Female pig urethral tone is dependent on Rho guanosine triphosphatases and Rho-associated kinase.

PURPOSE: Circular smooth muscle of the urethra generates spontaneous myogenic tone of relevance for the maintenance of continence. We tested if Rho guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases) and Rho-associated kinase (ROK) are involved in the generation of urethral tone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Small circular strips of female pig urethra were dissected out and mounted for recording isometric force. The ef

The effect of intranasal budesonide spray on mucosal blood flow measured with laser Doppler flowmetry

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have shown that, although rare, findings of mucosal ulcers and perforations of the nasal septum in some cases may be associated with the use of topical nasal glucocorticosteroids (GCS). It can been speculated that, a reduction in septal mucosal blood flow causing ischemia may eventually induce septal perforations. AIM: To evaluate whether a single dose of a potent nasal

Limitations of Water Mist as a Total Flooding Agent

The limitations of water mist in acting as a total flooding agent are discussed in this paper. The paper focuses on water mist consisting of droplets 1-100 µm in diameter. Water mists are very efficient as an extinguishing media if they are present in the flame. There are, however, several problems associated with introducing the water mist into the flame: the spray reaches only a short distance;

In this dissertation attenention is drawn towards the field of tension that prevails between pedagogical action, which can be descibed in terms of strategic processes and communicative pedagogical action. While the former places the preconditions for effective knowledge development of the individual at the ce

Essays on Nonlinear Pricing and Welfare

Till exempel är det ofta nödvändigt med icke-lineära priser för att uppnåThe price of a good is said to be nonlinear if the unit price not is constant but depends on some aspect of the quantity (or quality) purchased. This form of pricing is commonly used in many industries, e.g. the electricity and water industries, and has many desirable properties. For example, nonlinear pricing is often necessary for (Pareto) efficiency and nonlinear pricing can be used as an instr

A Swedish translation and validation of the Disgust Scale: A measure of disgust sensitivity

The psychometric properties of a Swedish version of Haidt, McCauley and Rozin's (1994) Disgust Scale were studied. Confirmatory factor analysis of the original model with eight factors (food, animals, body products, sex, body envelope violations, death, hygiene, and magic) provided satisfactory fit to the data (N= 280), significantly better than to the alternative one-factor and five-factor models

Loss of heterozygosity at BRCA2 in a ductal carcinoma in situ and three invasive breast carcinomas in a family with a germline BRCA2 mutation

We have examined a family with a germline BRCA2 mutation in three cases of invasive breast cancer and one case of ductal carcinoma in situ ( DCIS). Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) has been demonstrated at the BRCA2 locus in all cases. This result may suggest that the germline mutation in BRCA2 is the initiating step of DCIS and support the theory that DCIS is a precursor of invasive breast carcinoma

Multi-component carbon isotope evidence of early Holocene environmental change and carbon-flow pathways from a hard-water lake in northern Sweden

A 9000-year carbonate-rich sediment sequence from a small hard-water lake in northernmost Sweden was studied by means of multi-component stable carbon isotope analysis. Radiocarbon dating of different sediment fractions provides chronologic control and reveals a rather constant hard-water effect through time, suggesting lake has remained hydrologically open throughout the Holocene. Successive depl

Different effects of salmeterol, formoterol and salbutamol on cholinergic responses in the ferret trachea

1 In the present study, the inhibitory effects of the selective beta 2-adrenoceptor agonists, salmeterol, formoterol and salbutamol, have been investigated on contractions of ferret trachea induced both by endogenous and exogenous acetylcholine. The aim of the study was to evaluate quantitative and/or qualitative differences in response which may indicate both pre-and post-junctional sites of acti

Periarticular bone in rheumatoid arthritis versus arthrosis. Histomorphometry in 103 hip biopsies

Histomorphologic differences of the periarticular bone in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthrosis (OA) may be of importance for long-term prosthetic fixation. We have evaluated bone specimens, obtained during total hip replacement from an acetabular and a femoral biopsy site, in 42 RA-hips and 61 OA-hips. In both groups the bone turnover was increased in the acetabulum compared to that in the

Plasma bikunin: half-life and tissue uptake

Bikunin is a chondroitin sulfate-containing plasma protein synthesized in the liver. In vitro, it has been shown to inhibit proteases and to have additional activities, but its biological function is still unclear. Here we have studied the dynamics of plasma bikunin in rats and mice. A half-life of 7 +/- 2 min was obtained from the time course of the decrease of the plasma level of bikunin followi
