PCB in soils and estimated soil-air exchange fluxes of selected PCB congeners in the south of Sweden

PCB concentrations were studied in different soils to determine the spatial variation over a region of approximately 11000 km(2). PCB congener pattern was used to illustrate the spatial differences, as shown by principal component analysis (PCA). The relationship to different soil parameters was studied. PCB concentrations in soil showed a large variation between sampling-areas with median concent

Fluorescence blinking in MEH-PPV single molecules at low temperature

Fluorescence intensity transients of single molecules of the conjugated polymer poly[2-methoxy,5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene-vinylene] (MEH-PPV) were studied at 15 K. Fluorescence blinking behavior was observed despite the expected low-temperature suppression of energy migration in such disordered molecular systems. Presence of the fluorescence blinking effect at 15K indicates that the single mo

An optimal circular Viterbi decoder for the bounded distance criterion

We propose a Viterbi-type decoder for tailbiting trellis codes that works by traversing the tailbiting circle somewhat more than once. The traversal is the least possible for any bounded distance Viterbi decoder. Procedures are given that compute this minimum. Unlike previous decoders of the type, the new scheme does not suffer limit cycles or from pseudocodewords. The bit-error rate is compared t

Molecular mapping of the Goodpasture's epitope for glomerulonephritis

Goodpasture's syndrome is an autoimmune disease characterized by pulmonary hemorrhage, glomerulonephritis, and antiglomerular basement membrane (GBM) antibodies. We have studied a rat model with chimeric proteins (CPs) consisting of portions of the nephritogenic non-collagenous domain of alpha3 type IV collagen (alpha3(IV)NC1) and non-nephritogenic alpha1(IV)NC1. CPs with aminoterminal alpha3 that

No increase of plasma malondialdehyde after primary coronary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVE: Free radicals formed after coronary artery occlusion and reperfusion are assumed to produce myocardial stunning and possibly other forms of reperfusion injury as well. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is an end product in the lipid peroxidation chain reaction and is frequently used as a marker for free oxygen radical production. Increased levels of plasma MDA have been found following successful t

Hepatocellular carcinoma in Sweden: its association with viral hepatitis, especially with hepatitis C viral genotypes

Viral markers of chronic hepatitis were tested for in 95 frozen serum samples from 299 patients from Malmo, Sweden, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), diagnosed between 1977 and 1994. Hepatitis B analysis included anti-HBc, HBsAg and, if anti-HBc positive, HBV DNA. Hepatitis C infection analysis included anti-HCV screening, RIBA, HCV RNA and HCV genotyping. HCV genotyping was also carried out in

Bijective image registration using thin-plate splines

Image registration is the process of geometrically aligning two or more images. In this paper we describe a method for registering pairs of images based on thin-plate spline mappings. The proposed algorithm minimizes the difference in gray-level intensity over bijective deformations. By using quadratic sufficient constraints for bijectivity and a least squares formulation this optimization problem

Tlx controls proliferation and patterning of lateral telencephalic progenitor domains

We showed previously that the orphan nuclear receptor Tlx is required for the correct establishment of the pallio-subpallial boundary. Loss of Tlx results in a dorsal expansion of ventral markers (e.g., the homeodomain protein GSH2) into the ventralmost pallial region, i.e., the ventral pallium. We also observed a disproportionate reduction in the size of the Tlx mutant lateral ganglionic eminence

Effects of a second mutant allele (V199I) at the PRKAG3 (RN) locus on carcass composition in pigs

The effect of a second mutant allele (V1991, here denoted rn*) at the PRKAG3 (RN) locus on carcass composition was determined in 334 pigs, entire males and females, from crosses between Swedish Hampshire (H) and Finnish Landrace (L) (H x LH; LH x H; LH x LH). Pigs were classified according to DNA test into the following PRKAG3 genotypes: RN-IRN- (23%), RN-/rn(-) (24%), RN-/rn* (33%), rn(+)/rn(+) (

Amperometric determination of acetate with a tri-enzyme based sensor

The present work describes a flow injection analysis system incorporating amperometric biosensors for acetate monitoring. Tri-enzyme-modified electrodes were fabricated by immobilizing acetate kinase (AK), pyruvate kinase (PK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) into a poly(ethyleneglycole) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) film also containing Brilliant Cresyl Blue (BCB) as an electrochemical mediator. The c

Demographic transition of the Swedish cystic fibrosis community--results of modern care.

Assessing the results of modern cystic fibrosis (CF)-care and estimating the future population and its demography is important to evaluate the treatment regimens and to calculate the future needs of health-care resources. This paper updates previous incidence calculations. It assesses the results of modern CF-care in terms of survival and changing demography in Sweden. The incidence of CF in Sweden

Habitat-specific pigmentation in a freshwater isopod: Adaptive evolution over a small spatiotemporal scale

Pigmentation in the freshwater isopod Asellus aquaticus (Crustacea) differed between habitats in two Swedish lakes. In both lakes, isopods had lighter pigmentation in stands of submerged vegetation, consisting of stoneworts (Chara spp.), than in nearby stands of reed (Phragmites australis). Experimental crossings of light and dark isopods in a common environment showed that pigmentation had a gene

Symmetry of hole spin transport in a two-terminal quantum system

We study two-terminal hole spin transport in a p-type, light-hole-heavy-hole coupled, quantum-well system under the influence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. An expression for the spin polarization of the outgoing hole flux is derived. It is shown that the in-plane spin polarization vanishes identically whenever the outgoing lead supports only heavy-hole channels. This result is independent of t
