Shah of Iran Commemoration

On July 27, 1980, at 9:45 am in Cairo, Egypt, the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, took a long deep breath and passed away. He had lost his long battle against a blood cancer which was kept a secret from his closest confidants and even his Queen, Farah Pahlavi, for years. Today marks the 42nd commemoration of the Shah´s death and even though the majority of the Iranians were born after the Isl

The conflict between Iran and the United States has escalated, but now they are returning to status quo.

“O, Shah of Iran, Return Back to Iran”

For 39 years the Islamic Republic have been in power in Iran. Millions of books, articles, movies, series, radio programs and speeches have been produced by the regime to demolish the Shah. For 39 years have the propaganda machines of the regime been active in tyrannizing the Shah. And yet, they have failed.

Assessment of groundwater safety surrounding contaminated water storage sites using multivariate statistical analysis and Heckman selection model: a case study of Kazakhstan

Petrochemical enterprises in Kazakhstan discharge polluted wastewater into special recipients. Contaminants infiltrate through the soil into the groundwater, which potentially affects public health and environment safety. This paper presents the evaluation of a 7-year monitoring program from one of the factories and includes nineteen variables from nine wells during 2013–2019. Several multivariate

Synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers using a functionalized initiator for chiral-selective recognition of propranolol

We present a new concept of synthesis for preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers using a functionalized initiator to replace the traditional functional monomer. Using propranolol as a model template, a carboxyl‐functionalized radical initiator was demonstrated to lead to high‐selectivity polymer particles prepared in a standard precipitation polymerization system. When a single enantiomer o

Boronic Acid Modified Polymer Nanoparticles for Enhanced Bacterial Deactivation

A new method has been developed to enhance the antibacterial efficiency of traditional antibiotics. Chloramphenicol‐imprinted polymer particles were decorated with boronic acid to improve their binding to both Gram‐negative and ‐positive bacteria. The polymer particles have a high antibiotic loading and provide a slow release of the antibiotic payload to deactivate the target bacteria. The boronic

Validation of a general subjective well-being factor using Classical Test Theory

Background: Subjective Well-Being (SWB) is usually conceptualized in terms of an affective (i.e., judgements of biological emotional reactions and experiences) and a cognitive component (i.e., judgements of life satisfaction in relation to a psychological self-imposed ideal). Recently, researchers have suggested that judgements of harmony in life can replace or at least complement the cognitive co

Amino-functionalised silica-grafted molecularly imprinted polymers for chloramphenicol adsorption

This research investigated the liquid-phase removal of chloramphenicol (CAP), an emerging contaminant using molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). CAP adsorption profiles, equilibrium, and kinetics were analysed. The adsorption performance was compared between MIPs and non-imprinted polymers (NIPs), both with silica or without silica grafting. The imprinting factor (IF) values for the Si@MIPs-CAP

The role of epistemic signalling in transdisciplinary knowledge production : Examples from the field of sustainable water management

The number of arrangements where academia collaborates with governmental andnongovernmental organisations, as well as industries, have increased over the last decades. While research has focused on whether knowledge produced in such collaborations is genuinelyinfluenced by others than the ‘experts’, or those with the highest status and power, this reportexplores the influence of framings and re-fra

Predicting the fate of chlorinated aliphatics by hydrogeological modelling and DCIP data - Färgaren case study

We present a local flow model approach for the transport and the decay of a roughly 50 year old perchloroethylene contamination at a former dry cleaning facility at Kv. Färgaren in Kristianstad that sits above the largest aquifer in Sweden. The study demonstrates an efficient workflow integrating ERT for conceptualising and calibrating a three dimensional transient, multi aquifer groundwater trans

Promoting nature-based solutions for climate adaptation in cities through impact assessment

Climate change is expected to be an increasingly important source of impacts on biodiversity, both directly and in combination with other activities and phenomena, such as land use change, habitat fragmentation, and biological disruption. The complexity of Biodiversity Impact Assessment under climate change is increased by the fact that the effects are difficult to generalize, given that the timin

Lessons from the Swedish experience with negative central bank rates.

Negative interest rates were once seen as impossible outside the realm of economic theory. However, several central banks have recently adopted negative policy rates. The Federal Reserve is coming under increasing pressure to follow suit in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. This paper investigates the actual effects of negative interest rates using the Swedish experience from 2015 to 2019. The S

Complex-centric proteome profiling by SEC-SWATH-MS for the parallel detection of hundreds of protein complexes

Most catalytic, structural and regulatory functions of the cell are carried out by functional modules, typically complexes containing or consisting of proteins. The composition and abundance of these complexes and the quantitative distribution of specific proteins across different modules are therefore of major significance in basic and translational biology. However, detection and quantification

Differences in incubation behaviour and niche separation of two competing flycatcher species

Abstract: Food availability sets the stage for incubation behaviour of a female bird and thereby indirectly determines the nest temperature, which in turn affects development and metabolism of avian embryos. Changes in development and metabolism in turn are known to influence offspring’s ability to adjust to environmental changes later in life. However, few studies have investigated the role of in

Democratic Innovation in Times of Crisis: Exploring Changes in Social and Political Trust

The Estonian Citizens’ Assembly (ECA) was initiated in late 2012 as a direct consequence of a legitimacy crisis of Estonian political parties and representative institutions. The spark igniting this crisis was the unraveling of a scheme of illegal party financing. The response from governmental institutions took the form of a democratic innovation involving public crowd‐sourcing and deliberative m

Immunocyte single cell analysis of vaccine-induced narcolepsy

Increased incidence of narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) was observed following Pandemrix®‐vaccination, initiated as a preventive measure against the 2009 Influenza pandemic. Here, single cell analysis was conducted to suggest a lower number of CD8+CD27+ T cells among these patients. These findings provide understanding into the autoimmune pathogenesis of NT1.

Fetal cerebral Doppler changes and outcome in late preterm fetal growth restriction: prospective cohort study

Objectives: To explore the association between fetal umbilical and middle cerebral artery (MCA) Doppler abnormalities and outcome in late preterm pregnancies at risk of fetal growth restriction. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of singleton pregnancies at risk of fetal growth restriction at 32 + 0 to 36 + 6 weeks of gestation, enrolled in 33 European centers between 2017 and 2018, in w
