Characterisation of an elastomer for noise and vibration insulation in lightweight timber buildings

Regulations regarding impact and airborne sound insulation for lightweight timber constructions have become increasingly stringent due in particular to complaints by inhabitants. Accordingly, some building techniques frequently use elastomers at junctions so as to reduce low frequency noise. Development of accurate predictive tools (involving exact material properties) by using numerical methods s

A modified Thomson parabola spectrometer for high resolution multi-MeV ion measurements-Application to laser-driven ion acceleration

A novel Thomson parabola ion spectrometer design is presented, in which a gradient electric field configuration is employed to enable a compact design capable of high resolution measurements of ion energy and charge-to-mass ratio. Practical issues relating to the use of the spectrometer for measurement of ion acceleration in high-power laser-plasma experiments are discussed. Example experimental r

The relation between the Good-Walker and triple-regge formalisms for diffractive excitation

In this Letter we analyze the relation between the triple-pomeron and Good-Walker formalism's for diffractive excitation in DIS and hadronic collisions. In both approaches gap events are interpreted as the shadow of absorption into inelastic channels. We here argue that the two formalisms are just different views of the same phenomenon. We first demonstrate how this relation works in a simple toy

Residential culturable fungi, (1-3,1-6)-beta-d-glucan, and ergosterol concentrations in dust are not associated with asthma, rhinitis, or eczema diagnoses in children

Qualitative reporting of home indoor moisture problems predicts respiratory diseases. However, causal agents underlying such qualitative markers remain unknown. In the homes of 198 multiple allergic case children and 202 controls in Sweden, we cultivated culturable fungi by directly plating dust, and quantified (1-3, 1-6)-beta-d-glucan and ergosterol in dust samples from the child's bedroom. We ex

As3d core level studies of (GaMn)As annealed under As capping

The surface of a Ga0.95Mn0.05As layer subjected to low temperature annealing under As capping has been studied by core level photoemission with focus on As3d spectrum. By detailed comparison with the surface of pure GaAs subjected to the same surface treatment, the As spectral component of the reacted surface layer has been identified. The relative intensity of this component is consistent with th

The influence of powder properties on the imbibation rate

Mixing of powders into liquids is a common unit operation. Mixing can be divided into several steps, imbibation of the powder into the liquid being the first. Under some circumstances, such as when the powder has poor wetting properties, imbibation can be the rate-determining step. The effects of different powder properties on the imbibation rate were evaluated using an experimental imbibation mod

Introduction to the special issue on biophotonics - Part 2

The 30 articles in this special section cover a broad range among the following areas: advanced bioimaging; multifunctional endoscopy; novel approaches in biophotonic diagnostics and therapeutics; advanced biophotonic sensing techniques; laser-cell interactions; photoacoustics and terahertz biophotonics; nanobiophotonics; and novel laser, fiber-optics and electrooptics biophotonic tools, and devic

Management consensus guidance for the use of rivaroxaban - an oral, direct factor Xa inhibitor

A number of novel oral anticoagulants that directly target factor Xa or thrombin have been developed in recent years. Rivaroxaban and apixaban (direct factor Xa inhibitors) and dabigatran etexilate (a direct thrombin inhibitor) have shown considerable promise in large-scale, randomised clinical studies for the management of thromboembolic disorders, and have been approved for clinical use in speci

A comparison of two micro-beam X-ray emission techniques for actinide elemental distribution in microscopic particles originating from the hydrogen bombs involved in the Palomares (Spain) and Thule (Greenland) accidents

In order to validate and to gain confidence in two micro-beam techniques: particle induced X-ray emission with nuclear microprobe technique (mu-PIXE) and synchrotron radiation induced X-ray fluorescence in a confocal alignment (confocal SR mu-XRF) for characterization of microscopic particles containing actinide elements (mixed plutonium and uranium) a comparative study has been performed. Inter-c

Correlations between polarisation states of W particles in the reaction e(-)e(+)-> W-W+ at LEP2 energies 189-209 GeV

In a study of the reaction e(-)e(+)-> W-W+ with the DELPHI detector, the probabilities of the two W particles occurring in the joint polarisation states transverse-transverse (T T), longitudinal-transverse plus transverse-longitudinal (LT) and longitudinal-longitudinal (LL) have been determined using the final states WW -> lvq (q) over bar (l = e, mu). The two-particle joint polarisation probabili

Important research questions in allergy and related diseases: 3-chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis - a GA(2)LEN study

Chronic rhinosinusitis is one of the most common health care challenges, with significant direct medical costs and severe impact on lower airway disease and general health outcomes. The diagnosis of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) currently is based on clinical signs, nasal endoscopy and CT scanning, and therapeutic recommendations are focussing on 2 classes of drugs, corticosteroids and antibiotics.

Vuxna med utvecklingsstörning en eftersatt grupp i sjukvården.

Adults with intellectual developmental disorder are at considerable risk of somatic as well as psychiatric illness, but seldom have access to services on equal conditions as adults without intellectual developmental disorder. The symptoms of illness are often difficult to interpret, due to communication difficulties, and examinations may be difficult to carry out. Patients with moderate/severe/pro

Ett stycke pompejansk receptionshistoria

The article presents the reception of Pompeian interior design in Sweden and Stockholm. It follows the settings chosen for this kind of art from the late 18th century up to the 1920s. The difference between models available (aquarelles made by Swedish architects in Pompeii in the 19th century) and models used (preferably from the house of the Vettii) is touched upon. The decorated spaces and the c

Case management for frail older people - a qualitative study of receivers' and providers' experiences of a complex intervention.

Case management interventions have been widely used in the care of frail older people. Such interventions often contain components that may act both independently of each other and interdependently, which makes them complex and challenging to evaluate. Qualitative research is needed for complex interventions to explore barriers and facilitators, and to understand the intervention's components. The

High-Fat Diet Reduces the Formation of Butyrate, but Increases Succinate, Inflammation, Liver Fat and Cholesterol in Rats, while Dietary Fibre Counteracts These Effects.

Obesity is linked to type 2 diabetes and risk factors associated to the metabolic syndrome. Consumption of dietary fibres has been shown to have positive metabolic health effects, such as by increasing satiety, lowering blood glucose and cholesterol levels. These effects may be associated with short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), particularly propionic and butyric acids, formed by microbial degradatio
