnected pores of 10-100 mu m size. Cibacron Blue F3GA was immobilized by covalent binding onto poly(AAm-AGE)
The prognostic impact of karyotypic subgroups in myelodysplastic syndromes is strongly modified by sex
The prognostic impact of karyotypic patterns in a consecutive series of 389 adult myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) was investigated. Time period did not significantly influence the survival times. In the analyses, the MDS cases were subdivided into the cytogenetic subgroups used in the International Prognostic Scoring System, i.e. favourable [-Y, del(5q) or del(20q) as single aberrations or normal
Synthesis and biological evaluation of paclitaxel-thiocoichicine hybrids
The bifunctional taxoid-colchicinoid hybrids 6-8 were synthesized and evaluated in assays of cytotoxicity and tubulin assembly/disassembly. All compounds showed a high degree of cytotoxicity, but, while 6 and 7 behaved as bifunctional tubulin binders not unlike an equimolecular mixture of taxol and thiocolchicine, 8 was surprisingly devoid of tubulin activity, acting on a distinct and yet to ident
International use of health status questionnaires in Parkinson's disease: translation is not enough.
The present study assessed the linguistic and content validity of the Swedish version of the 39-item Parkinson's disease questionnaire (PDQ-39). The frame question, response alternatives and two of the 39 items yielded substantial linguistic and stylistic problems. Such shortcomings would be expected to influence responses to, and the quality of, the whole questionnaire. Data support content valid
Emerging academic responsibilities and opportunities for promoting regional sustainability
Academics have had numerous responsibilities during the centuries. However, now with global climate changes and the attendant, looming crises, it is increasingly crucial that administrators, faculty members, graduate, undergraduate students, staff members and alumni work together with governmental.. non-governmental and industrial members in envisioning, societies that are truly sustainable. The v
Gaseous mercury distribution in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere observed onboard the CARIBIC passenger aircraft
Total gaseous mercury (TGM) was measured onboard a passenger aircraft during monthly CARIBIC flights (Civil Aircraft for Regular Investigation of the Atmosphere Based on an Instrumented Container) made between May 2005 and March 2007 on the routes Frankfurt-Sao Paulo-Santiago de Chile and back and Frankfurt-Guangzhou-Manila and back. The data provide for the first time an insight into the seasonal
A regulator for continuous sedimentation in ideal clarifier–thickener units
The purpose of this paper is to present a regulator for control of the continuous-sedimentation process in a clarifier–thickener unit when this is modelled in one space dimension and when the settling properties of the solids obey Kynch’s assumption. The model is a scalar hyperbolic conservation law with space-discontinuous flux function and point source. The most desired type of solution contains
Rhetoric in film: a cultural semiotical study of Greta Garbo in "Ninotchka".
The essay shows how the interplay between Garbo's off screen and on screen personas were used in the making of "Ninotchka" (1939), and how the film, directed by Ernst Lubitsch, connected to contemporary social and cultural norms focusing on the understanding of gender types.
Laser based diagnostics - From cultural heritage to human health
An overview of applied laser-based diagnostics as pursued at the Division of Atomic Physics, Lund University, is given. The fields of application range from environmental monitoring including cultural heritage assessment, to biomedical applications. General aspects of laser-based methods are non-intrusiveness, high spectral- and spatial resolution, and data production in real-time. Different appli
Incidence of malignant tumours in relatives of BRCA1 and BRCA2 germline mutation carriers
We investigated cancer incidence between 1958 and 1995 in 1873 individuals belonging to 29 consecutively identified BRCA1 and 20 BRCA2 associated families from Southern Sweden using data from parish and local tax authorities, as well as the Swedish Cancer Registry, Cause of Death Registry and Census Registry. 150 malignant tumours were analysed from 1145 relatives in the BRCA1 families and 87 tumo
Contradictions and Confusions in Development Work: Exploring the Realities of Bangladeshi NGOs
Ambiguous practices and identities of NGOs have become a source of increasing concern for all involved in development intervention. But apart from pointing at dishonest marketing and unfortunate unintended consequences of donors’ support, how can we understand these ambiguities? Based on an ethnographic study of local Bangladeshi NGOs, the article explores actions and behaviour of grassroots NGO s
Comparative study of the short-term effects of a novel selective estrogen receptor modulator, ospemifene, and raloxifene and tamoxifen on rat uterus
To investigate the differential short-term effects of selective estrogen receptor (ER) modulators (SERMs) on uterus, we treated adult ovariectomized rats with a novel SERM, ospemifene (Osp), two previously established SERMs (tamoxifen and raloxifene (Ral)) and estradiol. The expression of two estrogen-regulated early response genes c-fos and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and DNA synth
Municipal pricing of water considering that water is both an economic and a social good - A pricing reform with implications for Romania
One of the basic principles in the European policy to cope with the growing challenge of water scarcity is that water demand management should be considered before opting for additional water infrastructure. Die implication of this is that water must be treated as an economic good, which means that the "user's pays' principle" has to be implemented, At the same time there is much political consens
Investigation and analysis of ferrous sulfate polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel dosimeter
Ferrous sulfate (Fe(SO4)2) PVA gels were investigated for a range of absorbed doses up to 20 Gy using both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectrophotometry to determine R1 and optical density (OD) dose responses and G values. It was found that R1- and OD-dose sensitivities increased with O2 saturation or by the introduction of a freeze-thaw cycle during preparation of the PVA gel. The storag
