Crystal structure of N-acetylmannosamine kinase from Fusobacterium nucleatum

Sialic acids comprise a varied group of nine-carbon amino sugars that are widely distributed among mammals and higher metazoans. Some human commensals and bacterial pathogens can scavenge sialic acids from their environment and degrade them for use as a carbon and nitrogen source. The enzyme N-acetylmannosamine kinase (NanK; EC 2.7.1.60) belongs to the transcriptional repressors, uncharacterized o

Time-Dependent pH Scanning of the Acid-Induced Unfolding of Human Serum Albumin Reveals Stabilization of the Native Form by Palmitic Acid Binding

The most abundant plasma protein, human serum albumin (HSA), is known to undergo several conformational transitions in an acidic environment. To avoid buffer effects and correlate global and local structural changes, we developed a continuous acidification method and simultaneously monitored the protein changes by both small-angle scattering (SAXS) and fluorescence. The progressive acidification,

Electron efficiency measurements with the ATLAS detector using 2012 LHC proton–proton collision data

This paper describes the algorithms for the reconstruction and identification of electrons in the central region of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These algorithms were used for all ATLAS results with electrons in the final state that are based on the 2012 pp collision data produced by the LHC at s = 8 TeV. The efficiency of these algorithms, together with the charge miside

Thiophene based imino-pyridyl palladium(II) complexes : Synthesis, molecular structures and Heck coupling reactions

The new compounds (5-methyl-2-thiophene-2-pyridyl(R))imine [R = methyl (L1); R = ethyl (L2)] and (5-bromo-2-thiophene-2-pyridyl(R)imine [R = methyl (L3); R = ethyl (L4)] were successfully synthesized via Schiff base condensation reaction and obtained in good yields. These potential ligands were reacted with [PdCl2(COD)] and [PdClMe(COD)] to give the corresponding complexes [PdCl2(L)] (L = L1-L4; 1

When revenues are not revenues : the influence of municipal governance on revenue recognition within Swedish municipal waste management

This paper explores the influence of municipal governance forms and structures on accounting compliance in municipal organisations. If municipal governance forms and structures influence accounting compliance, then understanding these relationships becomes important when discussing heterogeneous practice and efficient accounting regulation. The context and object of analysis is the practices of re

Comparative study of absorption efficiency of inclined and vertical InP nanowires

Geometrically designed III-V nanowire arrays are promising candidates for optoelectronics due to their possibility to excite nanophotonic resonances in absorption spectra. Strong absorption resonances can be obtained by proper tailoring of nanowire diameter, length and pitch. Such enhancement of the light absorption is, however, accompanied by undesired resonance dips at specific wavelengths. In t

Robotkalibrering

The Streptomyces O-B one connection : a force within layered repression of a key developmental decision

The study of Streptomyces development has made significant advances in the past few years and ongoing work is poised to add even more. One key to advancing the field has been the application of genome-wide approaches using Streptomyces venezuelae, which is capable of fairly synchronous sporulation in submerged growth conditions. WhiA and WhiB are well-known transcriptional regulators governing the

On Using Active Learning and Self-Training when Mining Performance Discussions on Stack Overflow

Abundant data is the key to successful machine learning. However, supervised learning requires annotated data that are often hard to obtain. In a classification task with limited resources, Active Learning (AL) promises to guide annotators to examples that bring the most value for a classifier. AL can be successfully combined with self-training, i.e., extending a training set with the unlabelled e

Near Ambient Pressure XPS Investigation of CO Oxidation Over Pd3Au(100)

The CO oxidation behavior under excess oxygen and near stoichiometric conditions over the surface of Pd3Au(100) has been studied by combining near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and quadrupole mass spectrometry and compared to Pd(100). During heating and cooling cycles, normal hysteresis in the CO2 production, i.e. with the light-off temperature being higher than the extinction

Effect of Isomerization on Excited-State Dynamics of Carotenoid Fucoxanthin

Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and single-wavelength anisotropy measurements were used to study the effect of isomerization on the excited-state properties of fucoxanthin in polar and nonpolar solvents. The excitation wavelengths were 477 nm for all-trans-fucoxanthin, and 333 and 477 nm for cis-fucoxanthin. All transient absorption spectra of the fucoxanthin isomers in polar solvents

Measurements of B →j /ψ at forward rapidity in p+p collisions at s =510 GeV

We report the first measurement of the fraction of J/ψ mesons coming from B-meson decay (FB→J/ψ) in p+p collisions at s=510 GeV. The measurement is performed using the forward silicon vertex detector and central vertex detector at PHENIX, which provide precise tracking and distance-of-closest-approach determinations, enabling the statistical separation of J/ψ due to B-meson decays from prompt J/ψ.

Multiple DNA Interactions Contribute to the Initiation of Telomerase Elongation

Telomerase maintains telomere length and chromosome integrity by adding short tandem repeats of single-stranded DNA to the 3' ends, via reverse transcription of a defined template region of its RNA subunit. To further understand the telomerase elongation mechanism, we studied the primer utilization and extension activity of the telomerase from the budding yeast Naumovozyma castellii (Saccharomyces

Income disparities in healthcare use remain after controlling for healthcare need : evidence from Swedish register data on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis

We used a southern Swedish cohort of psoriasis (PSO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients and population-based referents (N = 57,800) to investigate the influence of socioeconomic and demographic factors on the probability of healthcare use and on healthcare costs when controlling for need as measured by PSO/PsA and common additional morbidities such as diabetes, depression and myocardial infarc
