Course
Course 7.5 credits • SVEM37
The course is an elective component in the Master of Arts programme in Language and Linguistics. It is also offered as a free-standing course and can normally be included as part of a general first- or second-cycle degree.
Course content
The point of departure for the course is the knowledge of grammar acquired by students in first cycle courses. It presents the fundamental ideas of modern generative syntax. The students get to know the conception of language and analytical tools and methods of generative grammar. They practice analysing syntactic data from English and other languages, and a critical approach is encouraged. In addition, relevant research articles in generative grammar are subject to empirical and theoretical scrutiny.
