Crystal structure of the parasite inhibitor chagasin in complex with papain allows identification of structural requirements for broad reactivity and specificity determinants for target proteases
A complex of chagasin, a protein inhibitor from Trypanosoma cruzi, and papain, a classic family C1 cysteine protease, has been crystallized. Kinetic studies revealed that inactivation of papain by chagasin is very fast (k(on) = 1.5 x 10(6) m(-1).s(-1)), and results in the formation of a very tight, reversible complex (K-i = 36 pm), with similar or better rate and equilibrium constants than those f
Rib stress fractures in elite rowers
The aim was to investigate potential risk factors and suggested injury mechanisms involved in the development of exercise-induced rib stress fractures (RSF) in elite rowers as well as investigate biomechanical and neuromuscular differences of ergometer rowing in stationary and slide-based ergometers. BMD and muscle strength was assessed as well as EMG of thoracic muscles and rowing technique duri
Lifetime measurements and transition probability calculations in singly ionized tungsten (W II)
New measurements of radiative lifetimes for 9 levels in singly ionized tungsten (W II) have been performed with the time-resolved laser-induced-fluorescence technique. Transition probabilities have been obtained from a combination of experimental lifetimes and theoretical branching fractions. The reliability of the present results is assessed through the good agreement observed between the calcula

The ATLAS TRT end-cap detectors
The ATLAS TRT end-cap is a tracking drift chamber using 245,760 individual tubular drift tubes. It is a part of the TRT tracker which consist of the barrel and two end-caps. The TRT end-caps cover the forward and backward pseudo-rapidity region 1.0 < vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.0, while the TRT barrel central eta region vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.0. The TRT system provides a combinati

Quantifying Bulk Electrode Strain and Material Displacement within Lithium Batteries via High-Speed Operando Tomography and Digital Volume Correlation
Tracking the dynamic morphology of active materials during operation of lithium batteries is essential for identifying causes of performance loss. Digital volume correlation (DVC) is applied to high-speed operando synchrotron X-ray computed tomography of a commercial Li/MnO2 primary battery during discharge. Real-time electrode material displacement is captured in 3D allowing degradation mechanism
Single-laser shot fluorescence lifetime imaging on the nanosecond timescale using a Dual Image and Modeling Evaluation algorithm
A novel technique, designated dual imaging and modeling evaluation (DIME), for evaluating single-laser shot fluorescence lifetimes is presented. The technique is experimentally verified in a generic gas mixing experiment to provide a clear demonstration of the rapidness and sensitivity of the detector scheme. Single-laser shot fluorescence lifetimes of roughly 800 ps with a standard deviation of s

Intake of total, animal and plant proteins, and their food sources in 10 countries in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
Objective: To describe dietary protein intakes and their food sources among 27 redefined centres in 10 countries participating in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Methods: Between 1995 and 2000, 36 034 persons, aged between 35 and 74 years, were administered a standardized 24-h dietary recall (24-HDR) using a computerized interview software programme (EPIC-S
Rho-GTPases in Morphogenesis and Differentiation of the Developing Pancreas
Branched tubular networks constitute the basic structure of many organs to increase surface area and to transport fluids and gases. Glandular organs such as the pancreas arise from multilayered epithelium, which undergoes de novo lumen formation and extensive remodeling and branching. Endocrine cells originate from endocrine progenitors within the ductal epithelium. Upon differentiation into hormo
The social complexity of renewable energy production in the countryside
Based on field studies in 7 cases rural renewable energy projects in Brandenburg (federal state of Germany) were analysed during an 18 month period (early 2009 to mid 2010). The study identified relevant social dimensions of renewable energy technology and classified them according to organizational complexity, technology acceptance, participation by locals and financing models. This research show
Nematic Ordering of Polymers in Confined Geometry Applied to DNA Packaging in Viral Capsids.
A density functional theory of the spatial distribution and biaxial nematic order of polymers of arbitrary length and rigidity inside a spherical cavity is proposed. The local order of different chain segments is considered as an alignment to a spatially varying director field of cylindrical symmetry. The steric interactions are taken into account in the second virial approximation. Polymer densit
Determinant Sums for Undirected Hamiltonicity
We present a Monte Carlo algorithm for Hamiltonicity detection in an $n$-vertex undirected graph running in $O(1.657^{n})$ time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first superpolynomial improvement on the worst case runtime for the problem since the $O^*(2^n)$ bound established for the traveling salesman problem (TSP) over 50 years ago [R. Skewed Laplace distributions II: divisibility properties and extensions to stochastic processes.
This paper is a continuation of cite{KP06}, where we discussed the origins and inter-relations of major types of skew Laplace distributions. Here, we review the properties of classical and geometric infinite divisibility as well as self-decomposability, which are crucial in extending univariate Laplace models to stochastic processes. General schemes based on these properties lead to several new no
Combined membrane filtration and enzymatic treatment for recovery of high molecular mass hemicelluloses from chemithermomechanical pulp process water
Hemicelluloses with high molecular mass are needed for the manufacture of value added products such as food packaging barrier films. In this work such molecules were recovered from chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) process water using an innovative three-stage process comprising membrane separation and enzymatic treatment with laccase. Microfiltration followed by ultrafiltration was found to be a
