The mobility of packaged phage genome controls ejection dynamics

The cell decision between lytic and lysogenic infection is strongly influenced by dynamics of DNA injection into a cell from a phage population, as phages compete for limited resources and progeny. However, what controls the timing of viral DNA ejection events was not understood. This in vitro study reveals that DNA ejection dynamics for phages can be synchronized (occurring within seconds) or des

The Pathogenic Involvement of Neutrophils in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and Transfusion-Related Acute Lung Injury

The acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a serious and common complication of multiple medical and surgical interventions, with sepsis, pneumonia, and aspiration of gastric contents being common risk factors. ARDS develops within 1 week of a known clinical insult or presents with new/worsening respiratory symptoms if the clinical insult is unknown. Approximately 40% of the ARDS cases have

Current indications for surgical treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism in the elderly

This study presents the results of surgery in the elderly for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) from a single institution's experience. We retrospectively analyzed 898 cases of surgically treated PHPT, divided into two groups: 135 elderly patients (A) and 763 patients younger than 65 years (B). PHPT was symptomatic in 68.8 per cent patients in group A and in 81.6 per cent in group B. Unilateral t

Impact of Age-appropriate Preparations for Children With Cancer Undergoing Radiotherapy on Parents and Family Functioning, Parents' Anxiety and Hospital Costs – A Feasibility Study

Purpose: The aim was to evaluate the impact of age-appropriate information and preparation procedures for children with cancer undergoing radiotherapy on 1) parents and family functioning, parents' anxiety and 2) hospital costs compared to traditional care. Design and Methods: An un-matched quasi-experimental controlled clinical trial was conducted consisting of a control group including 31 parent

The genetic diversity, morphology, biogeography, and taxonomic designations of Ammonia (Foraminifera) in the Northeast Atlantic

The genetic diversity, morphology and biogeography of Ammonia specimens was investigated across the Northeast (NE) Atlantic margins, to enhance the regional (palaeo)ecological studies based on this genus. Living specimens were collected from 22 sampling locations ranging from Shetland to Portugal to determine the distribution of Ammonia genetic types across the NE Atlantic shelf biomes. We success

Role of forest regrowth in global carbon sink dynamics

Although the existence of a large carbon sink in terrestrial ecosystems is well-established, the drivers of this sink remain uncertain. It has been suggested that perturbations to forest demography caused by past land-use change, management, and natural disturbances may be causing a large component of current carbon uptake. Here we use a global compilation of forest age observations, combined wit

Assessment of the Food-Swallowing Process Using Bolus Visualisation and Manometry Simultaneously in a Device that Models Human Swallowing

The characteristics of the flows of boluses with different consistencies, i.e. different rheological properties, through the pharynx have not been fully elucidated. The results obtained using a novel in vitro device, the Gothenburg Throat, which allows simultaneous bolus flow visualisation and manometry assessments in the pharynx geometry, are presented, to explain the dependence of bolus flow on

TCF4 (E2-2) harbors tumor suppressive functions in SHH medulloblastoma

The TCF4 gene encodes for the basic helix–loop–helix transcription factor 4 (TCF4), which plays an important role in the development of the central nervous system (CNS). Haploinsufficiency of TCF4 was found to cause Pitt-Hopkins syndrome (PTHS), a severe neurodevelopmental disorder. Recently, the screening of a large cohort of medulloblastoma (MB), a highly aggressive embryonal brain tumor, reveal

Freedom or Love? : Marriage, Single Life, and the Road to Happiness in Swedish 1920s Magazines

This article analyses discourses about self-supporting women in Swedish women’s magazines in the 1920s, after the attainment of legal equality in marriage and the acquisition of the right to vote. The self-supporting middle class woman was a controversial figure in this context. On the one hand symbolizing freedom and independence, she was on the other hand ridiculed and labelled mannish and unatt

Synaptic vesicle protein 2A as a potential biomarker in synaptopathies

Measuring synaptic density in vivo using positron emission tomography (PET) imaging-based biomarkers targeting the synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) has received much attention recently due to its potential research and clinical applications in synaptopathies, including neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases. Fluid-based biomarkers in proteinopathies have previously been suggested to provide

Towards meaningful youth participation in science-policy processes : A case study of the Youth in Landscapes Initiative

In the context of complex intergenerational challenges such as climate change and sustainable development, it is increasingly important for scientists and policy-makers to actively engage with and support the meaningful participation of youth in policy and decision-making. This research evaluates the effectiveness and impact of the Youth in Landscapes Initiative in supporting the active participat

Impact of gender on echocardiographic characteristics in heart transplant recipients

Aims: Assessment following heart transplantation (HTx) is routinely performed using transthoracic echocardiography. Differences in long-term mortality following HTx related to donor-recipient matching have been reported, but effects of gender on cardiac size and function are not well studied. The aims of this study were to evaluate differences in echocardiographic characteristics of HTx recipients

A recommender geoportal for geospatial resource discovery and recommendation

Geoportals have been widely implemented by national spatial data infrastructures (NSDI) to provide users with the ability to search for geospatial resources over the Internet. This paper proposes an approach that can improve the functionalities of the conventional geoportals by adding recommendation capabilities to the execution mechanisms of geoportals. The geoportals with recommendation capabili

Predictive mapping of urban air pollution using apache spark on a hadoop cluster

Air pollution is one of the major environmental problems in the industrial and populated cities. Predictive mapping of urban air pollution and sharing the generated maps with the public and city officials have positive impacts on society and environment. This article presents a solution based on distributed processing concepts to generate predictive map of air pollution for the next 24 hours. Apac

Mapping European ecosystem change types in response to land-use change, extreme climate events, and land degradation

Extreme climate events and nonsustainable land use are important drivers altering the functioning of European ecosystems, resulting in loss of the services provided. Yet a consensus method for regular continental scale assessment of ecosystem condition in relation to land degradation (LD) is still lacking. Here, we propose a new remote sensing-based approach allowing for improved, repeated assessm

A polynomial formulation of adaptive strong stability preserving multistep methods

A new formulation of explicit multistep methods allows variable step-sizes by construction. This formulation can be used to construct time-adaptive strong stability preserving (SSP) multistep methods of any order for the solution of time-dependent PDEs. The new formulation is implemented in a MATLAB package, and some numerical examples are presented.
