The course covers Runology from the oldest known inscriptions up to and including the Middle Ages. The relationship between the two Futhark alphabets and their variations are studied and problematised. The use of runes is studied from historical and sociological perspectives. The course deals with the methods of Runology, and the symbolic significance of the runes and their social aspects. A representative selection of runic inscriptions is studied.
