Course
Course 7.5 credits • LINN19
This course looks at the way language, and language variation, are motivated by human cognition and culture, with an emphasis on cultural and linguistic difference in a context of constrained variation. We shall explore the way in which language expresses and is embedded in culture, and is part and parcel of wider cultural practices involving both language and other cultural and symbolic artefacts. The course is strongly interdisciplinary, integrating concepts and theories from anthropology, linguistics, philosophy, psychology and semiotics.
