Understanding the relationship between infrastructure public-private partnerships and innovation

While the contemporary academic discourse regards innovation as an inherent feature of infrastructure public‒private partnerships (PPPs), the conceptual link between infrastructure PPPs and innovation is narrowly understood. While most existing studies conceptualize the innovation processes and effects within the context of PPP projects, we argue that the relevance of innovation in infrastructure

Setup for microwave stimulation of a turbulent low-swirl flame

An experimental setup for microwave stimulation of a turbulent flame is presented. A low-swirl flame is being exposed to continuous microwave irradiation inside an aluminum cavity. The cavity is designed with inlets for laser beams and a viewport for optical access. The aluminum cavity is operated as a resonator where the microwave mode pattern is matched to the position of the flame. Two metal me

Den eleganta cyklisten : Cykling, mode och kvinnlighet i sekelskiftets svenska och danska damtidningar

The elegant cyclist: Cycling, fashion and femininity in Swedish and Danish women’s magazines at the turn of the 20th century. At the turn of the 20th century the new sport of cycling was endowed with femininity in Scandinavian ladies’ magazines. An analysis of the magazines Idun, Svensk Damtidning, Damernes Blad and Hjemmet between 1890 and the 1910s show that both Swedish and Danish magazines appe

Facing equity in transportation Network Design Problem : A flexible constraints based model

In transportation planning, solutions designed to meet objectives of equity and social inclusion have to be achieved. From this standpoint, most of Network Design Problem (NDP) models aim at identifying the optimal layout of transportation networks by deterministic bi-level problems formulation to reflect the different goals of at least two decision makers (the network users and the planner). Cons

Magsårssjukdomens paradigmskiften – Från högspecialiserad vårdorganisation till egenvård

Knowledge development and paradigm shift for peptic ulcer disease is described over a fifty-year period using four levels of knowledge that place demands on the healthcare organization. When medical knowledge reached a healing level, continuity became subordinate. However, accessibility to treatment became more important. An important task for future healthcare will be to define and create broader

Electron Tomography Reveals the Droplet Covered Surface Structure of Nanowires Grown by Aerotaxy

For the purpose of functionalizing III-V semiconductor nanowires using n-doping, Sn-doped GaAs zincblende nanowires are produced, using the growth method of Aerotaxy. The growth conditions used are such that Ga droplets, formed on the nanowire surface, increase in number and concentrations when the Sn-precursor concentration is increased. Droplet-covered wires grown with varying Sn concentrations

Effect of diabetes mellitus on the recovery of changes in renal functions and glomerular permeability following reversible 24-hour unilateral ureteral obstruction

Background: Following reversal of short periods of ureteral obstruction (UO), glomerular and tubular renal dysfunction recovers with time. Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects glomerular function; thus, the ability of diabetic kidneys to recover from UO may be impaired. This study investigated the effects of long-term DM on the recovery of glomerular and tubular function, as well as permeability of the

Metabolic Alterations Associated to Brain Dysfunction in Diabetes

From epidemiological studies it is known that diabetes patients display increased risk of developing dementia. Moreover, cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are also accompanied by impaired glucose homeostasis and insulin signalling. Although there is plenty of evidence for a connection between insulin-resistant diabetes and AD, definitive linking mechanisms remain elusive. Cerebrova

Modification upon aging of the density of presynaptic modulation systems in the hippocampus

Different presynaptic neuromodulation systems have been explored as possible targets to manage neurodegenerative diseases. However, most studies used young adult animals whereas neurodegenerative diseases are prevalent in the elderly. Thus, we now explored by Western blot analysis how the density of different presynaptic markers and receptors changes with aging in rat hippocampal synaptosomes (pur

Increase of cannabinoid CB1 receptor density in the hippocampus of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

In the hippocampus, impaired neurophysiology, compromised neurogenesis, and eventually apoptosis accompany cognitive deficits in insulinopenic (type-1) diabetes (T1D). The underlying pathological mechanisms remain to be defined. The hippocampus has a high density of the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB(1)R), which has been shown to control several brain functions affected by diabetes, such as synap

Pridopidine Induces Functional Neurorestoration Via the Sigma-1 Receptor in a Mouse Model of Parkinson’s Disease

Pridopidine is a small molecule in clinical development for the treatment of Huntington’s disease. It was recently found to have high binding affinity to the sigma-1 receptor, a chaperone protein involved in cellular defense mechanisms and neuroplasticity. Here, we have evaluated the neuroprotective and neurorestorative effects of pridopidine in a unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesion model

Farm establishment, abandonment and agricultural practices during the last 1,300 years : a case study from southern Sweden based on pollen records and the LOVE model

The aim of the study was to identify changes in agricultural practices and periods of agricultural expansion and regression during the last 1,300 years in the South-Swedish Uplands. Sediments from the small lake of Skärpingsgölen (1.2 ha) were used to quantify land-cover at a local scale (c. 1 km radius) in 50-year intervals based on pollen analysis and the LOVE model (Local Vegetation Estimates).

Hypomotor Seizures in Infants and Children

RATIONALE:Hypomotor seizures (characterized by diminished behavioral activity with indeterminate level of consciousness) have been identified as an important seizure type in infants. Our goal was to further investigate the clinical and EEG features of hypomotor seizures.METHODS:We retrospectively reviewed 110 hypomotor seizures from 34 patients recorded with video-EEG.RESULTS:Twenty-seven patients

Measuring structural inhomogeneity of a helical conjugated polymer at high pressure and temperature

We report on X-ray scattering measurements of helical poly[9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-fluorene-2,7-diyl] by mapping the sample with 10 μm spatial resolution from 0.3 GPa to 36 GPa. We follow the strongest 00l reflection, which moves toward higher scattering angles with pressure indicating planarization of helical polyfluorene. Lateral inhomogeneity is increased for >10 GPa concomitant with the solidifi

Effect of Aerosolization and Drying on the Viability of Pseudomonas syringae Cells

Airborne dispersal of microorganisms influences their biogeography, gene flow, atmospheric processes, human health and transmission of pathogens that affect humans, plants and animals. The extent of their impact depends essentially on cell-survival rates during the process of aerosolization. A central factor for cell-survival is water availability prior to and upon aerosolization. Also, the abilit

Achieving orphan designation for placental insufficiency : annual incidence estimations in Europe

Objective: To determine whether a novel therapy for placental insufficiency could achieve orphan drug status by estimating the annual incidence of placental insufficiency, defined as an estimated fetal weight below the 10th centile in the presence of abnormal umbilical artery Doppler velocimetry, per 10 000 European Union (EU) population as part of an application for European Medicines Agency (EMA
