The course gives an overview over the linguistic diversity in Sweden, from the earliest written sources until today. How did this variation arise? And to what extent did the different languages interact with each other? The following languages will be dealt with: early varieties of Scandinavian languages (Primitive Norse, Old Norse); Swedish and different regional dialects (including Övdalian); the five national minority languages Romani Chib, Yiddish, Sami, Meänkieli and Finnish; Swedish sign language, and the most important immigrant languages.
