Chiral recognition and separation of beta(2)-amino acids using noncovalently molecularly imprinted polymers

Non-covalently molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for beta(2)-amino acids were prepared for the first time. N-(2-chlorobenzyloxycarbonyl)-(R)-beta(2)-homophenylalanine (N-2-ClZ-(R)-beta(2)-HPhe)was imprinted with methacrylic acid (MAA) and/or 4-vinylpyridine (4-VPy) as the functional monomers, with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate ( EDMA) as the cross-linker. The MIPs made with different ratios o

Results of the first World Health Organization international collaborative study of detection of Human Papillomavirus DNA.

Twenty-nine laboratories in 12 countries participated in a study to assess the performance of various human papillomavirus (HPV) detection assays through the use of a recombinant HPV DNA standard reagent panel. The panel was designed by a group of HPV experts, and samples were prepared and distributed by the World Health Organization International Laboratory for Standards and Biologicals in The Ne

CT60 genotype does not affect CTLA-4 isoform expression despite association to TID and AITD in northern Sweden

Background: Polymorphisms in and around the CTLA-4 gene have previously been associated to TiD and AITD in several populations. One such single nucleotide polymorphism ( SNP), CT60, has been reported to affect the expression level ratio of the soluble ( sCTLA- 4) to full length CTLA- 4 ( flCTLA- 4) isoforms. The aims of our study were to replicate the association previously published by Ueda et al

HCCI Closed-Loop Combustion Control Using Fast Thermal Management

This study applies Closed-Loop Combustion Control (CLCC) using Fast Thermal Management (FTM) on a multi-cylinder Variable Compression Ratio (VCR) engine together with load control, to achieve a favorable combustion phasing and load at all times. Step changes of set points for combustion phasing, Compression Ratio (CR), and load together with ramps of engine speed with either constant load, i.e., l

Time-resolved X-ray diffraction studies of phonons and phase transitions

Det har använts länge och har framgångsrikt hjälp vetenskapsmän att bestämma strukturen hos en stor mängd materiaThis thesis summarizes work in which time-resolved X-ray diffraction has been used to probe crystalline materials, thereby revealing the dynamics of phonons and phase transitions. X-ray diffraction is the standard tool in investigations of structure on the atomic scale. It has been used for a long time, and has successfully helped scientists to find the structure of a wide range of materials. The

Huntingtons sjukdom - ännu ett galet protein?

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by an expanded CAG repeat. It is characterized by motor and cognitive disturbances, as well as cellular dysfunction and loss in the basal ganglia and the cerebral cortex. The mutant protein huntingtin aggregates in cells. The toxicity of mutant huntingtin, or the loss of its normal function, causes disruption of cellul

Experimental oscillator strengths for forbidden lines in complex spectra

In dilute astrophysical plasmas, such as planetary nebulae and H II regions, strong lines appear that only have weak, if any, correspondence to the spectrum of laboratory light sources. Some of these are parity forbidden lines, i.e. emission from long-lived metastable states that cannot decay via normal electric dipole (E1) routes but only via the slower M1 and E2 transitions. The long lifetime of

A comparative study of ordinary and mineralised Portland cement clinker from two different production units Part II: Characteristics of the calcium silicates

Portland cement clinkers from two production units were investigated in order to determine the effects of mineralisation on alite and belite; Plant 1: ordinary clinker (P1) and clinker mineralised with CaF2 + CaSO4 (P1M); Plant 2: ordinary clinker (P2) and two clinkers mineralised with CaF2 + CaSO4 (P2m, P2m'). The polymorphism of alite was studied using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (XRD),

Effect of the number, thickness and washing of socks on the thermal insulation of feet

An effective way to increase the insulation on feet is to add socks. However, the effect of adding new layers on feet has not been studied enough. There is limited data on insulation of socks and their combination with footwear. In this study 4 types of socks with different fabric thickness and 3 types of footwear were tested on a thermal foot model to study the effect of the number, thickness and

Laser-Matter Interactions at Extreme Irradiance: X-ray Generation and Relativistic Channelling

This thesis summarizes experimental work in which the powerful Ti:sapphire lasers at the High Power Laser Facility at the Lund Laser Centre have been employed to investigate laser-produced X-rays and relativistic channelling. These lasers produce short pulses, of the order of 50 fs, with energies ranging from 1 mJ to 1 J. Thus, the peak powers reach several terawatts and with the most powerful las

Studies of the reactions between indole-2,3-diones (isatins) and 2-aminobenzylamine

Reflux of equimolecular amounts 2-aminobenzylamine and isatins in acetic acid produced indolo[3,2-c]quinolin-6-ones in good yields. A proposed mechanism involving initial formation of a spiro compound is given. This isolable intermediate subsequently rearranges via a sequential isocyanate ring opening and a cyclisation process to a urea derivative which finally cyclized to the indolo[3,2-c]quinoli

Modelling of Drug Release from Reservoir and Matrix Formulations - Multiple Unit Dosage Forms and Swelling and Dissolving Matrix Systems

Modellen för frisättning från filmdragerade pellets är validerad mIn this work, mathematical models have been developed describing drug release from film-coated reservoir systems as well as drug release and polymer dissolution from swelling and dissolving polymer tablets. The model derivation of both systems is based on a mechanistic approach. The model describing drug release from reservoir systems, i.e. from single, film-coated pellets, was validated against e

Tailbiting codes: Bounds and search results

Tailbiting trellis representations of linear block codes with an arbitrary sectionalization of the time axis are studied. The notations of regular and irregular tailbiting codes are introduced and their maximal state complexities are lower-bounded. The asymptotic behavior of the derived bound is investigated. Furthermore, for regular tailbiting codes the product state complexity is lower-bounded.

Patterns of polyploid evolution in Greek marsh orchids (Dactylorhiza; Orchidaceae) as revealed by allozymes, AFLPs, and plastid DNA data

Polyploidy is common in higher plants, and speciation in polyploid complexes is usually the result of reticulate evolution. We examined variation in nuclear AFLP fingerprints, nuclear isozymes, and hypervariable plastid DNA loci to describe speciation patterns and species relationships in the Dactylorhiza incarnatalmaculata polyploid complex (marsh orchids; Orchidaceae) in Greece. Several endemic

Carriage of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae by children in day-care centers during an intervention program in Malmo, Sweden

BACKGROUND: An increasing incidence of penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PRP) was detected in Malmo in 1994. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clonality and factors facilitating the spread of PRP among children in day-care centers (DCCs). METHODS: We used phenotypic and DNA-fingerprinting methods in conjunction with epidemiologic data from the South Swedish Pneumococcal Intervention Project's in

Hyperglycernia down-regulates apolipoprotein M expression in vivo and in vitro

Diabetes is associated with low concentrations of apoM in plasma. In db/db mice, ob/ob mice as well as in the alloxan-induced diabetic mouse, the low apoM levels are paralleled by decreased expression of the apoM gene. In the latter model, insulin substitution tended to reverse the low apoM expression. It is not known whether the impairment in apoM expression can be ascribed to hyperglycemia, insu
