Antennal transcriptome analysis of the chemosensory gene families in the tree killing bark beetles, Ips typographus and Dendroctonus ponderosae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae)
Background: The European spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus, and the North American mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), are severe pests of coniferous forests. Both bark beetle species utilize aggregation pheromones to coordinate mass-attacks on host trees, while odorants from host and non-host trees modulate the pheromone response. Thus, the bar
Production of haloduracin by Bacillus halodurans using solid-state fermentation.
Bacillus halodurans was cultivated on wheat bran as a solid-state substrate and produced haloduracin, a bacteriocin, at about 245 AU per wheat bran. Supplementation of the bran with Lauria-Bertani broth decreased haloduracin production. However, production was stimulated by addition of Mg(2)SO(4) and K(2)HPO(4). The highest production was achieved at a wheat bran/moisture ratio of 1:1.8 and in the
Genetic polymorphisms, IGF-1, and oral contraceptive use in women from high-risk breast cancer families
Eftersom inte alla kvinnorBreast cancer is the most common cancer among Swedish women, affecting more than 7000 women each year. About 5-10% of all breast cancers are hereditary, with a monogenic inheritance pattern, but only 2-4% are explained by germline mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2. BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers have a 60-80% risk of developing breast cancer. Further, a large proportion of the breast cancers that are clu
Governing climate change transnationally: assessing the evidence from a database of sixty initiatives
With this paper we present an analysis of sixty transnational governance initiatives and assess the implications for our understanding of the roles of public and private actors, the legitimacy of governance 'beyond' the state, and the North-South dimensions of governing climate change. In the first part of the paper we examine the notion of transnational governance and its applicability in the cli

Hairdressers' occupational exposure to carcinogenic aromatic amines
The hairdresser occupation is classified as probably carcinogenic to humans based on an excess risk for urinary bladder cancer, but it is unclear if current work as a hairdresser entails such a risk. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate if hairdressers have an ongoing exposure to selected carcinogenic aromatic amines. We recruited 295 hairdressers, 32 consumers of hair dyes and 60 co
Design of robust preparative chromatography
This work presents a methodology for analyzing and optimizing preparative chromatographic processes. It uses a model-based approach to find the critical process parameters, analyze the control space and suggest a design space that can be registered with the regulatory agencies. The methodology starts with a method for model calibration and validation. The model is then used to find an optimal oper
On the role of excited species in hydrogen combustion
Recently updated hydrogen combustion mechanism was combined with ozone decomposition reactions and extended by reactions of excited species: O(D-1), OH((2)Sigma(+)), and O-2(a(1)Delta g). The reliability and the accuracy of the rate constants pertinent to these excited species were evaluated. Many reactions proposed in the literature and implemented in other kinetic schemes were found irrelevant o
Constrained capacities for faster-than-Nyquist signaling
This paper deals with capacity computations of faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling. It shows that the capacity of FTN is higher than the orthogonal pulse linear modulation capacity for all pulse shapes except the sinc. FTN signals can in fact achieve the ultimate capacity for the signal power spectral density (PSD). The paper lower and upper bounds the FTN capacity under the constraint of finite
The role of genetic variation and DNA methylation in human glucose metabolism and type 2 diabetes
Typ 2 diabetes är den vanligaste formen av diabetes, ochThe incidence of diabetes is increasing worldwide, with the most prevalent form being type 2 diabetes. Two fundamental processes contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes: insulin resistance in target organs and insufficient insulin secretion from the pancreatic beta-cells. The aim of this thesis was to explore the role of DNA methylation and common genetic variation on glucose metabolism a

Lentivirus-Induced Dendritic Cells for Immunization Against High-Risk WT1(+) Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Wilms' tumor 1 antigen (WT1) is overexpressed in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a high-risk neoplasm warranting development of novel immunotherapeutic approaches. Unfortunately, clinical immunotherapeutic use of WT1 peptides against AML has been inconclusive. With the rationale of stimulating multiantigenic responses against WT1, we genetically programmed long-lasting dendritic cells capable of pro

Scattering matrix method for optical excitation of surface plasmons in metal films with periodic arrays of subwavelength holes
We present the formulation of a scattering matrix method for the study of light-scattering properties of metal films. The method is employed for the study of the optical excitation of surface plasmons in a gold film of 15-230 nm thickness, patterned periodically with subwavelength nanoholes. The gold film is placed on a thick SiO2 wafer, and the nanoholes as well as the top side of the gold film a
Modeling Symmetric Macromolecular Structures in Rosetta3
Symmetric protein assemblies play important roles in many biochemical processes. However, the large size of such systems is challenging for traditional structure modeling methods. This paper describes the implementation of a general framework for modeling arbitrary symmetric systems in Rosetta3. We describe the various types of symmetries relevant to the study of protein structure that may be mode
