The study of modern Hebrew is based on the spoken and written language, Ivrit, which is the official language of the state of Israel. The course provides the students with an overview of the historical development of the language, and introduces the Hebrew form of writing, alef-bet. Fundamental grammatical phenomena are analysed with the help of simple texts. These are further applied in translation and conversational exercises. Exercises in written proficiency are included through the writing of simple texts. In addition to regular course literature, film and other media are included. The student practises using a Hebrew dictionary. The course consists of the following sub-courses: 1. Grammar and Reading Comprehension, 7.5 credits, 2. Oral and Written Proficiency, 7.5 credits.
