Induction of Autophagy by Cystatin C: A Mechanism That Protects Murine Primary Cortical Neurons and Neuronal Cell Lines

Cystatin C (CysC) expression in the brain is elevated in human patients with epilepsy, in animal models of neurodegenerative conditions, and in response to injury, but whether up-regulated CysC expression is a manifestation of neurodegeneration or a cellular repair response is not understood. This study demonstrates that human CysC is neuroprotective in cultures exposed to cytotoxic challenges, in

Exciton-vibrational coupling in molecular aggregates: Electronic versus vibronic dimer

The influence of exciton-vibrational coupling on the energy level structure, oscillator strength, and relaxation dynamics is investigated for two different excitonic dimer models. As compared with a purely electronic dimer, the inclusion of local vibrational modes within a vibronic dimer gives rise to a complex energy level structure including avoided crossings and changes of the nature of the exc

Sleep quality, use of hypnotics and sleeping habits in different age-groups among older people

Background: Sleep disturbances are common among older people (>65 years). Further, long-term use of sedative-hypnotics in older people is associated with morbidity and mortality. However, older people represent a large span of life years, and few studies have included the oldest-old above 85 years. Aim: To investigate and compare sleep quality, use of hypnotics and sleeping habits in different age

Attitudes and beliefs about national guidelines for schizophrenia. A study among stakeholders.

Popular Abstract in Swedish Intresset för evidens-baserad vård växer snabbt men trots att nya forskningsresultat produceras och publiceras löpande, tar det lång tid innan de får genomslag i den vård som erbjuds patienter och brukare. Det finns beräkningar som talar för att det tar mellan åtta och trettio år innan tillgängliga forskningsresultat har blivit implementerade och börjat användas rutinmäThe aim of this thesis was to investigate and synthesise the knowledge base concerning leadership and its influence on the implementation of evidence-based practice. A further aim was to investigate attitudes and beliefs among politicians, healthcare managers and mental healthcare professionals about the Swedish national guidelines for schizophrenia or schizophrenia-like conditions. Data was colle

Risks in the chemotherapy process and possibilities for improvement

Medications are of considerable help if healthcare providers are able to administer them to patients safely and appropriately. The medication use process is complex and a team of professionals – doctors, nurses, and pharmacists – work together with the patient for optimal treatment effect. The process involves many sub-processes and in every step there is a possibility for an error. Cytotoxic drug

Thermally Activated Exciton Dissociation and Recombination Control the Carrier Dynamics in Organometal Halide Perovskite

Solar cells based on organometal halide perovskites have seen rapidly increasing efficiencies, now exceeding 15%. Despite this progress, there is still limited knowledge on the fundamental photophysics. Here we use microwave photoconductance and photoluminescence measurements to investigate the temperature dependence of the carrier generation, mobility, and recombination in (CH3NH3)PbI3. At temper

Employee Self-rated Productivity and Objective Organizational Production Levels Effects of Worksite Health Interventions Involving Reduced Work Hours and Physical Exercise

Objective: To investigate how worksite health interventions involving a 2.5-hour reduction of weekly working hours with (PE) or without (RWH) mandatory physical exercise affects productivity. Methods: Six workplaces in dental health care were matched and randomized to three conditions (PE, RWH and referents). Employees' (N = 177) self-rated productivity and the workplaces' production levels (numbe

The ATP Receptors P2X7 and P2X4 Modulate High Glucose and Palmitate-Induced Inflammatory Responses in Endothelial Cells.

Endothelial cells lining the blood vessels are principal players in vascular inflammatory responses. Dysregulation of endothelial cell function caused by hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and hyperinsulinemia often result in impaired vasoregulation, oxidative stress, inflammation, and altered barrier function. Various stressors including high glucose stimulate the release of nucleotides thus initiating

Demo Hour

NordiCHI'14 conference attendees got hands-on experience with a number of great new interactive systems. Among the accepted poster, video, and demo submissions, we selected the following four prototypes to illustrate the high-quality design research displayed during the conference, which was held in Helsinki, Finland, October 26--30, 2014.

Adapt, Survive or Die - Metabolic Imbalances and the Enteric Nervous System

Är du, vad du Abstract: In this thesis the questions “do enteric neurons adapt to survive in conditions of obesity/type 2-diabetes (T2D) related metabolic imbalances? Or do they die?” are asked. Obese and T2D patients have high rates of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. The GI tract comprises the body’s largest surface to the outside environment; it performs diverse and complex roles in an ever changing external

Impact structures and events - a Nordic perspective

Abstract in UndeterminedImpact cratering is one of the fundamental processes in the formation of the Earth and our planetary system, as reflected, for example in the surfaces of Mars and the Moon. The Earth has been covered by a comparable number of impact scars, but due to active geological processes, weathering, sea floor spreading etc, the number of preserved and recognized impact craters on th

Transport through (Ga, Mn) As nanoislands: Coulomb blockade and temperature dependence of the conductance

We report on magnetotransport measurements of nanoconstricted (Ga, Mn) As devices showing very large resistance changes that can be controlled by both an electric and a magnetic field. Based on the bias voltage and temperature-dependent measurements down to the millikelvin range we compare the models currently used to describe transport through (Ga, Mn) As nanoconstrictions. We provide an explanat

Converging structures? Recent regulatory change in bus-based local public transport in Sweden and England

This paper compares the regulatory structures that have developed in local bus regulation over the past 20 years in local public transport in Sweden and England outside London, and their impacts. The paper will attempt to assess how far there are similarities in these structures and whether there is evidence of any form of convergence. It does so with a review of the relevant legislation and struc

Transforming meadows into free surface water wetlands: Impact of increased nitrate and carbon loading on greenhouse gas production

In a laboratory study we investigated 1) the potential production of nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and 2) the effect of nitrate (NO3−) and anaerobic N2O development on CH4 production in sediment from a recently recreated free surface water wetland (FSWW) and in soil from an adjacent meadow. We designed an experiment where production of greenhouse gases was registered

Cancer risk in amyloidosis patients in Sweden with novel findings on non-Hodgkin lymphoma and skin cancer

Background: Systemic amyloidosis (SSA) is a common form of amyloidosis but it remains often unnoticed because of the slow progression in old patients. The cause for SSA is the accumulation of wild-type transthyretin amyloids in critical tissues. We provide here data showing that SSA may be associated with old-age non-Hodgkin lymphoma.Systemic amyloidoses include immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amy
