Children's consent to treatment: using a scale to assess degree of self-determination

Discussion and debate regarding decision-making that is 'in the best interest of the child' and that also considers the child's voice in these decisions have increased in recent years. A study was undertaken to identify everyday situations in medical and nursing care in which children had been allowed to have a voice or been denied the right. Twenty-six hospitalized children, ages 6 to 17 years, a

Waiting: A Source of Hostile Interaction in an Emergency Clinic

In a study of a Swedish emergency clinic, it was found that patients' waiting produced different forms of hostile interaction between staff members and patients. A patient's hostility was interpreted as being not only a result of waiting per se but also-and predominantly-due to some features inherent in the relevant situation: the semiotics of space and the organization of waiting. Emotional and i

Carcinoma in situ of the breast: correlation of histopathology to immunohistochemical markers and DNA ploidy

In a consecutive and unselected series of 178 cases of carcinoma in situ of the breast (CIS), comprising both ductal (DCIS) and lobular type (LCIS), and a series of 48 cases of invasive carcinoma (IC) with predominance of DCIS, the association between histopathology, immunohistochemical markers (ER, PgR, MIB-1, c-erbB-2, and p53), and DNA ploidy was investigated, in order to discriminate biologica

Jitterbug - Reference Manual

The manual describes the use of Jitterbug, a Matlab toolbox for analysis of real-time control performance. The tool facilitates the computation of a quadratic performance index for a linear control system under various timing conditions.

Search for B-s(0)-(B-s(0))over-bar oscillations and a measurement of B-d(0)-(B-d(0))over-bar oscillations using events with an inclusively reconstructed vertex

Neutral B meson oscillations in the B-s(0) - , and B-d(0) - systems were studied using a sample of about 4.0 million hadronic Z decays recorded by the DELPHI detector between 1992 and 2000. Events with a high transverse momentum lepton were removed and a sample of 770 k events with an inclusively reconstructed vertex was selected. The mass difference between the two physical states in the B-d(0)

Modeling of Hindered Diffusion in Gels

It is very important to have an understanding of the influence of hindered diffusion on the mass transfer rate, especially when competing rate processes are acting simultaneously. Using mathematical modeling and simulation makes it possible to predict the effects of hindered diffusion. The systems that

An introduction to BioArray software environment

BioArray Software Environment (BASE) is a web-based software package for storing, searching, and analyzing locally generated microarray data and information surrounding microarray production. The workflow begins in sample management and, optionally, microtiter plate tracking and ends in visualization and analysis of entire experiments. The relative ease with which new analysis plug-ins can be adde

Intraplacental choriocarcinoma: a report of two cases

Two examples of intraplacental choriocarcinoma are described. Both were small and had arisen in otherwise normal third trimester placentas. The covering mantle of many of the villi adjacent to the choriocarcinomas was formed, either focally or wholly, of neoplastic trophoblastic tissue: it is only at this stage of the development of a choriocarcinoma that villous structures are present, and a stud

Visualization of ergonomic guidelines - A comparison of two computer aided systems to support vehicle design

Guidelines are used in information and quality management systems to ensure high quality by supporting design, production and communication processes. These guidelines can be presented as a conventional system on an intranet suitable for printouts, visualized as a traditional text-based report with a list of headings accompanied by tables and pictures or presented as paper documents in manuals or

Intracellular mechanisms in rd1 mouse retinal degeneration

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) är en ärftlig sjukdom där en genetisk defRetinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited disorder and the leading cause of visual impairment in the working age population. It is caused by a number of different genetic mutations, all of which cause the rod photoreceptors to degenerate. As the rods become few in numbers, the cones will also begin to die, resulting in total blindness. Since the genetic defects leading to RP are numerous, it would

Fast on-column protein digestion with subsequent peptide mapping using tandem mass spectrometry with information dependent acquisition

A platform for rapid on-line protein digestion of protein mixtures for direct infusion to a mass spectrometer is presented. A mixture of protein A, staphylococcal enterotoxin B and cytochrome c was used as a model mixture injected on a gel filtration column and a trypsin reactor which were connected in series to a micro liquid chromatography (mu LC) system. The peptides in the column eluate were a

Bose-Einstein condensation of indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells

We study the ground-state properties of a quasi-two-dimensional Bose Einstein condensate of indirect excitons, which are confined in an anisotropic harmonic potential. Incorporating the interactions, we calculate the order parameter variationally. The difficulties in the detection of a Bose-Einstein condensate are also discussed, along with possible ways which would overcome them.

Comparison of different flowability tests for powders for inhalation

A series of placebo powders for inhalation was characterized regarding bulk density and powder flowability using different techniques. The powders were of the ordered mixture type and were prepared by mixing a pharmaceutical carrier grade of lactose with different fractions of intermediate sized and fine (i.e., micronized) lactose. A modified Hausner Ratio was obtained by measurement of the poured
