Course
Course 15 credits • LIVR63
Students read a selection of American literary works from the early 19th century to 1945. Both poetry and prose are included and works are divided into two main areas. The first area includes the concepts of romanticism and modernism as they appear in American literature with their distinctive aesthetic and philosophical assumptions. The second area covers the foundations of American literature in a specific American context featuring concepts such as the relationship between individuals and society, between the optimism of the American dream and nostalgia and between nature and culture.
Parallel to the literary works studied, students read scholarly material relating to the texts read. Such material represents various perspectives, currents of ideas and eras and constitutes an analytical framework for the development of the students’ understanding of the literary works.
The course is an optional course in the Master of Arts programme in Literature – Culture – Media. It is also offered as a single course.
