The course ‘Communication in humans and other animals’ discusses universal and species-specific features of communication. The course gives an overview of the design of communicative systems in a range of different species, with main focus on humans, nonhuman primates, dogs and songbirds. The nonhuman primates are of interest because of our close relationship, domestic dogs because we share a long period of co-evolution, and songbirds because of analogies between acquisition of singing and acquisition of human language. Particular attention is paid to how communicative patterns develop in the young in interaction with adults. An important part of the course is to read scientific papers and critically evaluate methodology and conclusions.
