Improvement of NaNO2-oxidizing activity in Nitrobacter vulgaris by coentrapment in polyacrylamide containing polydimethylsiloxane copolymer and DEAE-sephadex
Removal of nitrite and nitrate from drinking water has attracted great attention in recent years because of the human health risk induced by the exposure to contaminated groundwater and surface water. We have therefore tested a model nitrite oxidation system by coentrapping the NaNO2 oxidizer Nitrobacter vulgaris with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) copolymer and DEAE-Sephadex in a polyacrylamide gel.
Identification of cytogenetic subgroups and karyotypic pathways of clonal evolution in follicular lymphomas.
Molecular identification of COL6A3-CSF1 fusion transcripts in tenosynovial giant cell tumors
Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TGCTs) are benign lesions of the tendon sheaths that primarily affect the fingers, ankles, or feet. Cytogenetic data have shown that 1p13 is most frequently involved in structural aberrations and that 2q37 is its most common translocation partner. The genes involved in the translocation t(1;2)(p13;q37) were recently identified: the colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF1
Efficient synthesis of a long carbohydrate chain alkyl glycoside catalysed by cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase).
Alkyl glycosides with long carbohydrate groups are surfactants with attractive properties but they are very difficult to synthesize. Here, a method for extension of the carbohydrate group of commercially available dodecyl-beta-D-maltoside (DDM) is presented. (DDM) was converted to dodecyl-beta-D-maltooctaoside (DDMO) in a single step by using a CGTase as catalyst and alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD)
Transplantation of lungs from non-heart-beating donors after functional assessment ex vivo.
Strong conservation of floral scent composition in two allopatric yuccas
Floral scent has been suggested to play a key role in the obligate pollination mutualism between yuccas and yucca moths. We analyzed floral fragrance compounds of Yucca elata with headspace collection followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and compared the odor blend with the recently characterized blend of the allopatric Yucca filamentosa. A principal component analysis based on 20
Sequential topotecan and oral etoposide in recurrent ovarian carcinoma pretreated with platinum-taxane - Results from a multicenter phase I/II study
BACKGROUND. The objectives of this study were to determine the maximum tolerable dose (MTD), toxicity, efficacy, and feasibility of a sequential regimen of fixed-dose topotecan (1.00 mg/m(2) on Days 1-5) and increasing doses of oral etoposide (50 mg, 75 mg, and 100 mg on Days 6-12 or Days 6-19) in patients with recurrent ovarian carcinoma. METHODS. This multicenter, open-label study was planned as
Visual summation in night-flying sweat bees: A theoretical study
Bees are predominantly diurnal; only a few groups fly at night. An evolutionary limitation that bees must overcome to inhabit dim environments is their eye type: bees possess apposition compound eyes, which are poorly suited to vision in dim light. Here, we theoretically examine how nocturnal bees Megalopta genalis fly at light levels usually reserved for insects bearing more sensitive superpositi
Photon mapping of quantum dots using a scanning tunneling microscope
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling luminescence (STL) have been used to investigate the geometric and optical properties of individual self-assembled InP quantum dots overgrown with a thin layer of GaInP. STL spectra and monochromatic photon maps were used to correlate the surface topography with the optical properties of single quantum dots. We find a spatial resolution of
Personalised virtual learning spaces to support undergraduates in producing research reports: two case studies
The purpose of this study was to create and evaluate personalised virtual learning spaces (PVLSs) in a course that was previously delivered face-to-face only. The study addressed three related questions: (1) Can a PVLS successfully be introduced into a course where IT has not previously featured? (2) Can the PVLSs be used to enhance the assessment from an extended essay to a higher-level empirical
Synovial fluid depletion: successful arthrodesis without operative cartilage removal.
Milrinone efficiently potentiates insulin secretion induced by orally but not intravenously administered glucose in C57BL6J mice.
Transient external 3D excitation of a dispersive and anisotropic slab
Propagation of a transient electromagnetic field in a stratified, dispersive and anisotropic slab, and related direct and inverse problems, are investigated. The field is generated by a transient external three-dimensional (3D) source. The analysis relies on the wave splitting concept and a two-dimensional Fourier transformation in the transverse spatial coordinates. An investigation of the physic

Dissociated incretin response to oral glucose at 1 year after restrictive vs. malabsorptive bariatric surgery
Aim Compare the response to oral glucose of the two incretin hormones, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) at 1 year after restrictive vs. malabsorptive bariatric surgery. Methods Vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG, n = 7) or jejunoileal bypass (JIB, n = 5) was performed in 12 women, aged 26-39 years, with severe obesity [body mass index (BMI) 46.6

Possible role of reactive chlorine in microbial antagonism and organic matter chlorination in terrestrial environments.
Summary Several studies have demonstrated that extensive formation of organically bound chlorine occurs both in soil and in decaying plant material. Previous studies suggest that enzymatic formation of reactive chlorine outside cells is a major source. However, the ecological role of microbial-induced extracellular chlorination processes remains unclear. In the present paper, we assess whether or
Direct molecular weight determination in the evaluation of dissolution methods for unreduced glutenin
A comparison of two dissolution methods, gentle stirring and sonication, for solubilising the ultra-large wheat protein glutenin was made based on a direct determination of the molecular weight of dissolved glutenin. The possible physical breakdown of glutenin by sonication was evaluated. Glutenin was isolated by extraction with hydrochloric acid and freeze dried. The extracted glutenin was dissol
