Search for technipions in exclusive production of diphotons with large invariant masses at the LHC
We focus on exclusive production of neutral technipion (pi) over tilde (0) in pp collisions at the LHC, i.e. on pp -> pp (pi) over tilde (0) reaction. The dependence of the cross section on parameters of recently proposed vector-like Technicolor model is studied. Characteristic features of the differential distributions are discussed. For not too large technipion masses the diphoton decay channel
Synthesis of amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) from MgB2 and H-2 at room temperature
Due to its high hydrogen content and its favourable overall thermodynamics magnesium tetrahydroborate has been considered interesting for hydrogen storage applications. In this work we show that unsolvated amorphous magnesium tetrahydroborate can be obtained by reactive ball milling of commercial MgB2 under 100 bar hydrogen atmosphere. The material was characterized by solid-state NMR which showed
Visual Impairment and Vision-Related Quality of Life in Glaucoma
This thesis addresses the impact of glaucoma on the patients’ vision from both a measurement based and a functionally based perspective. The risk of visual disability is probably the most important question for a newly diagnosed glaucoma patient and maintaining vision-related quality of life (VRQOL) has become the ultimate goal of glaucoma treatment. The objectives of the present thesis were to de
A novel configuration of microbial fuel cell stack bridged internally through an extra cation exchange membrane.
This paper reports a novel configuration of stacked microbial fuel cells (MFCs) bridged internally through an extra cation exchange membrane (CEM). The MFC stack (MFC(stack)), assembled from two single MFCs (MFC(single)), resulted in double voltage output and half optimal external resistance. COD removal rate was increased from 32.4% to 54.5%. The performance improvement could be attributed to the
Hierarchical Scheduling and Utility Disturbance Management in the Process Industry
This thesis deals with control of production at large-scale process industrial sites in the presence of disturbances. The main focus is on disturbances in the supply of utilities such as steam, cooling water and electricity. A general method for reducing the revenue loss due to disturbances in utilities is introduced, which may provide both proactive and reactive disturbance management strategies.
Antimicrobial resistance in urinary pathogens among Swedish nursing home residents remains low: a cross-sectional study comparing antimicrobial resistance from 2003 to 2012
Background: There are several risk factors for the colonisation, infection and spreading of antibiotic resistant bacteria among elderly residents of nursing homes. An updated estimate of the native prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in uropathogens among Swedish nursing home residents is needed. Methods: Urine specimens were collected for culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing agains
Kinship and Demographic Behavior in the Past Introduction
Energy, conflict and war: Towards a conceptual framework
It is widely recognised that the presence of some fossil fuels and their transport routes can affect the risk of conflicts. Other parts of the energy system and contextual conditions (social, economic or political factors) also matter for such conflicts, but which and how is not as well researched. This paper develops a framework that links characteristics of energy systems with contextual conditi
Coagulation factor V-A2440G causes east Texas bleeding disorder via TFPI alpha
The autosomal dominantly inherited east Texas bleeding disorder is linked to an A2440G variant in exon 13 of the F5 gene. Affected individuals have normal levels of coagulation factor V (FV) activity, but demonstrate inhibition of global coagulation tests. We demonstrated that the A2440G mutation causes upregulation of an alternatively spliced F5 transcript that results in an in-frame deletion of
Atomistic Molecular Simulations Suggest a Kinetic Model for Membrane Translocation by Arginine-Rich Peptides
Arginine-rich cell penetrating peptides (ARCPPs) are known to quickly permeate cell membranes through a non-endocytotic pathway. Potential clinical applications of this facility have prompted enormous effort, both experimental and theoretical, to better understand how ARCPPs manage to overcome the prodigious thermodynamic cost of lipid bilayer permeation by these highly charged peptides. In this w
Statistical Analysis and Forecasting of Damping in the Nordic Power System
This paper presents an application of multiple linear regression (MLR) to extract significant correlations between damping of electromechanical modes and system operating conditions and to forecast future damping values, based on existing day-ahead market forecasts for power flows and generation. The presented analysis uses measurements from the Nordic power system. First, a static MLR model is de
A Spatial Approach to Environmental Risk Assessment of PAH Contamination.
The extent of remediation of contaminated industrial sites depends on spatial heterogeneity of contaminant concentration and spatially explicit risk characterization. We used sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS) and indicator kriging (IK) to describe the spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pH, electric conductivity, particle aggregate distribution, water holding capaci
The impact of Bcl-3 expression and signaling in cancer
Popular Abstract in English Resistant to drug induced apoptosis and uncontrolled proliferation are biggest hurdles of cancer treatment. Bcl-3 is a proto-oncogene involved in both survival and proliferation in numerous cancers. In this thesis we investigated the molecular mechanisms through which Bcl-3 facilitates the survival and proliferation of cancer cells, furthermore we aimed to identify the Bcl-3 is a proto-oncogene and belongs to the inhibitor of κB (IκB) family and is known to be upregulated in numerous cancers. Bcl-3 can initiate transcription of different genes involved in cell survival and cell growth. Cell proliferation is achieved through binding of Bcl-3 to cyclin D1 promoter and facilitates the rapid transition from G1 to S phase. The aim of this thesis was to investigate th
Spinal Cord Stimulation Restores Locomotion in Animal Models of Parkinson's Disease
Dopamine replacement therapy is useful for treating motor symptoms in the early phase of Parkinson's disease, but it is less effective in the long term. Electrical deep-brain stimulation is a valuable complement to pharmacological treatment but involves a highly invasive surgical procedure. We found that epidural electrical stimulation of the dorsal columns in the spinal cord restores locomotion i
Genetic Characterization of Pediatric T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
The aim of my thesis has been to characterize genetically pediatric T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Articles I and II focus on molecular characterization of translocations involving T-cell receptor (TCR) loci. These types of aberration are characteristic for T-ALL and have previously proved pivotal in the identification of genes implicated in leukemogenesis. The translocation t(12;14
Planning for resilience to climatic extremes and variability: A review of Swedish municipalities’ adaptation responses
Climate change poses a serious challenge to sustainable urban development worldwide. In Sweden, climate change work at the city level emerged in 1996 and has long had a focus on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. City planners’ “adaptation turn” is recent and still ongoing. This paper presents a meta-evaluation of Swedish municipal adaptation approaches, and how they relate to institutional stru
Elemental composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi at high salinity.
We investigated the elemental composition of spores and hyphae of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) collected from two saline sites at the desert border in Tunisia, and of Glomus intraradices grown in vitro with or without addition of NaCl to the medium, by proton-induced X-ray emission. We compared the elemental composition of the field AMF to those of the soil and the associated plants. The spo
Topics in Trajectory Generation for Robots
A fundamental problem in robotics is generating the motion for a task. How to translate a task to motion or a series of movements is a non-trivial problem. The complexity of the task, the structure of the robot, and the desired performance determine the sequence of movements, the path, and the course of motion as a function of time, namely the trajectory. As we discuss in this thesis, a trajectory
