The course comprises theory and method within the discipline of Onomatology. Both place names and personal names are studied. Swedish place names are studied in general from an historical perspective and a number of examples of types of suffix from various eras are studied in depth. The course deals with both personal, “first” names, bynames/nicknames and family names or “surnames”. These are studied from historical, sociological and morphological perspectives. The course also discusses the current legal situation with regard to the use of names in Sweden and the other Nordic countries.

To be eligible for the course requires the completion of
courses at foundation level, which include Swedish/Norwegian
History of Language.
