The course introduces dialectology, from both a theoretical and data-oriented perspective. Emphasis is placed on the phonetic and phonological similarities and differences between various Swedish dialects. Morphological and syntactical features of dialects are discussed. Archaisms and neologisms are looked at in a general Nordic context. The sociolinguistic conditions underpinning the use of dialects are also studied. In addition, the course includes practical exercises in which the student listens to recordings of various dialects, characterises the language heard, and transcribes short sections.

För tillträde till kursen krävs genomgångna kurser på grundnivå, som innefattar svensk/nordisk språkhistoria och fonetik.

To be eligible for the course requires the completion of
courses at foundation level, which comprise
Swedish/Norwegian History of Language and Phonetics.
