Lateral mobility of tethered vesicle - DNA assemblies

Supported lipid membranes are particularly attractive for use in biochemical assays because of their resistance to nonspecific adsorption and their unique ability to host transmembrane proteins. Although ideal for use in many surface-based detection techniques, supported bilayers can make the incorporation of proteins problematic due to the steric constraints of the underlying substrate. A recentl

Onset of breeding among Swedish Starlings Sturnus vulgaris in relation to spring temperature in 1981-2003

Both spring temperature and date of the first Starling Sturnus vulgaris egg were highly correlated between different study sites and weather stations in the southern half of Sweden. In southern Sweden, but not in northern Sweden, onset of breeding correlated strongly with spring temperature, particularly during the last ten days of April, the period that happens to coincide with the start of breed

Methodology for in-line rheology by ultrasound Doppler velocity profiling and pressure difference techniques

This paper describes a methodology for measuring theological flow properties in-line, in real-time, based on simultaneous measurements of velocity profiles using an ultrasound velocity profiling (UVP) technique with pressure difference (PD) technology. The methodology allows measurements that are rapid, non-destructive and non-invasive and has several advantages over methods presented previously.

Tools for non-linear time series forecasting in economics - An empirical comparison of regime switching vector autoregressive models and recurrent neural networks

The purpose of this study is to contrast the forecasting performance of two non-linear models, a regime-switching vector autoregressive model (RS-VAR) and a recurrent neural network (RNN), to that of a linear benchmark VAR model. Our specific forecasting experiment is U.K. inflation and we utilize monthly data from 1969 to 2003. The RS-VAR and the RNN perform approximately on par over both monthly

Elevated transcranial Doppler flow velocities after severe head injury: cerebral vasospasm or hyperemia?

Sixty-seven patients (45 males and 22 females) aged 2 to 70 years (mean 36 years) who had suffered closed head injury were investigated with daily transcranial Doppler (TCD) recordings. A total of 470 TCD recordings (mean 7) were made during Days 1 to 14 after admission. Blood flow velocities were determined in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and the extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA). Tw

Reservation Preservation : Powwow Dance, Radio and the Inherent Dilemma of the Preservation Process

In this dissertation, I have studied Native North American reservations and why they still exist. My research was carried out with the Ojibway, Lakota and Métis peoples in the Midwestern region of the USA and Canada. I chose three reservations with public radio facilities and one reserve community without radio in order to complete this investigation. Also, I have examined and described the Powwow

Testosterone as a predictor of pathological stage in clinically localized prostate cancer

PURPOSE: Substantial controversy exists in the literature regarding the association between pretreatment testosterone and disease outcome in patients with prostate cancer. We explored the relationship between preoperative total testosterone, and pathological stage and progression in patients with clinically localized prostate cancer treated with radical prostatectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We ret

Pathogenic paths? A time geographical approach in medical geography

Medical geography usually attempts to disentangle and explain the ecological and causal contexts of health, disease and environment by mapping spatial patterns of cases and potential pathogenic factors. However, many diseases are believed to show after long periods of latency , spanning years and even decades between initial exposure and clinical onset. In view of high spatial human mobility - in

Water Absorption in Two-Layer Masonry Systems - Properties, profiles and predictions

Popular Abstract in Swedish Många beständighetsproblem uppträder i gränsytor mellan material. Flera beständighetsproblem, t.ex. frostnedbrytning, uppstår enbart om mThe main impetus for this research was the desire to verify models for determining transient moisture profiles in the capillary range. For the evaluations, transient moisture profiles were both simulated and measured, after which the results of the two methods were compared. The study was performed for on specimens exposed to continuous water absorption, using specimens of both single and combined

Germinal center B cells constitute a predominant physiological source of IL-4: Implication for Th2 development in vivo

Protective immunity depends upon the capability of the immune system to properly adapt the response to the nature of an infectious agent. CD4+ Th cells are implicated in this orchestration by secreting a polarized pattern of cytokines. Although Th2 development in animal models and in human cells in vitro to a large extent depends on IL-4, the nature of the cells that provide the initial IL-4 in vi

IgE-reactivity to seven Malassezia species.

Background: Malassezia yeasts play a role in the pathogenesis of atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS). The revised genus Malassezia includes several species which all are natural habitants of the human skin. In this study, we evaluated the presence of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to different Malassezia spp. in AEDS patients to allow optimization of the characterization of the IgE antibod
